Busted Split! Oh No! (Or do they?)

Didn't Atomic Kitten "take a break" as well? Nobody thinks they haven't split up.

Busted were always fun, and will the exception of '3AM' released an excellent string of singles.

Presumably Fightstar will sound a bit like Aerogramme, given how much Charlie likes them?

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

with the exception

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

my fear is that Fightstar sound like an exact cross between the Fight Club soundtrack and Dogstar aka Keanu And The Woah-Betides

Stevem On X (blueski), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't Charlie do one of his solo songs at the Wembley show? At least, it was a Charlie song with no one else onstage and it sounded like shite emo. Please make it stop.

And StayPuff McFly is too busy off with McFly to sit down and cowrite the album with James. Oh no!

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Fightstar are playing Leeds Met on 1st February. Out of pure curiosity value I might see if I can get tickets off the student paper, though they'll probably want someone who thinks sounding like Biffy Clyro isn't a rubbish idea.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Ladies and gentleman, Busted!

*30,000 aborted fetuses fall from the ceiling*

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Swygart? Have you written for Leeds Student?

elwisty, Wednesday, 12 January 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The trio are seen as an alternative to more manufactured artists who are not considered credible musicians because they do not write their own songs or play their own instruments.

haha

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Looking on the bright side, at least Charlie is unlikely to become the next Robbie Williams. The next Andy Bell, maybe...

noodle vague (noodle vague), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, thanks to McFly, we've already got a spare Busted.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

elwisty - a couple of reviews, nothing too noticeable. I got to slag Chikinki though, which was good.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

leeds student. gosh. i read that in 86/87 when andrew harrison was editor...nows he's in league with Word magazine. onwards William ..

mark e (mark e), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I slagged Chikinki for the radio station. Was the gig you reviewed the thing at the met with a couple of other bands? I have been to the meeting for the paper but always left confused and empty handed. I should go more.

elwisty, Thursday, 13 January 2005 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, that was the one. I was quite kind to the support band because they were just so very hopelessly average. If you do come to the meetings again I'm the feller with the glasses and the slightly shabby brown coat who'll be sat against the wall just looking generally knackered.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 13 January 2005 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Charlie's solo song was something like "she's my psycho girlfriend" but seemed very Busted style rather than Biffy or anything "fightstar" like, although I know neither.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 13 January 2005 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

... and in any case, after a long stretch at Wembley Arena, they doubtless are having a break for a year, and will be back for more money/adulation/girls and that.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 13 January 2005 08:31 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a General Election due this year. No doubt they will be dutifully turning up at Wembley for the Tory rally alongside Tarby, Brucie, Rick Wakemany, Patti Boulayey, Ben Eltony, etcy...

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 13 January 2005 08:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Frank Bruno has ordered two tickets for himself

DJ Mencap0))), Thursday, 13 January 2005 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

'psycho girlfriend' was the James solo song; charlie's solo one was WHYYYYYYYY? and is sub-emo tripe.

Funny, but much as I love The Busted, I really don't care if they split up or not. Though I think Charlie's behaviour has been a bit... unpleasant recently, with that godawful kerrang! interview where he curried for favour with the emo kids by dissing his current bandmates. Stupid boy, get one public relations clue.

cis (cis), Thursday, 13 January 2005 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, ok. Maybe he didn't do that "Whyyyy" song. The 'matinee' Band Aid 20 performance was about 1 hour long, which was enough (in a nice way), as nearly every song ended with a big bang of fireworks which got a bit dull.

I only would recognise Matt from the others anyway, at Alice's insistance.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 13 January 2005 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

whassup with chikinki? i happen to think they're rather good. what do you not like about em?

Louie Strychnine, Thursday, 13 January 2005 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Alice is clearly a girl of taste.

cis (cis), Thursday, 13 January 2005 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

According to Catty, they didn't do the full-on Charlie solo song which we were "treated" to at the full length Wembley show last year. It was really, really rubbish. Of all the "solo" songs I have to admit that I enjoyed Matty's "Why can't I get it up?" song the best.

Though Psycho Girlfriend does have great chords. ;-)

Busted's split was announced on the Channel Five news the other night. It must be important if they interrupt CSI for it.

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 14 January 2005 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"More Than This" - that's the name of the song. I like it, it sounds a bit like Sloan. Or maybe I'm getting it mixed up with a Sloan song of the same name.

Anyway, during our marathon Busted DVD watching session the other night, I decided that Matt was the least attractive member of Busted. I mean, have you actually *seen* his skin close up? I know he's a teenage boy and hormones and all, but yeesh!

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 14 January 2005 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

You *know* we have.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 January 2005 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Heck, by the time Alice is old enough, that'll have cleared up. Hey, I'm a supportive dad, alright?

Busted Announcement

Following the departure of Charlie Simpson, Busted announced today (Friday 14th Jan 2005) that they have decided to split up.

Over the last two years James Bourne, Charlie Simpson and Matt Willis have become household names. Busted have had eight top three hits including four number ones. Both Busted albums, 2002’s Busted and 2003’s A Present For Everyone, have clocked up over 1 million sales each.

Busted won Best Pop Act and Best Breakthrough Act at the 2004 BRIT awards and they were nominated for Best British Group. Most recently they topped the charts with the theme to the Thunderbirds movie, which was voted Record Of The Year.

In the course of their career Busted have sold out 50 UK arenas including 11 Wembleys and last year they sold more Wembleys than any other artist (equaling the all time record), consolidating their position as the biggest and best pop act in the UK.

Says Matt Willis: “It’s a really sad day for all of us but we’ve always said that if one member left then we’d call it a day. The last three years have been unbelievable and I’d like to say a massive thank you to all our fans- you’ve been amazing.”

Says Charlie Simpson: “I’m incredibly proud of everything that we’ve achieved in Busted. We’ve enjoyed some of the best times in our lives together. I wouldn’t change one single bit of it. This has been a really difficult decision and I hope the fans will understand”

Says James Bourne: “I’m devastated that Charlie has chosen to quit Busted, but I have to respect his decision and I fully support him and wish him all the best for the future. I would like to say a personal thank you to all the fans who have made the last three years the best years of my life. I’ll remember these years forever.”

:(
Hurray for McFly then!

jellybean (jellybean), Friday, 14 January 2005 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

.. and Alice is going to the dentist today as well.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 January 2005 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Sigh. I suppose it's good that they chose to do this *before* they Jumped The Shark... (Though I'm starting to imagine that as a Busted tune now "I'm glad I jumped the shark, it's better as a lark..." or, erm, something.)

The Spy reckons that I should try and nab James as a songwriting partner, but he probably wouldn't say that if he had any sense. ;-)

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 14 January 2005 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I always thought "Crashed the Wedding" to be their best song. Amazed to find it was written by McFly. What made them give that away?

I have to say, at the Wembley gig, chat between the lads was non-existant (like the book signing), and only Matt actually spoke to the audience.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 January 2005 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought it was written by James *and* Staypuff McFly?

Catty reckons that in a few years, it will be James and Staypuff on stools in Vegas doing acoustic versions of the greatest hits of Busted and McFly and telling the sad stories behind the songs. Sigh.

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 14 January 2005 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd pay good money to see that.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 14 January 2005 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I would even pay badmoney to see it!

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 14 January 2005 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

which one was charlie? the green day one?

Bumfluff, Friday, 14 January 2005 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

No, the one with the Eyebrows. I always knew to distrust a man with eyebrows like that.

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 14 January 2005 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

oh. he could make it big.

Bumfluff, Friday, 14 January 2005 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

it will be James and Staypuff on stools in Vegas doing acoustic versions of the greatest hits of Busted

Y'all keep forgetting Busted's profile over here.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 January 2005 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe in Blackpool then

jellybean (jellybean), Friday, 14 January 2005 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just realised that this means I was at their Last Gig Ever.

I've never been at a band's last gig ever before! that's so cool!

cis (cis), Friday, 14 January 2005 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

If only I'd known... in fact, IF ONLY MY FRIEND WHO BOUGHT THE TICKETS HAD TOLD ME!!!!

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 14 January 2005 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Ahhh, fuckin' eyebrows, man.

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Friday, 14 January 2005 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Simpson is set to take his new band on the road this Friday (January 14). The band release their debut EP, ‘They Liked You Better When You Were Dead’, on February 28.

I think we went on their final day, but in the afternoon rather than the evening. Hang on I have the ticket stub here... Sat 18th Dec, 12:00 noon.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 January 2005 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, was the last day - I was at the evening one.

(I have renamed that shitestar ep 'they liked you better when you were busted')

cis (cis), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Cis OTFM!!!!

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's a story...
Busted Stars Quit Threat During Live Wembley Gig
December 22, 2004, 9:20:48 BUSTED STAR 'THREATENED TO QUIT DURING LIVE SHOW'

BUSTED star CHARLIE SIMPSON allegedly threatened to announce his departure from the band during a live performance at London's Wembley Arena last Saturday (18DEC04).

The THUNDERBIRDS singer wanted to quit the band live on stage at their final UK tour date, so he can devote himself to his new band FIGHTSTAR, reports British newspaper THE SUN.

But his bandmates MATT JAY and JAMES BOURNE successfully convinced him to keep quiet, moments before the gig began.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i.e.

Charlie: " ''Not only is this the last gig of our European tour, but it's the last gig we'll ever do.''"

And then they do "Rock and roll suicide".

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Sadist. He wanted to see the expression in the eyes of the little girls while their hearts broke.

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

He did, didn't he.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"The next EP's gonna be unlistenable death-metal. We're calling it 'Busted Popularity'."

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

At this point, he could name the Fighstar album "My Eyebrows Weigh A Ton" and I'd still want to eviscerate him with a baby fork.

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

.. and it'll still make top twenty anyway.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I am, for reasons far too convoluted to go into here, going to see Fightstar next month.

I may have to get "My Eyebrows Weigh A Ton" put on a t-shirt.

coco, Friday, 14 January 2005 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never been at a band's last gig ever before! that's so cool!

Hmm...I think the only one I've been at was Love and Rockets' -- announced well-beforehand, it should be said! A very enjoyable show and Stephen Perkins helped out on "Yin and Yang the Flowerpot Man."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

were the bubble men a comin?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Alas no, but that would have been a beautiful way to end things (as it was the final song was "No New Tale to Tell" -- and "So Alive" was nowhere to be seen or heard).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

not sure what everyone's so upset about, we already *know* they have to reform in order to make another five albums by the year 3000 and...

i'll get me coat

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 14 January 2005 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

aren't there about 50 Busted formula clones now anyway?

I keep seeing them on MTV & the like. Pathetic.

itchy crabs, Friday, 14 January 2005 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

seven years pass...

Ah, happy days..

Some of you may remember coverage of the School-run, where I'd play some interesting music to Amber and Alice, and often report back what happened.

That doesn't happen thesedays, but sometimes thanks to the nice TiVo box 'suggest' recording odd TOTP2 stuff, I ended up with a "School" themed show.

So, they enjoyed (or whatever) things like "School's Out" (which will always remind me of this tale: Coincidences, Whoo..... ), and some Jackson Five, Pink Floyd and so on.

We get to Busted, and "That's what I go to school for".

The happy nostalgia feelings (for them) gave way to actually taking in the lyrics about how much the kid perves over his school teacher, and the more it lasts the more the very specifics are detailed.. Amber was all "I used to think that was a nice song!"

Mark G, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 12:50 (thirteen years ago)

lol
I miss the Grout School-run coverage.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 12:53 (thirteen years ago)

I also played the "glam" compil a few days ago.

Alice compared Bryan Ferry to an extra from "Grease" (Virginia Plain) and I did see her singing along to "Looking for a Kiss" while I was out gettign the Cocopops sorted.

it's systematic...
it's hyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyydromatic

These days Ferry looks more and more like the actor who played Grouty on Porridge.
