I was Djing in Berlin at a small party and played this song and it cleared the dancefloor. I asked the other guy I was DJing with what the deal was, I mean, come on, this song kicks so much ass it's ridiculous. He said that "we do no know this song in Germany; the Gap Band music did not come here". I mean, huh? I was shocked. They danced to Justin Timberlake, they danced to Le Tigre, they danced to The Ramones. But not this song . . . weird.

If they also didn't dance to "Blitzkrieg Bop" then it would make more sense.

(X-post HAHA!)

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 05:48 (twenty years ago)

I remember seeing this song on that infamous Clear Channel Songs Not To Play After 9/11 list. The idea of someone losing it due to hearing the Gap Band on the radio had me giggling for hours.

Steam, "Na Na Na Na Hey Hey"

I just had the worst montage go through my mind. Thanks Clear Channel!

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 06:18 (twenty years ago)

I was driving to work, trying to not think about that day when suddenly "Disco Inferno" came on the radio. I had to pull over and compose myself.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 06:22 (twenty years ago)

well at least with some there's a logic - no tuesdays, no death, no rescues, no bombs, no war, no peace, no planes, no new york, also apparently no 'devil' too, though this strikes me as a bit odd (if someone heard 'devil with a blue dress on' would they suddenly get images of mohammed atta as a drag queen???), i still don't get no 'mack the knife' though

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 06:29 (twenty years ago)

o no fire obv. too

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 06:30 (twenty years ago)

if someone heard 'devil with a blue dress on' would they suddenly get images of mohammed atta as a drag queen???

for the good of america, they're just not gonna take that chance

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 07:38 (twenty years ago)

but no "We Didn't Start the Fire"?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 07:48 (twenty years ago)

Startrekman, do you work for Keyboard Magazine by any chance?
Do you work for Sweetwater Sound? Future Music? Do you program softsynths or something? I really am curious. Your dogged, endless quest for how to info about tight 80s electronic pop-funk jamz has me wondering what gives.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 07:57 (twenty years ago)

I think startrekman's questions are like some of the best on ILM.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 08:05 (twenty years ago)

I agree. Collectively, they have a cumulative power and focus which is all too rare.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 09:06 (twenty years ago)

Hey, don't forget that the entire ouevre of Rage Against the Machine was on that Clear Channel list.

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

They left out Tom Petty's "Learning to Fly".

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 01:06 (twenty years ago)

Elton John, "Bennie & The Jets"

The inclusion of this on the list cracks me up for some reason.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

Ogrish used to have a video up of the WTC swandive guy with Tom Petty playing over the top of it...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 01:11 (twenty years ago)

I cannot disassociate "You Dropped a Bomb on Me"* with rollerskating at the local "Skate Center" while in 5th or 6th grade, and sadly it cuts into my enjoyment of the song more than most song associations going on in my brane.

* Please note that the title is "You Dropped a Bomb on Me" and not "You Dropped the Bomb on Me" as claimed in the title of this thread. This apparently is not an important distinction to startrekman, but I'm thinking it's pretty big, all things considered.

martin m. (mushrush), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

I once saw the Gap Band back Leon Russell, doing, among others, "Goodnight Irene." Very odd.

durante, Wednesday, 12 January 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

i really talk about songs i really don't know about when it comes to asking what kind of synths are used on that song.

startrekman, Wednesday, 12 January 2005 04:07 (twenty years ago)

They're all from Tulsa, durante. Maybe that doesn't make it less odd, though.

Magic City (ano ano), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 04:58 (twenty years ago)

I think I told this sad story before but I got dumped in high school and at the next dance I made sure she and I danced (we were still "friends" haha) and I stared SIGNIFICANTLY at her. Didn't matter. I was a tool and she was beautiful.

Haibun (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 05:04 (twenty years ago)

I'm linking to your Freelance Mentalists piece about this anecdote (and song) because it rules and it came to mind when this thread started.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 05:06 (twenty years ago)

okay that's where it went

Haibun (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 05:07 (twenty years ago)
