Singer D'Angelo Arrested On Charges Of Drunk Driving, Drug Possession

R&B singer D'Angelo was arrested on charges of drunk driving and drug possession near his hometown of Richmond, Virginia, on Sunday.

D'Angelo, born Michael Eugene Archer, was stopped in a Richmond suburb for a traffic violation, but after

searching his vehicle, police found substances they believed to be cocaine and marijuana, Chesterfield police Captain Karl Leonard told The Associated Press.

Both substances were reportedly sent to laboratories to be analyzed.

D'Angelo, who won two Grammy Awards in 2000, has run into trouble on the road before. In November 2002, a woman alleged the singer cut her off in a lane leading to a shopping mall and then repeatedly and recklessly switched lanes. When police came to his home to serve him with misdemeanor charges of aggressive driving, the singer refuted the allegations and was further charged with resisting arrest (see "D'Angelo Resists Arrest On Charges Of Assault, Aggressive Driving").

D'Angelo is due in court on Tuesday to be arraigned on charges of drunken driving, marijuana possession and possession of a controlled substance.

Did anyone read that Believer interview with ?uestlove where he talked at length about D'Angelo's gradual "don't you care about anything but my abs" wear-down on tour?

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost obv.

My god, he looks terrible. I remember an interview with ?uestlove from somewhere talking about how obsessed D'Angelo was with how he looked in public, that he would do hundreds of stomach crunches every night before going on stage. He must be hurting.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess it was in The Believer.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

God, I can't shake this depressing mental movie of D'Angelo in some shitty dive bar in Richmond, trying to pick up women: "I'm D'Angelo... you've seen that video, where it keeps showing those weird side stomach muscles, and you keep thinking I'm going to flash the top of my dick-neck? That's me. No seriously. I can show you some Grammys if you come home with me. It is too me! I'm D'ANGELO!"

imo--most need a haircut.

-funkadelic
-maggot brain
-america eats its young
-cosmic slop
-standing on the verge of getting it on
-let's take it to the stage
-tales of kidd funkadelic
-there's a riot going on

You thought ODB came back from the dead to get arrested?

Now that I think about about it, have there been any conspiracy theories (such as for Tupac) alleging that ODB isn't really dead?

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 13 January 2005 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously, didn't someone around here once said D'Angelo had said he wanted to just sit around and drink beer and get fat?

Yeah, back when I used to read the Okayplayer boards ?uestlove posted something about how D just wants to get fat, grow a beard, and play g'uitar. Fine by me, let the man live. I would LOVE a new record, even if he's not working with anyone from Voodoo anymore, but I don't expected before Chinese Democracy.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 13 January 2005 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

questlove is great at hyping things up though. who knows what this thing is gonna sound like? i mean, no songs less than five minutes? it could either be mindfuckingly brilliant or completely directionless. i loved voodoo but felt some of the songwriting could have been a bit better. dangelos great though.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Thursday, 13 January 2005 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

does anyone have ?uestlove's fiona apple story saved? that was some funny s'tuff.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 13 January 2005 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that's partly why I stopped checking that site, ?uestlove's hype gets more and more hyperbolic as the records get more m'ediocre. Like Water for Chocolate and Things Fall Apart? BRILLIANT. Electric Circus and, um, the last Roots record? NOT SO MUCH.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 13 January 2005 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

like most of humankind, the roots' downfall can be conclusively traced back the moment they started dicking around on the internet.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 13 January 2005 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

ha

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 13 January 2005 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Really, I think they'd be best off as a production team/band for hire, doing tracks and live records for everyone else.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 13 January 2005 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

to be fair, electric circus was great, if you didnt listen to commons rapping on it. commons actaully gotten shitter and shitter since hooking up with the roots.

D'Angelo R&Busted for soliciting cop

He may have fallen on hard times, but this is ridiculous!

Grammy Award-winning R&B singer D'Angelo was arrested early yesterday after allegedly offering an undercover policewoman $40 for oral sex while cruising alone through the West Village -- with $12,000 stashed in his SUV.

D'Angelo, 36, whose real name is Michael Archer, was in his top-of-the-line Range Rover at Greenwich and Horatio streets at about 2:30 a.m. when he spotted a woman he took to be a prostitute, sources said.

He was arrested and charged with solicitation after asking the woman for sex, the sources said. His manager declined to comment.
