The shit-hot guitarist who played on Billy Cobham's Spectrum and died young in the late 70's vs. this other guy who I'm not that familiar with but who ILM talks about a whole lot. I gather he also played the guitar and died young in the late 70's. I get their names confused a lot.

Tommy Bolin was the only artist that Geffen ever did a box set for when Geffen had anything to do with the company. I think it was some sort of hair-metal salute back to the roots by Tom Zutaut with Guns 'n' Roses money.

Yep, that's how it was peddled, sort of, pitched at guitar mags. But it's not appealing to hair metal fans. Too much soft rock Zephyr, jass fusion, stuff from Deep Purple ca. "Come Taste the Band," the mediocre James Gang albums, a cut where he's slumming in Moxy, a Canadian metal band and his average to awful two solo records.
Bolin was exceedingly marginal, someone who was the recipient of a lot of good will and best wished. But he never built up the head of steam needed to pump out even one really good record. His first solo record is OK to get. Avoid the second. "Come Taste the Band" by Deep Purple isn't bad if you like them being really funky and more lithe than standard DP.
Bolan's the select choice. Just about any T.Rex record surpasses Tommy Bolin.

Revive after five years. If Bolan ever did anything as good as the solo on Quandrant 4, I'll eat my hat. George Smith just totally wrong on this-I'm assuming this is who we now know as "Gorge". See also: the back and forth with Jan Hammer on Taurian Matador. George Smith=Totally fucked.

Yes, I'm drunk and listening to Cobham's "Spectrum". So shoot me.
wouldn't call it great but this album - tommy's second - has its uses. sorta funk/metal slowburning. (for the record I prefer marc bolan)

Something for a T-shirt. If I make one off the blog Bill, you'll be the first to get comped with one.
That's a good thing, a salute.
I know I've felt the same way after a couple sixes and reading what someone else on ILM has had to say about a fave I'm listening to -- RIGHT NOW.
I think we can agree I like a lot of the stuff you do and vice versa and I was overly cold with regards to Tommy. I'm having a Red Stripe right now, in fact.

i've been enjoying those solo albums lately. or over the last year anyway. my standards aren't very high though. i like the weird cocaine production. the sleazy easiness of it all.

^ I can agree to that. I was hammered and I listed to Spectrum on my Ipod and was liking it so much, I went on ILM to see if there were any Bolin threads. Maybe I was a bit harsh, but it's cool you took in in the spirit it was intended (which is all in good fun).
