Opens with "Southern Hospitality" by Ludacris. "Rosa Parks" from Outkast. Something from the Amores Perros soundtrack. Back that Azz Up. Lil Wayne -- The Hot Block. Mystikal -- Family. Da Dip. Timba & Magoo -- Da Funk.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

This tape MUST INCLUDE "Whoomp! There It Is".

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

and "WhooT! there it is!" no less.

Anyone know who did that "sippin on some syrup" song? I want to find stuff like that, all slow and psychedelic.

fritz, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

i swear I closed the italics

fritz, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

why

, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

"Sippin' On Syrup" is by the Three 6 Mafia/Triple 6 Mafia/whatever. It's a good song but I enjoyed "Chickenheads" and "Tongue Ring" more, and my fave 666 song is the collaboration with Cash Money--I think "Hypnotize Cash Money" is the name of the song. I always like the bass-heavy stuttering beats and the kind of laid-back but still 3rd-generation thug-clone lyrics and attitude. Some Eightball & MJG would be good too. So you've got Memphis--for Atlanta maybe Goodie Mob's "Get Rich to This" and the aforementioned "Southern Hospitality." Representing Florida should be Trick Daddy (any of the recent singles) and maybe 2 Live Crew. Houston's got UGK. If I were making a Dirty South tape, I'd spend most of Side B on New Orleans-- Tim Smooth (pretty much anything), Pimp Daddy, UNLV, lots of Cash Money singles, Silkk the Shocker, Mystikal new and old, the first couple of TRU singles, and Bionik Brown (whose album is night- impossible to find outside of NOLA but is readily available on Audiogalaxy/etc). Sorry about the New Orleans-centricity, it's what I know best.

adam, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Good. Italics make my answer look important.

adam, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm really most interested in the NOLA stuff anyway, but curious about all of it.

fritz, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

DEATH TO ITALICS!

Don't forget to include something by TLC, like "Waterfalls".

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh yeah, I second the Mystikal suggestion.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Must have "C'mon and Ride It (The Train)" by Quad City DJs, otherwise known as West 95 or something who... wrote the original "Whoomp there It Is". That's what Andre's referencing on Stankonia when he goes "I Stink I can I Stink I can..."

"sippin syrup" was 3-6 mafia, but it's riding on the success of DJ Screw, the legendary DJ from GA who slooowed everything dooooown, at first as a result of a broken turntable or as a way to get normal tracks to mix with the ballads - take your pick - but his "screwtapes" became so popular among cough syrup addicts that real acts began asking him for remixes. screw's "forgot about dre" remix was a classic of the genre. He unfortunately died about two years ago from, yes, complications resulting from cough syrup abuse.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

How many versions of "Whoop, there it is" are there, anyway?

Mark, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Isn't Virginia south of Mason-Dixon: Timbaland/Neptunes/Missy/Aaliyah, etc. Is Memphis Bleek actually from Memphis? DJ Magic Mike and Poison Clan should be in there somewhere too. Geto Boys too, if only because they're the best southern rap group ever.

Kris, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

yeah, the geto boys' "mind playing tricks on me" would be on there no question.

DJ Screw sounds really interesting. Is there a definitive track to look for? I'm seriously going to put together a Dirty South CD-R to test out my new cd-burning capability so thanks for everybody's suggestions and keep em coming.

fritz, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The Hot Boys' "Help", Trick Daddy's "Take It 2 Da South" and "Where U From", JT Money's "Who Dat", BG's "Bling Bling", Philly's Most Wanted's "Cross The Border", Ludacris' "What's Your Fantasy?", Lil' Wayne's "High Beamin", Nelly's "E.I.", Slimm Cutta Calhoun's "It's OK", Mystikal's "Danger (Been So Long)" and Timbaland & Magoo's "Up Jump Da Boogie (Remix)".

Tim, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

big mike "playa playa". not an especially great rapper, but the song was pure pimp-y groove.

your null fame, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

surely master p deserves something? did he have a non-awful song? i guess the south-park video to "kenny's dead" was pretty amusing...

dave k, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Nelly = St. Louis = not the south.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Guh, DJ Screw is from TX, not GA.

Tim - "Take it 2 Da South" = "Take it 2 Da House" cause it's at a house tempo. You can take it from hip-hop to house with that song as the glue. It's one of my favorite songs.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

..."House" is what I meant of course. And I be luvvin it luvvin it luvvin it too.

Tim, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

i thought dj screw was actually from missouri (and therefore a yankee by sterling's definition)

fritz, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

OK, I Googled. Tracer's right, DJ Screw was from Houston.

fritz, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Don't forget the 69 Boyz' "Tootsie Roll." Southern booty-shake trash doesn't get much better than that.

lee g, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh, and you can't forget "Daisy Dukes"!

Dan Perry, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Bubba Sparxxx! Anything from his lp will do.

And if North Carolina is below the line, how about Petey Pablo - "Raise Up"?

Jeff W, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

four months pass...
What 'bout any B-more stuff, if there is any good B-more stuff, ya'll.

, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

B-more = Sisqo and Dru Hill. I guess that lets us include "The Thong Song"...

Dan Perry, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

where is the mason dixon line?

Mr Noodles, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The Mason-Dixon Line is the Pennsylvania-Maryland border. North-South.
