best way to fix mp3 tags?

because 'tag' and 'mp3' are both too short to search for, i couldn't find if there's already a thread about this.

i'm cleaning up music from my ipod and external hard drive before moving them from evildell to my lovely new powerbook. there's about 4,000 tracks, as far as i can tell.

tags are in varying degrees of disgrace. some are downloaded and ok, some downloaded and not. a load are ripped from my cd's, from when i didn't have internet connection at home AND no cd jackets (they're all in a big binder), so i didn't tag many of them. yes, i'm a jackass.

so, i guess i'm wondering if there's any way of fixing this problem, other than going through track by track and entering the info in itunes by hand? any help and suggestions would be most appreciated...

Dunno about macs. On pc I like ID3-TagIT.

i'm cleaning them up on my pc, actually. what does that do?

when i open them in itunes (and on podutil, which is what i'm using to get everything off my pod. which isn't the same stuff as what on my drive. it's a long story), what i get is somthing like this:

2546 ride with me nelly and sometimes an album name

so there's some basic info on it, but not song tracks, which i guess is what i need to fill in. is there some magic thing that can fill in the blanks of what i have, so i don't have to listen to the first few seconds of every track on an album to find the one i want? i doubt it, but figured that if there is, ilx/ilm would probably know about it.

I like to use the freedb plugin for foobar2000. Only works if you have the full album and a bit of info about it though.

For bulk tagging on a mac, mp3rage is good.

I'm just trying to remember if you can use the cddb auto-tagging service without the CD in the drive. Have you tried multiple-selecting all the tracks of complete albums you have imported and then going to 'get cd track names'?

i haven't tried anything with cddb, since i don't really know what it is or how it works. i've read people mention it around here, so googled it and it looked a little complicated...would i use the freecddb or whatever it's called for something like this?

thanks for all the tips. i'll probably try them all out tonight, and will report back on which one was most useful!

CDDB is integrated within iTunes (thought I don't think it calls it that on the menu). But when you go to Advanced-Get CD Track names (think that's the right menu path - don't have it in front of me) and you're online, that's what it's accessing. As I say, I'm not sure if it works without the CD or not - will check tonight.

cool, thanks for the tip! it would be so nice to actually have all my songs on my pod AND be able to tell what's what.

i'd recommend ipod users (pc) to sack off itunes for ipdod stuff and use ephpod. this way you can manage the songs on your ipod as a database.

The CDDB thing only works for files made w/ iTunes originally, so unless you st0le music frm ppl using teh iTunez then that don't work...
