Go, Marcello! His '80s stuff is sooo underappreciated. 'We Want Miles' has to be among my 10 most-played by him since I bought it on 9/10/01. That "My Man's Gone Now" is outrageous.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 14 January 2005 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

mike stern gets an unfair press, i think. his guitar skronk is exactly what's needed on that album! i mean, just because he looks like meat loaf...

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 14 January 2005 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, no need to dis his diet. Your list also reminds me: Lisa Simpson to thread. The show has featured BOTC at least twice.

KOB/BB/Smiles/Cool/Filles

Where did my love for the first quintet go? It used to be my favourite Miles period, now I'd rather listen to any Miles album than the pre-KOB stuff with Coltrane.

Kind of Blue, Sketches of Spain, Get Up With It, In a Silent Way, Seven Steps to Heaven. Spot the rad noncanonical choice there

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno, I feel the same way about 'Seven Steps' as I do 'Someday My Prince Will Come' -- a couple of *grand* cuts and some OK stuff. Nobody here has mentioned a bad record. Which may be Elmo's point.

I pick individual tracks.

"Gone"
"Right Off"
"Calypso Frelimo"
"Love for Sale" ('58 version wi Evans and Adderley)
"Circle in the Round"

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Friday, 14 January 2005 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

This is really, really difficult, because I too love the 80s stuff (and mount a fervent defense of it all in my book, due out the end of this year). So even though it feels like cheating...

Oh, now that's just cheating. And Live Around the World is better than any of the 80s studio albums anyway.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 14 January 2005 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, mcd and Phil already stole my idea of sneaking the 'Plugged Nickel' thing into my album list. Ok, i'll do this:

Tracks:

"Four"
"All Blues"
"Sorcerer"
"Rated X"
"Jean-Pierre"

Albums:

Kind of Blue
Sorcerer
Sketches of Spain
In Silent Way
On the Corner

Box Sets:

The Complete Prestige Recordings
Miles Davis & Gil Evans
The Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel
Miles Davis Quintet: 1965-1968
The Complete 'Jack Johnson' Sessions

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 14 January 2005 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

so hey Phil, tell me again how to get the complete 'Pangaea'? Or was it 'Agharta'? I remember you mentioning one of these being longer on an import version. Is it just the Japanese CD editions of one or both of these that has extra material?

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 14 January 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The Japanese MasterSound editions of Agharta and Pangaea each have extra material. I think Agharta has about 10 extra minutes at the end of Disc One, and Pangaea has 3-4 extra minutes at the end of Disc Two. The extra Agharta stuff is really worth hearing - it's a slow fade-down from the fury, electronics and little percussion sounds combining and the effect is like listening to a massive engine ticking as it cools down after a thousand-mile race.
