Joakim, Search and Destroy

kind of beginning to recognise this man's fairly wowing abilities in the last few months. I have yet to find a destroy really.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

Search: the "Are you Vegetarian", "Come Into My Kitchen" singles, and the Air remix... "minimum of life" is the best song.

Destroy: the rest of the non enthralling spooky ambience on that album, which just slapped the two singles on the album basically and padded it with said ambience.

donut christ (donut), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

Me too. His album Fantomes is really good. Totally forgot about that album and then one day while taking a bath my girlfriend put it on thinking it was a kids album (and they do love it!) and I was "what the fuck is this amazing stuff? It's all over the place!"

Anyway all his remixes/re-edits that I know rock.

Omar (Omar), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

have you heard the Max Berlin one? I can only get a one minute sample on Juno but it's killing me! amazing electro house, totally unique.

Love the Clashing Egos one too. And of course Severed Heads.

I must seek out Fantomes.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

Joakim remixed Severed Heads????

donut christ (donut), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

http://www.discogs.com/release/295578

one of the nicest records I picked up last year! nice packaging too.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

..and the Tiga one!

(going to find the MaxBerlin one, right away, sir.)

Omar (Omar), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

The Severed Heads one is more of an "edit" donut - it's the version of "Dead Eyes Opened" that you hear everywhere (at least in Melbourne), quite similar to the original - also appears on Ivan Smagghe's Suck My Deck and Tiefschwarz's Misch Masch.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

the Tiga one is great too.

I love "Are You A Vegetarian", I only heard it recently too.

Oh yeah and if the new Chateau Flight remix is the track I think it is, that's a serious search too, I think he's probably going to blow up a bit more this year, even if he is a bit leftfield.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

Well, I have Since The Accident and the original 12" on Ink, so I'm assuming the more beaty version. There's a weirder more tinny version that appeared on the Nettwerk EP Dead Eyes Opened that I like a little more just because it was weirder. But all versions of the song are great.

Ronan, someone should send you a Rough Guide to Severed Heads CD-R.

donut christ (donut), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

I know little or nothing about them, but if their stuff is like "Dead Eyes Opened" I see no reason I wouldn't like them.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

Heh, Severed Heads has more phases per ALBUM than most bands have per career. :) Since The Accident alone prototypes "IDM", melodic techno, noisy tape loop music, the Butthole Surfers (via "Houses Still Standing".. well sorta), and early industrial ("Exploring The Secrets Of Treating Deaf Mutes" sounds like it invented Babyland, who I like.)

Anyway, while I like the Clash loops in "Are You Vegetarian" and the various remixed of "Come Into My Kitchen" (esp. the lyrics), "The Minimum Of Life" is the key track, I think. I love the way it just builds while the robot just keeps repeating "'n' WORK" over and over again, things get louder, and then CRASH BOOM back to the spooky bass line and breakbeat.

i think we should talk some more about joakim. i think he's real good. the "mr. no" remix is nice too. i'd like to hear more thoughts as regards the album.

jermaine (jnoble), Sunday, 22 May 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

Search the remix of "Les Antipodes" by Chateau Flight.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 22 May 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

oh, and search "teenage kiss", of course.

jermaine (jnoble), Sunday, 22 May 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

yeah teenage kiss, i dig. i also like his air remix.

wait this is the same guy as joakim lone octet right? i think i read that somewhere. another name comes back to haunt me from a previous life! (cf chateau flight)

its the basement mix of "come into my kitchen that slays me, not the original. im also really digging this joakim remix of seelenluft "i come along", really nice glittery falling keys. can only find it on a klein mix cd tho. stop being down, discogs!!!!

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

There's a weirder more tinny version that appeared on the Nettwerk EP Dead Eyes Opened that I like a little more just because it was weirder.

I've seen these referred to as the analog version(the since the accident/Ink version) and the FM version (dead eyes opened ep attached to the Come Visit the Big Bigot CD)

I've only heard the clashing egos rmx (on sci.fi.hi.fi) and it's one of my favourite tracks I've heard this year... so considered

soul provider (Cozen), Monday, 7 November 2005 23:13 (nineteen years ago)

The Joakim remix of Clor's "Magic Touch" is amazing.

The Air remix is great too.

iDonut B4 x86 (donut), Monday, 7 November 2005 23:47 (nineteen years ago)

Seelenluft - I Come Along (Joakim Dub) is gorgeous.

blunt (blunt), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 02:26 (nineteen years ago)

ronan, do you not think there's shades of idm in joakim the same way there kinda is with justice? granted it's not as rough. seem very similar but working from different sound palettes

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 02:40 (nineteen years ago)

I think that's a pretty fair point. Joakim's first record kinda is IDM to me. I guess he still works within a fairly consistent rhythm though, and is not really crazy like Justice and co, a more serious sound alot of the time, despite stuff like "Clown Interlude".

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 23:01 (nineteen years ago)

i always associate joakim with nu-jazz !!!

on that label (future talk), was a tune that i thought was the most unbelievable thing i had ever heard!

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 10 November 2005 10:34 (nineteen years ago)

It's a Swiss record too, Discogs has it as a French release. Pah

blunt (blunt), Thursday, 10 November 2005 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

this is my favorite house song right now, joakim's remix of detroit grand pubahs.

kinda like a demented futuro-medieval green velvet.
any more he's done like this?

Does anyone know where to find a copy of Fantomes in the US? I've tried all the usual suspects (Othermusic, Forced Exposure) with no luck, and Amazon's marketplace prices are ridiculous- they start at $44.53 used.

telephone thing, Friday, 20 January 2006 04:39 (nineteen years ago)

what do people think of his new single? it's not quite grabbing me, but that remix of 'Pleasure From The Bass' still kix.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Friday, 20 January 2006 10:41 (nineteen years ago)

the new single is 'wish you were gone' right?

best thing ever. sounds utterly timeless. love the restrained use of the hook which helps the song seem sparse even when theres a million cute little things going on. theres a lovely balance to the whole thing.

the kill, Friday, 27 January 2006 00:13 (nineteen years ago)

I love it. It's also the first bit from a new album, called Monsters & Silly Songs last time I checked. Presumably released on Versatile.

telephone thing, Friday, 27 January 2006 01:28 (nineteen years ago)

I'm a big fan.

"Come into My Kitchen" and "Are You Vegetarian" have figured prominently in my crate and sets for some time. The Pubahs remix is a total panty-dropper and his Annie remix is pretty great too.

I'm still on the fence with "Wish You Were Gone" but it's growing on me.

Monsters & Silly Songs has leaked, not at my happy computer so no tracklisting. But can mention that the "something hollow tree (I think)" track is fantastic, and "Wish You Were Gone" has been edited down to just below 4 minutes in length.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
'monsters', bar two, maybe three tracks, is kinda terrible, yeah? i like 'lonely hearts', 'three legged lantern' could work in the right circumstances, haven't heard the album version of 'wish you were gone' but i doubt it's a patch on the dub version, and the rest of these sound like sketches of songs, or quasi-atmosphere noodliness

jermaine (jnoble), Friday, 17 November 2006 09:57 (eighteen years ago)

I'd say disappointing, but not terrible.

"Drum Trax", "Sleep In Hollow Tree", "Three Legged Lantern", "Lonely Hearts", and of course "I Wish You Were Gone" are all great, the rest just comes across as filler.

The album would have been much stronger if he had just included "Teenage Kiss", and the full length version of "I Wish You Were Gone" and removed two of the weaker tracks (and the monster #s for good measure). Hell, add his collaboration with DJ Morpheus as well.

I like to think that part of the sketchy nature of some of the songs is due to him apparently losing a lot of the album recordings in a hard drive failure - but then it's not as if "Fantomes" was lacking it sketchy bits either.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Friday, 17 November 2006 11:51 (eighteen years ago)

'I wish you were gone' is/was so great, I'll be really sad if the album's no good.

that antena remix is a treat though.

the realness of Colonel Sanders (H2-H4), Friday, 17 November 2006 12:14 (eighteen years ago)

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 17 November 2006 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

was the Magic Touch (clor) remix ever properly released - or just a promo thing ?
may have to post that on a blog not too far away from here, but that would make 2 joakim remixes posted, and i dont want to be branded as a fanboy now do i.
i still love that remix.
not overly impressed with Drum Trax though.

And Europeans can get Fantomes from SoulSeduction, last I checked. No idea why Versatile let possibly their best album go out of print- it can't be a rights/contract thing since Joakim's still with them, isn't he?

Telephonething (Telephonething), Saturday, 18 November 2006 02:35 (eighteen years ago)

Try and get hold of his remix of "Elle et Moi" by Max Berlin... its part of a 2 disc set, sadly never seen the first part. The origional version is very good too and has been on a few comps.

his rmx of 'camino del sol' - SO THAT'S WHAT THAT AMAZING SONG I'VE BEEN HEARING FOR THE PAST SIX MONTHS IS!

i like the album - the first half is amazing, kind of what the new lcd soundsystem should be like. then it turns into, like, a desert sessions album without warning. which is kind of ok too but not the same.

antidote against poisoning (lex pretend), Tuesday, 6 February 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

I was really underwhelmed by the Antena remix. The percussion felt incongruous against the original but it could've just been shock as I've heard it so many times (being one of my all time favorite tunes.)

how is his colette mix?

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 01:00 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah that Camino del Sol remix is gorgeous, as is his Gucci Soundsystem's "Acarpenter" remix.
Haven't heard his Colette mix but the tracklisting (or at least the tracks that I know - not that many) looks great - I love that he's put Guem's "Le Serpent" on it! A great, hypnotizing track.

willem, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 09:31 (seventeen years ago)

get physical put the max berlin mix out as the sampler for the second monza compilation. fucken ace.

haitch, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 11:04 (seventeen years ago)

Yesterday this thread spurred me to download the camino del sol mix, and I'll tell you SO THAT'S WHAT THAT AMAZING SONG I'VE BEEN HEARING FOR THE PAST SIX MONTHS IS! is right.

Obviously it's been very frequently played in the last year, but the funny thing is I thought I had this track on my computer already, and already knew what it was, finding out it was something else was kind of wierd.

mehlt, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

I love the Colette CD- a huge improvement over the previous installment's Vitalic mix. I can rip and distribute it tomorrow if anyone's interested.

fela cooties (haitch), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 02:32 (sixteen years ago)

cool! i went to see him in sydney last week but didn't stay long, the place was packed with lairy white-shirted blokes for some reason, at a night that normally struggles to sell out. had no idea he was such a big draw for that crowd.

WHALE WARS (jabba hands), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 02:36 (sixteen years ago)

how strange. i wonder if any one remix in particular put him 'over' with that lot? nothing really springs to mind.

fela cooties (haitch), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 02:47 (sixteen years ago)

can't think why either. maybe he's picked up a following from festivals or something? anyway his set was appropriately banging :-/

WHALE WARS (jabba hands), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 03:01 (sixteen years ago)

I didn't see any lairy blokes in Sydney!
You should have gone down to his set at The Tilbury on Sunday. It was great, with lots of weird and interesting music.
And the crowd was inoffensive enough for anyone's taste.

Debord, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 23:06 (sixteen years ago)

You should have gone down to his set at The Tilbury on Sunday

not being secret might have helped this!

numismatic factory (sic), Thursday, 20 November 2008 05:44 (sixteen years ago)

His new track with The Disco on the Versatile sampler is beastly (in a good way). "Love & Romance & A Special Someone"

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 20 November 2008 08:42 (sixteen years ago)

great set last night. yo-yoed between classic disco ('underwater'!) and harder electro; best reaction was for the 'camino del sol' remix, which is still amazing. also played 'pocket piano' and 'ethnic instrument' off the remix comp, both really good (the latter is pretty abrasive).

he's really tall!

Does someone want to tell me if Joakim : Nebula Laughter is at all representative of what he does?

Seems like it's the b-side of a single. I wasn't bothered about the A-side, but this track is spacerock goodness on a platter, especially the last few minutes of it.

Violent In Design (Masonic Boom), Friday, 26 June 2009 15:09 (fifteen years ago)

it is hilarious how good that remix comp was, considering it leaves off some of his best work ('budapest' dub, 'a mountain for prez', 'big onion'). doesn't it only have an edit of 'camino del sol' too??

kate it doesn't really but you should still dip a toe in, the guy is so all over the shop now style-wise that you'll find something you like. the max berlin remix would probably be a good start if you're fiending for aeroplane-type stuff.

still lolling, 'still lolling theme' (haitch), Friday, 26 June 2009 16:32 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah the Permanent Vacation mix with the Max Berlin remix on it would be a Kate favourite I think. So pretty and swirly.

Tim F, Friday, 26 June 2009 17:10 (fifteen years ago)

People probably already know this, but he's got another album due out soon, called The Milky Way or something similar (at work, can't look it up atm)

Telephone thing, Friday, 26 June 2009 18:03 (fifteen years ago)

Didn't know that, thanks for the info. I'll be looking forward to that one, even though Monsters etc. was overlong and a bit boring as a whole.
Interestingly, I noticed that the remix comp that's available on iTunes has quite a different tracklist compared to the fysical release - it has the "Budapest" and "A Mountain for President" remixes! (and also the Gucci Sound System one)

willem, Friday, 26 June 2009 19:32 (fifteen years ago)

My only problem with Nebula Laughter is that it isn't LONG enough. Like, he should have gone whole hog and done a full-on 18 minute spacerock epic re-edit of it.

Violent In Design (Masonic Boom), Monday, 6 July 2009 10:09 (fifteen years ago)

This makes me want to listen to La Dusseldorf but I've not got any at work with me. Damn.

(the remix album was pretty hit and miss, TBH.)

Violent In Design (Masonic Boom), Monday, 6 July 2009 10:11 (fifteen years ago)

The Milky Way is good, but kinda hit and miss. When he's good, he's amazing, but when he's not so good, it's a bit... erm.

NEBULA LAUGHTER, however, might just be my song of the year. I cannot stop listening to this thing. I just want an hour long version of it.

really digging a couple songs on this 'milky way' album, but it's pretty all-over-the-place. the first track is a crazy stoner/space rock jam and it's pretty amazing

psychgawsple, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 17:05 (fifteen years ago)

The album has, actually, really grown on me with repeated listens.

Your Mother Smells Of Elderflower (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 28 July 2009 17:07 (fifteen years ago)

yea i was going to recommend it to you actually! glad you're coming around

psychgawsple, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 17:13 (fifteen years ago)

At first the all-over-the-place-ness was slightly annoying - like, VLARGH! a ten minute doomspace anthem! a disco workout! computer generated PROG! some glossy shiny ELEKTRO! a lazy indie boy-girl indie anthem duet with a vocoder! - but now I'm really enjoying the ambition of its range. And it's also quite happily melodic and catchy in a way that was not immediately obvious.

(I still do wish that Nebular Laughter was on it, tho)

Your Mother Smells Of Elderflower (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 28 July 2009 17:19 (fifteen years ago)
