ppp, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

has it got good circulation

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

oops that was intended for the 'blood stream: c or d' thread.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

no idea. most likely, no.

ppp, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

please explain? what is it?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

they are in dire need of a fact-checker.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

or a 'fat cheque-r'

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

oh well its not perfect, but its really good. and nice and refreshing to read. ok, well i havent read much of it yet but i have looked through it and the design is fab!

xxpost, its a new music paper.

ppp, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

and where can one find it?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

i'm not trying to say that it's bad. definitely refreshing, as you say, but the number of errors surprised me. then again i used to fact-check so perhaps i'm oversensitive.

xpost - i think my flatmate picked up somewhere on upper street.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

dont know..... i borrowed a friends copy who got it sent to him.

ppp, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

What differentiates this from the NME, and what is it that makes it refreshing?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

writers actually seem excited to be writing about whatever they're covering.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

but, another criticism: suffers from the quarterly format. things quickly turn into old news.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

NME writer seem genuinely excited by what they cover too. they just cover a lot of the same old bollocks.

ppp, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

NME writers seem OVER-excited, it's just very implausible that they would be that enthsiastic about the shit they cover.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

but as far as coverage of the new, though, i don't think stool pigeon is breaking crazy ground... interpol, the duke spirit, m.i.a., the fiery furnaces, the kaiser chiefs.

argh, now it sounds like i'm a hater. i'm not, i swear! i'm just trying to give tough love.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

maybe they are intreveneously fed 'excitement' drugs.

and the editor just sits there watching all this ferver and thinks "Yes...yes, now lets make the cover PINK"

xpost

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

ok, TSP isnt covering anyone THAT different, but its the way theyre covering them.

as far as other new mags/papers, i quite liked what was in the first issue of kings magazine if anyone here saw that, but it had horrendous design. TSP on the other hand, doesnt. which makes it a winner!

ppp, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

also, nme is way more insider-ish. like, "when we were blazing rocks with dominic from the others last week, he mentioned blah blah blah...".

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

wow someone remembers that short lived MTV mag. oh wait you mean...

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm, while a welcome addition to the market (I picked it up in a Brighton clothes store), it doesn't really differentiate itself much from NME. First issue featured loads of bands the NME has alrready done in some depth. And as for the idea that the writers are better, in a few cases they're the same - Kimberely Taylor Bennet, Leonie Cooper.

laticsmon (laticsmon), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

this magazine was listed in last weekend's Rough Trade e-mail newsletter of new releases.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

There's not enough ha-cha-cha-cha!-ing on this thread.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

I was going to, thought better of it.

That Rough Trade thing, so the paper is free, yeah?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

Look. Is it better than Artrocker? If not, lock thread. I like that it has the Rogers Sisters in, that said

DJ Mencap0))), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

last week i picked up artrocker in replay - they give em away free when they are out of date .. anyone know if its selling properly at all ?
i wonder how long they will have to prove its viability - this years Bang ?

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
just found issue 2 of SP ..

it looks wonderful. jammed packed with stuff ..

no idea as to the quality .. but damn a quick flick reveals this to be damn good alternative to nme/artrocker ..

just a shame the next issue is out in July !

mark e (mark e), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

eleven months pass...
i do like this paper and love its slightly tongue in cheek, not quite serious tone, but it often makes me wonder what im getting out of reading it as nothing is serious, half the interviews ask boring questions, and the funny stuff isnt often, well, all that funny. sorry if that sounds a bit harsh, its not bad by any means, its just a bit neither here nor there really. im not sure i can ascertain what anyone writing for TSP thinks about anything, thats all.

http://www.dummymag.com/

Jockey Slutty (Jaap Schip), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

how is that a mag like Dummy can appear out of nowhere and yet I/we/ILM know nothing of it ? or is it a london only mag so far ..

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

even though at least one ilx0r writes for it!

Real Goths Don't Wear Black (Enrique), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

ILM two weeks behind the Trash msg board shock!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

i actually saw an issue of the stool pigeon a couple of weeks ago. design: brilliant! though attempts to recreate newspaper format with op-ed/sport/blah sections way too try-hard. content: crap! music covered: abysmal!

====> w/evs!

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

anything will be better than NME or Mixmag

anyone seen the new issue of Mixmag in the newsagents - those planks Hard-Fi are on the front cover!

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

surprised to see pet shop boys on the front cover of word

http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/uploads/imgs/area1/mediumCover38.jpg

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 17:04 (nineteen years ago)

The article about the PSB is somehow the worst thing in the new issue of GQ, even with other articles having been written by Giles Corren,

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

Piers Morgan, and AA "fucking" Gill.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

The Lex - agree re Stool Pigeon .. such a shame. i totally want to read it from cover to cover purely due to the design, yet, i just get bored/disinterested due to the bands.

Hard-Fi in Mixmag - laughed lots when i saw that yesterday during my lunchtime hour trawl .. unbelievable.

(must revive my trash board membership .. have forgotten password/login - grr)

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

ah ha re dummy : "Dummy is a new, groundbreaking quarterly music title from the founders of Jockey Slut magazine."

this pleases me ..

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

Mixmag Under new Mangt [Development Hell] same as Word

If they think getting a xfm/NME type generic guitar band such as Hard-Fi on the front cover, will get electronic / electro/ house/ techno fans to buy the mag they must be THICK !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

it's not just the bands in stool pigeon which are bad (though they are very very bad) - the writing is laughable, bog-standard student paper stuff which makes me have awful flashbacks to the days i had to edit the fuckers

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

and they ask the most boring questions ever!

ppp, Tuesday, 21 March 2006 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

two months pass...
arctic monkeys on the new cover - they must be doing okay.... some good pieces in the new one. i like this paper.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Thursday, 15 June 2006 23:06 (nineteen years ago)

six years pass...

sktsh, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 17:00 (twelve years ago)

shit, that's too bad. not something i read with any regularity, but every time i did, the standard of writing seemed pretty good and there were always a few interesting pieces.

Jaap and roids (NickB), Wednesday, 6 February 2013 17:41 (twelve years ago)

Oh no! I like Stool Pigeon. The fanzine style was what made it.

dog latin, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 17:51 (twelve years ago)

thats a shame.

i loved they way they made you try to read the small font text over the top of multi coloured graphics !

i'm joking.

whenever i picked up an issue i would really enjoy the mix of genres and styles.

very sorry to see it go, but at least its not due bankruptcy ..
