It seems he's never been "done" on the board, at least in his own thread. "Town Without Pity" is one of the greatest songs ever. I only know about half a dozen of his singles. What am I missing?

Well, I presume you've got the big hits like "Something's Got a Hold of My Heart" and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence" and all that. The Tomato label released a two disc comp that I have which I enjoy very much, but I don't know if that's the absolute best word or not.

My fav. Gene Pitney song was Half Heaven, Half Heartache. Have you ever heard it?

I like very much 'Gene Pitney's Big 20: All the UK Top 40 Hits 1961-1973', particularly the 1973 hit, 'Twenty Four Sycamore'.

DUD.

CLASSIC! Up there with Del Shannon and Roy Orbison as far as the early 60's melodrama Pop canon goes. "Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart" is spooky, "The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance" great silly fun, and "Every Breath I Take" (off of the Phil Spector box set) is awesome too, so totally OTT.

Upon further listening, it's not that good.

Sound is terrible, but this video is pretty wild.

nine years pass...

been listening to a lot of Gene Pitney lately for some reason - he had a lot of great tunes outside of the most famous 2 or 3 singles. many are weird and virtually all are wonderfully melodramatic.

For darn sure:

yes, this one was....definitely at the forefront of my mind when I said "weird"

Has “Fool Killer” been mentioned yet?

He's great; would easily take my five favourite Gene Pitney songs over any five by Roy Orbison. (I once had "It Hurts to Be in Love" as my #1 on a college-radio Top 100 countdown.)

I guess “Fool Killer” is mentioned on the RIP thread, along with some other good stuff:

I think I agree with this, not because GP was more talented, just more eccentric and eclectic

Anyone heard the stuff w/ George Jones? Seems like an...interesting application of his talents

Those got some good notices on the RIP thread

two years pass...

Got introduced today to his Soulboi move from '68 "She's A Heartbreaker"--he sounds like Swamp Dogg!

I adore Gene's 'psychedelic' 45 Animal Crackers. Big, bold and brassy with a lopsided rhythm and lyrics that are like The Tubes doing toytown. Far more electric than anyone would expect it to be.

Apparently a co-write for one Jerry Williams aka Swamp Dogg, so duh.

I loved the track I'm Going to Be Strong at one point. I had it on a single I think as the beside.

But yeah did some great stuff over the years.
