Bob Dylan had an album out in 2001, "Love And Theft". I got it for Christmas and it sounds wonderful. What do the rest of you think of it?

decided where yr gonna place it yet, tom?

i might snatch it today. i've been listening to dylan for the last couple of days oddly enuff.

Jess it came out in 2001 therefore you can't listen to it har har.

Keep following NYLPM's 'thrilling' navel-gazing to find out where Dylan's album will place.

Tom, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

you bastard.

hmmm...i might have to append this to overlook stealing...

(which is wrong mind you. very wrong.)

Don't sweat it Jess, with your self-imposed restriction you can still pick up Infidels, Shot of Love or Saved.

I've mostly been ignoring the hype surrounding this album (critics want Dylan to succeed so badly you can't truss 'em), but Tom's endorsement might cause me to reconsider. It's on the "buy if found used" list now, anyway.

Tom E: honestly... is this some kind of wind-up? We have already had this discussion on at least two other threads.

That said - I don't disagree with you. I think it's the second best LP of the year. I could try to say more, but have probably already said it; and I expect you to say things well in a forthcoming article anyway.

Two other threads? PF are you sure. It's been mentioned on the albums of 2001 threads I'm sure but I stopped reading those because they made my teeth hurt. This is an ideal opportunity for you to test your knowledge of the blue writing.

Tom, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Knowledge?

the pinefox, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

There was a thread re. the LP, and another one about Dylan turning 60 where I talked about it. I didn't say much of piercing insight, but I did (I think) say things you might broadly agree with (for once).

I can't remember how to do the blue writing stuff right now, but you (one!) could do a copy & paste job with this:

absolutely, because all critics are exactly the same and care only that folks love Self Portrait and Down in the Groove. thanks for clearing that up, Mark.

M. Matos, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yes, but Mark's still right. Although even disregarding Tom/PF/yourself etc. it feels like the way Bob's been written about with this album makes it seem more likely to live up to the hype - more emphasis is placed on the music and less "return to form" stuff, presumably because Time Out Of Mind *was* the Return To Form and even critics know they can't write the same review twice.

Tim, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I know the critics aren't afraid to call a crap Dylan album crap. I was thinking specifically of Oh, Mercy -- an OK album that was hailed as great because it followed so many junky releases.

"Love And Theft" - Dylan for Whit Stillman fans.

"Time Out Of Mind" - Dylan for Kevin Smith fans.
