Just so's I can relive an argument that just occurred in my office. I now stand accused of just liking GA for 'base' lustful reasons because -- literally -- Bono is the acme of serious 'deep' lyrics. Maybe my head has confused the office with ILX and the boards will start wanking off about mail merges that need doing.

Miles Finch, Friday, 14 January 2005 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Arrrrggghhhh... my first day in this office, I learned to shut up about music because one of the women here started slagging off Busted, so I leapt to their defence and she started going on about how she far preferred proper music like Scissor Sisters.

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 14 January 2005 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I shall just say "Yes". oh and "Pink Floyd"

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 January 2005 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

who are Bono?

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 14 January 2005 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

"proper music like scissor sisters"

i knew this would happen. total critical backlash by march, at my guess.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 14 January 2005 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I was way ahead of the backlash. I never liked them. Eurovision with pretensions for office girls to dance round their handbags to. Feh. Green Day are more P!O!P!

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 14 January 2005 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i like proper pretentious eurovision. epic wrist-slashing italian torch songs, for instance ("I'd like to make my heart a PRRRR-IIIII-SSS-ON CELL for you to STAY! TO STAAAAAYYYYYYYY-AH!").

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 14 January 2005 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

"BOOM BOOM BOOMERANG HOW DO YOU DO??? KANGAROO BOOGALOO DIDGERIDOOOOO!"

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 January 2005 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

no conciser summation of the mainstream pop trends of 1969 could possibly have been given.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 14 January 2005 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

are you a fan of Zucchero?

Stevem On X (blueski), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

nope. demis roussos meets shaun ryder innit.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 14 January 2005 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

It was some 'ironic' entry back in the day. "Dirigible" or "Descartes" or something like that...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

couldn't find either in the Urban Dictionary, according to which i am a "tedious twat with 15 rooms and no friends." yes that's about right.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 14 January 2005 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Schmetterlinge! there we go. Worth looking at you guys.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

it was a low blow. now it's all 'miles fancies nicola'. and, you know what: Yeah? And? What if i do? is their love for bono more pure because he's repulsive and has silly hair?

Miles Finch, Friday, 14 January 2005 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

It's because Bono plays his own instruments - oh, hang on...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

girls aloud > sugarbabes >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> bono >>>>>>> (x 1,000,000,000) >>>>>>> green day/busted.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

no.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

YES. OBEY.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

girls aloud > busted >sugababes > > > > green day >>>>>>>>> The Bono

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

what was remarkable is that the argument, so bog-standard on these boards that this thread is almost parodic, was like BLOWING PEOPLE'S MINDS. the idea that Ver Aloud >>>>>>> Teh Bono was like WHAAAAAAT?????? they are MANUFACTURED!!! someone just dropped the word 'teenybopper'. it's like we never left 1996. so in other words: LUTTE CONTINUUM!!!!!!!!!

Miles Finch, Friday, 14 January 2005 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait till ironic backlash rockism hits your office.

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 14 January 2005 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

girls aloud > sugababes >> busted >>>>>>>>>>>>>> green day >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>(&c to infinity) >>>> bono

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 14 January 2005 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

REading festival on TV...

"BUSTED! oh no it's not. Is it their dads?" (Alice)

OK, here you are...

Green Day > Busted > Girlsalad > Sugarsmacks > bonobo

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 January 2005 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Girls Aloud > Sugababes > Green Day > Busted.

The last, not even worth dignifying by placing on a continuum.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 14 January 2005 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

everyone slagging Bono can bloody stop professing love for 'Clocks' if they are/do. while you chat away i'll just list songs by the artists mentioned only ALL NAUGHTILY JUMBLED UP, because i love the idea of them covering them:

Girls Aloud 'Daddy's Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car'
Sugababes 'Year 3000'
Bono 'No Good Advice'
Busted 'Freak Like Me'

Green Day - sorry lads, you're out

Stevem On X (blueski), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I can slag Bono all I like, because "Clocks" is shit.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

okey dokey

Stevem On X (blueski), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Sugababes>Busted>Girls Alou - *goes home*

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

office consensus had:

sugababes>green day>busted>the aloud, with bono a sort of hovering presence, no-one actually owning to liking him, but implying that his lyrics were a benchmark of seriousness which GA had not met.

Miles Finch, Friday, 14 January 2005 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Being kidnapped and pelted with fish bones and showered in lemon juice every day for 14 years>Busted

Arrrrggghhhh... my first day in this office, I learned to shut up about music because one of the women here started slagging off Busted, so I leapt to their defence and she started going on about how she far preferred proper music like Scissor Sisters.
-- Masonic Boom-Boom (masonicboo...), January 14th, 2005.

She sounds hot.

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

best U2 song ever is "Give it away" by Deepest Blue

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

but now I have Red hot chili peppers singing in my ed now.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I was amused when the pop-chick who checked out my ipod at NYE loved my inclusion of JC Chasez but baulked when I suggested she was a possible GA fan.

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Friday, 14 January 2005 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe GA really are just selling to ilX0rs and 8-year-old girls.

Miles Finch, Friday, 14 January 2005 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

GA > SB > Busted > GD > Bono

But GA rank so far above the last two that it's almost not worth comparing.

Nick H (Nick H), Friday, 14 January 2005 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think 8 year old girls like GA either

Stevem On X (blueski), Friday, 14 January 2005 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

14 year-old girls, maybe. My (under-13) sis doesn't like them and neither do her schoolmates.

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Friday, 14 January 2005 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I could totally blame the overrating of GA on ILX and Popjustice alike.

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Friday, 14 January 2005 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

all of girls aloud and sugababes are hot (except for nicole the read head in GA).I would only do Nicole if i could have Cheryl.

niccole, Saturday, 15 January 2005 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The thing where people aren't on ILX is tiresome.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 15 January 2005 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i knew this would happen. total critical backlash by march, at my guess.

It happened on ILM awhile ago. Remember how much everyone loved SS in 2003? It was nice.

Girls Aloud > Busted > Green Day > Sugababes >>etc>> Bono

The kneejerk anti-TEH BONO thing makes me feel somewhat superficial, but he's such an instution representing the things that I dislike about popular music that I can't help my reaction. And I have never claimed to stand against superficiality.

Atnevon (Atnevon), Saturday, 15 January 2005 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
well the same BULLIES i wz talking abt at the top of the thread are DOING IT AGAIN by showing me a photo of the divine GA from 'heat' in which they're all posing on a bed provocatively and asking why i prefer the 'awkward' red-headed one. WAAH.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 14:48 (nineteen years ago)

But would you do Amelle, the 5th Sugababe?

BARMS, Wednesday, 1 February 2006 18:03 (nineteen years ago)
