Outstanding contribution to music: Bob Geldof

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

Shoot me now. Perhaps the most depressing bit is Bob Geldof's award. Why not invent a "You were teh face of Band Aid" award and give Outstanding Contribution to someone who deserves it?

Some unintentionally hilarious moments in the ITV2 coverage of the nominations last night, such as Harvey So Solid having exactly who Brian Wilson is explained at length by Laurne Laverne and Kate Thornton enthusing about Maroon 5 over barely supressed contempt from everyone else.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

How on earth is Joss Stone an urban act?! She's from DEVON. I can't believe MTV Base viewers voted for her.

Also all of those 'best albums' are in all seriousness the worst things to happen to music last year. Good god Muse are the best thing on it.

Bob Geldof is such a cunt.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

"Oh, Beach boys. Alright. Tom Waits?"
".................. lets move on"

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

Best Urban Act isn't based on where people actually come from...

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

British male solo artist:
Jamie Cullum, Lemar, Morrissey, The Streets, Will Young

i'm really surprised Robbie isn't in this - i guess they're adhering to the 'must have had NEW album out in the last year' thing? it's interesting because i'm not sure a clear winner is there. i guess Morrisse can be ruled out first, Will Young has won it before hasn't he? The Streets seems like it COULD happen but no, and Jamie Cullum just isn't taken seriously enough by enough people i would've thought. which just leaves Lemar...who would be the first black artist to win it since Finley Quaye in 1998. obv. i'd give it to Dizzee...

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

'99 i think Quaye won actually

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

'urban' is offensive, point-blank. i saw a section of 'urban comedy' in hmv the other day. what the fuck is up with 'urban'? joss stone isn't 'urban' by any standards but that she sings soul music, a 'black' form. there is probably a thread on this, but it is really fucked up. it makes more sense in the uk, oddly, because so much of our inherited culture is anti-urban, or anti-industrial. so the more prestigious acts, the snow patrols and franz ferdinands, ie those which appeal most to (white) middle-class mindsets, putting it bluntly, are not 'urban', because 'urban' is a term of contempt.

Miles Finch, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

OTM. "urban" is a joke. in what possible way can joss stone and dizzee rascal live in the same category? not for the first time in the past 24 hours, i despair.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

Outstanding contribution to music: Bob Geldof?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

not contempt perhaps, just lazy/frustrated but flawed attempt to collect together the square peg of fused soul/rnb/rap/garage that's so popular in the UK (if not always in the charts). Joss Stone's 'You Had Me' fits into whatever same category you'd put an Alicia Keys 'manbashing' track in in the States, and people probably think she sounds more 'soul' than Jamelia. it only goes to point out even more the absurd parameters of awards presentation and distribution in the music biz really though.

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

Would the Clash qualify as "Urban"?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

Tom waits was a total curveball

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, and his nomination was a surprise too.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

in what possible way can joss stone and dizzee rascal live in the same category?

how does The Streets? what's 'urban' about 'Dry Your Eyes' for example?

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

I meant 'urban' as traditionally contemptuous. Raymond Williams says that UK literary culture for 100 years *after* the industrial revolution remained predominantly 'rural'. And when the mass reading public started reading stuff like HG Wells and Arnold Bennett, literary culture's arbiters (like Virginia woolf) hated it, did not regard it as 'literature'.
Snow Patrol playing Kenwood House makes so much sense from this angle . It's in the middle of North London, but is designed to make you feel as if you're in the middle of the Chilterns.

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

Precedent set last year (year before?) with Dido nominated for two years on the trot for the same album. I can't remember what the excuse was that time.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

... it didn't win first time round

motherfuck predictions, this is what I WANT -

British male solo artist:
Will Young

British female solo artist:
Amy Winehouse

British album:
Muse - Absolution (oh christ)

British group:
Muse (gah!)

British single:
Jamelia - Thank You

British rock act:
Muse (I am actually reduced to supporting a Muse sweep, this is how dreadful everyone they're up against is)

British urban act:
Dizzee Rascal

British live act:
Muse

British breakthrough artist:
Natasha Bedingfield

Pop act:
Girls Aloud (all of their competitors are better than everyone in the Rock category, inc Westlife)

International male solo artist:
Kanye West

International female solo artist:
Kelis (this is ALWAYS the best category, everyone in it is quality this year, although I'm not entirely sure what Alicia Keys did in 2004)

International album:
Scissor Sisters - Scissor Sisters

International group:
Scissor Sisters

International breakthrough act:
Scissor Sisters

Brits 25 best song award:
Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights

Outstanding contribution to music: I want this to be a TRICK whereby Geldof is lured on to the stage and then DISMEMBERED by Girls Aloud, the Winehouse, Ashlee Simpson and Avril Lavigne.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

That Sparks song is 1974 or thereabouts...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

Wow PJ Harvey! I wonder if she will duet with Bjork again. So 'alternative' they damn near blew my fragile little mind last time round.

Miles Finch, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

i'd like PJ to win, i heard 'The Letter' again the other day and it's possibly the best British rock single of last year

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

that it is.

It's ironic that of all her alt-90s contemporaries (Nick Cave, Tori Amos), she's one of the few who isn't sinking into a parody of herself, who's still making exciting and relevant music, but she's the one who's dissatisfied with what she's creating.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)
