Actually, it's more of a duuuuuuuuuwwwuuuuuun daaaaaaaaaawuuuuuuuuun.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Friday, 14 January 2005 05:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Droning freakout (as in Kyuss all over "Blues for the Red Sun")

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 14 January 2005 05:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm coming down in favour of the drone, definately. Freakouts are usually only fun for the people playing them, and if they go on for longer than like 15 seconds all sound the same. Also, the drone has evolved all the way from the original 60's psych stuff to modern times, whereas the freakout seems rather dated and would only be used today by, like, some fucking college jam band who just discovered jazz scales.

REFUTE THAT

REFUTE THAT

Freakout. For all of the same reasons you mentioned. Drone's gotten a little too respectable.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 14 January 2005 07:43 (twenty-one years ago)

always the drone.

cathy berberian (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 14 January 2005 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

freakout, but only if tastefully done.
drone, but only if jam-packed with meandering fuzz guitar.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Friday, 14 January 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

But freakouts ARE drones, man!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 14 January 2005 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

drrrrrrrrrrrrrrrooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnneeeeeeeeeeeeee

danny boy (danny boy), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

the key is variety.

Ian John50n (orion), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

True. But drones are gothier, thus.

The album which best shows that both are genius -- the Ash Ra Tempel debut. Don't question me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I like E2E4

LSD ARISTOCAT (ex machina), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The drone and the freakout go hand in hand....they need each other to survive in the wild.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

like the drone are the little crustaceon (sp?) thingys that eat bad shit off a whale's back so it won't get sick.

- "i know as little about marine biology as i do about music."

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

What, you think you're some sort of GAMER or something?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

we all have silly "Gamer" names...I'm the "Original Gamer" in deference to Ice-T.

music critics should do that....besides Xgau noone has a "handle"

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

ned "the sauce" raggett

Ian John50n (orion), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

freakout

chris besinger (chris besinger), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

ned "the sauce" raggett

Spicy, I hope.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 January 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

Freakout all the way - especially the Japanese bands (High Rise, Mainliner, Musica Transonic, Acid Mothers Temple, Fushitsusha, Kousokuya, etc.).

pdf (Phil Freeman), Saturday, 15 January 2005 01:14 (twenty years ago)

The funny thing is that I can name droney tracks by a number of those guys as well as any number of freakouts that are essentially drones. Really it's not only two sides of the same coin, it's more like a Moebius coin with one side.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 January 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

Rudolph Grey is probably the ultimate freak out drone.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 15 January 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

HENRY FLYNT

Ian John50n (orion), Saturday, 15 January 2005 02:25 (twenty years ago)

The drone should always build to the freakout which fades in to the drone and onwards.

earlnash, Saturday, 15 January 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

I will now end this debate:

High Rise >>> Pauline Oliveros

Comets on Fire >>> everything on Kranky except Charalambides

Twisted Village >>> "Selected Ambient Works"

private press LPs with hand screened jackets >>> boring academic 'box sets' released by Table of the Elements and the like

effects on guitar >>> scotch tape on synthesizer keys

Terry Brooks & Strange >>> everybody
