it's my favorite album of the year so far

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Monday, 7 February 2005 06:53 (twenty years ago)

If it's half as good as Up In Flames I probably won't be disappointed.

Matt Chesnut, Monday, 7 February 2005 06:54 (twenty years ago)

Holy shite, this is GREAT! I demand that you all download it this instant (and then, of course, buy it the day it comes out, and call your radio stations and tell them to play it, and give money to the tsunami relief fund.)

poortheatre (poortheatre), Monday, 14 February 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

seconded/thirded. it's awesome. can't wait to get a proper copy.

I like it alright.

at first i thought it sounded a bit like an instrumental clinic record, but it changes as it goes on.

I've got to hand it to Caritoba here, this album really surprised me. I felt that "Up In Flames" was a great EP trapped inside of an average LP. This one manages to be experimental (lots of different styles) and concise (40 minutes long), which is a neat trick to pull off. It's not as, um, "shiny" (Byrds-y?) as the last album, but it starts like a sequel to "Up In Flames", moves through an Animal Collective weirdness phase, and finishes with with some wicked Can-esque shit that totally blew my mind.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 06:48 (twenty years ago)

Wow! Halfway through and I love it so far. Driving around on the warmest, sunniest day of the year so far and hearing this (esp. "A Final Warning") for the first time was just one of those moments.

I had no idea what he was going to do after Up in Flames, and this is about the best thing I could have hoped for. There's no way it's a fake IMO.

i didn't like up in flames nearly as much as everyone else did. maybe I'll like this one?

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

Up in Flames didn't really 'stick' but this: finishes with with some wicked Can-esque shit that totally blew my mind sounds very interesting. His Late Night Tales collection is packed with interesting drum-patterns, I guess/hope he's extended this to incorporate some of it into his own songs on this new album?

im really excited to hear this. i liked what little i heard of UIF, but just like willem, the can comparisons (and animal collective) intrigue me.

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

d/l last night, heard it this morning. after one spin, it lives up to the expectations i had after reading mindinrewind's post. the last track, "barnowl" is like an entire track made out of the relaxed part of "mother sky". great. you'll like it, pete.

(an 'erratum' on my previous post: i was referring to four tet's late night tales cd, as far as i know manitoba/caribou never made one of those. somehow i tend to confuse four tet with manitoba and vice versa. oh well)

I asked over on the gmail thread, but is there any chance someone can yousendit this? I'm really dying to hear it.

stephen morris (stephen morris), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 07:11 (twenty years ago)

yeah - this album is very good on first listen - only four tracks in, though...

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

wait, are there live drums on this? did UIF have any live drums?

Yes and yes.

I can't stop listening to this album. "A Final Warning" evokes Vision Creation Newsun -- and maybe Future Days -- for me (obviously a great thing). It's all blissed out sounds, sometimes in subtle washes and sometimes surging, set over chugging -- and sometimes intense -- drumming. "Bees" is just ridiculously groovy. I will say that the shorter tracks aren't doing much for me yet, but I'll give it time.

one month passes...
I wonder if anyone else hears similarities to the mingus album "let my children hear music." yea this album definately lives up to expectations.

two years pass...

Been hammering this lately. Really lovely.

Scik Mouthy, Friday, 18 January 2008 09:13 (eighteen years ago)

Yes. This is a most tremendous album. Sometimes I think it might be his best...

Davey D, Friday, 18 January 2008 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

Very consistently good artist.
And yes, great album here.

stephen, Friday, 18 January 2008 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

his deepest album, and has incredible replay value. The tour he did in support of this contained some of the best shows I've ever seen.

talrose, Friday, 18 January 2008 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

sixteen years pass...

something i noticed on "Subnotik" that's been driving me insane for years. it's a double sample. in the liner notes, they attribute the song to the Moments' recording of "love on a two way street" but it's also got a sample of Les McCann's "Comment" layered on there
