rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

Can't be arsed to post lots. That St.Etienne compilation is one, but the main one is this belter, which in an amazingly stupid move has been discontinued. Still, the tracks are cool

1. Classic Balearic Mastercuts

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

Just curious DR. C why "Twice as Nice" over "Cool as Ice" - as a collection of less heard material, or do you believe "Twice as Nice" has betters songs? Or a third, fourth, or fifth explanation that I can't think of?

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I had to think about this. They're both excellent of course, but I went for Twice.. as it has the stupendous Shark Vegas track, Look Into My Eyes, Low Rider as well as bonkers & less obv selections like Sakura and the RFATP track.

Then again CAI has Looking From A Hilltop megamix and Look Into My Eyes... On another day I would have gone for this instead!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

Jeff W (zebedee), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

mixed cd's count??

pedant, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

why the fuck wouldn't they?

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

if anything I am mystified by the lack of them on the thread, especially given you can bet a great deal of cash that the average rock fan wouldn't put a compilation in their top 100 cds of all time

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

I also discounted mix-CD's. Compared to non-mixed comps, they serve a very different purpose, at least for me. My combined mixed/unmixed list would be about half mixed, half not.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

chill (the fuck) out?

ditto what MindInRewind said.

It wasn't explicitly stated at the start of the thread, but I was wondering if anyone else felt the same way about the usage of the term.

I don't even have ten good ones I can think of right now.

Flux Trax

pedant, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

well it did say "various artists compilations", I am not sure how the seguing between tracks makes something not a compilation all of a sudden.

dan (dan), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

i left mixsets out because in general i think of them as less a collection of various artists and more a collection of a deejay's sound

i know that will get plenty of argument around here, but imho a good mixset is way more than the sum of its parts (it's not the same as an unmixed collection of the same tracks)

i could do a list of my ten favorite mixsets or unmixed comps, or both. but i chose to just do the unmixed comps

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

I included them because it said "compilations". *shrug*

When I said "Can You Dig It? The '70s Soul Experience" I actually meant "Beg, Scream & Shout!: The Big Ol' Box Of 60's Soul". Ooops

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

I didn't really mean box-sets to be included.

In my list I made one unforgiveable mistake ; I left out Alchemist Of Pop - Joe Meek productions. So goodbye Wanna Buy a Bridge.

Major Force
The compilation of Japanese instrumental hip hop from the eighties, originally released by Major Force, compiled by Mo Wax. A Definite classic.

Platinum Breakz vol. 1 & 3
Vol. 3 came in a cool, circle-shaped metal box, and featured (among others) one of my all-time favourite drum'n'bass tracks, Dillinja's "Warrior Jazz".

Old School Hip Hop
This German two-disc compilation cost 8 euros, it features a whole bunch of old-school classics from "Planet Rock" to "The Message" to "Break Dance - Electric Boogie" to "Boogie Down Bronx" to "I'm Your Pusher" to "King Tim III" to "Go See the Doctor" to...

Trance Europe Express 1-3, Breakbeat Era 1-2, Wasted - The Best of Volume part 1, Sally's Photographic Memory
All these came from the same company, they had lots of classic (and some exclusive) tracks (the vocal remix of Orbital's "Belfast" is pretty fab) and they came with (except for the last one) 100+ page books with interviews of all the featured artist, plus articles, jokes, etc.

Trancemaster 7-9, Trancesylvania 1-3
For nostalgia reasons if nothing else.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

Oh, Mastercuts' Classic Acid and Classic Electro are great too.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

(Even though Classic Electro lacks "Planet Rock", for license reasons apparently.)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

yeah, that Sally's Photographic Memory box is awesome.
and it was the first time I heard Kirsty's "Orange" which is one of the few songs that can actually reduce me to tears
