Shanghai club scene - "Sleaze" music

I've just been told that the hottest sound in Shanghai's clubs just now is what the locals call "Sleaze". I think it has something to do with Eartha Kitt and R'nB, is quite vocal and is played by DJ Teng Boon (from Hong Kong) at club Drop. Anybody know anything about this? Sounds interesting...

Haha its seriously called "Sleaze"?! Sounds like the best thing ever is what it sounds like.

deej., Friday, 14 January 2005 09:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I imagine it to sound like early Tricky with analog synths and moaning girls

Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Friday, 14 January 2005 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to move to Shanghai.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 14 January 2005 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

me too... or at least visit. how's your shanghainese?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 14 January 2005 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, non-existent. My dad is a full on assimilator, he thought Mandarin would hurt my English. My verbal SAT was pretty high, but I'd have traded a few points...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 14 January 2005 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

here's my mandarin:
"Nee hao?"
"Xie xie"
"Xiao xiao"

:-\

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 14 January 2005 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I can count to 10, say "airplane", "car" and "thank you". The only problem with moving to Shanghai is that I'd like to actually learn some standard Mandarin.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 14 January 2005 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

wikipedia on shanghainese

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 14 January 2005 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Celebrities are put on billboards with slogans: "Be a modern Shanghainese, speak Mandarin."

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 14 January 2005 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

all i knew how to say when iw as in china was "how much is that". "too expensive". "rice". i went to a club in shanghai, but it was during sars, so it was kinda empty, and they werent playing any of this "sleaze". only chinese pop and hiphop

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 14 January 2005 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

All my shanghai club experience was rare groove

Jole, Saturday, 15 January 2005 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

If its called 'sleaze', has ANYTHING to do with Eartha Kitt AND comes from Shangai, I'm interested. Seriously. Links, names, anyone?

Soukesian, Saturday, 15 January 2005 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I looked around and Drop is in HK so there's a little confusion going on, I just emailed Teng Boon this URL so let's see what happens.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 15 January 2005 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a feeling that "Sleaze" = "70s rare groove" based on Teng Boon's DJ night descriptors.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 15 January 2005 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

when I was living in China 6 years ago, the clubs played euro pop-techno and spice girls remixes. but I'm sure things have changed since then.

I speak mandarin, but it's mighty rusty at this point,

jake b. (cerybut), Sunday, 16 January 2005 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

does "dirty south" count?

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 16 January 2005 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

not really, i guess.

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 16 January 2005 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

'Shanghai Club Scene' sounds like either a current indie pop band from Vancouver or some obscure early 80s UK new wave group.

earlnash, Sunday, 16 January 2005 04:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sleaze" is definitely a better descriptor than grime or grunge or funk.

deej., Sunday, 16 January 2005 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...

so is someone going to admit this was a justblaze/poison level joke

deej, Friday, 28 September 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

dylannn, Friday, 28 September 2007 18:40 (eighteen years ago)

Friend of mine works there. What's it like, then?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 28 September 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

crowded, lots of asians

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 28 September 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

it's not even crowded!

you have to hold a flag for one traffic light cycle if you cross a crosswalk when the no walk light is on.

the food is shit. xiao long bao are full of pork flavored mountain dew.

it's expensive and relentlessly airconditioned and a hollow shell compared to singapore, tokyo, beijing, on and on.

no one can speak mandarin.

i could make like a 100 point list.

dylannn, Friday, 28 September 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

but they have jews

s1ocki, Friday, 28 September 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

bald withered from coke israeli dudes trying out guidebook chinese on the semi-hookers of xiantiandi, biting australian english teacher girls, complaining in the lineup of the suzhou taco bell.

sleaze

brimstead, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 14:55 (seven years ago)

unhelpful post but basically, first the ten year ago trip i was having a bit of a personal crisis and that colored my impression of the city. i don't think there was ever a taco bell in suzhou. again, like i have to always say with these huge cities in china: if you haven't been there within five years, the recommendations aren't valid probably, and it's a huge sprawling city so it's hard to explain it in a few suggested spots. basically, i dunno, if you've never been there before, tourist shit like the bund and nanjing road, french concession, but go somewhere less touristy and eat random things, get some shanghainese food but know that it's probably not from a legit spot and shanghainese would tear you apart but whatever xiaolongbao is xiaolongbao and you're eating it in shanghai-- best case scenario try to make the acquaintance of someone that can take you to legit spots.
