Best and worst ALBUM COVERS of 2001. And WHY of course.

Tom, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The Fennesz album cover and title were great. Mostly because, as Gareth pointed out, they did so much to direct how the album was heard. If it had been called "Low on Ice," people would have approached the record very differently. Some might say Autechre "put the music first" w/ titles like LP5 and Confield, but I like the playful approach of Fennesz, giving people something to talk about. Plus, that OP beach scene on the front is so charming.

A quick aside -- I never saw mentioned last year was that Microstoria titled one of the tracks on their 1996 .snd record "Endless Summer." Seems an odd coincidence.

I thought the covers of both Rooty and Hot Shots II were weak. Amateurish, but not in a clever or memorable way. And neither seemed to have anything to do with the music.

best and worst, which i just saw the other day: the vinyl cover of Druqks is 1 1/2 times as wide as it needs to be so that no matter where you file it, it sticks waaay out.

When I was at the record store last week, the owner told me the distributors had to make their own boxes in order to send it to stores because of it's odd shape.

I like the packaging on his 2 Remixes by AFX 12" as well.

I really hated the cover of that Ryan Adams album. The saviour of rock 'n' roll caught mid-do-si-do in front of an American flag, gross. Also, the Tyde album cover gave off the foulest whiff of soft focus anal retro bullshit. The music's very pretty, though.

The SFA Rings Around the World cover was great, they haven't let me down yet. I loved Rooty. And Bob Dylan looks so dashing and weird on Love and Theft--as far as personality-oriented album covers go, that's my fave.

For its simple-but-effective splendor, Slayer's "God Hates Us All" (and its attendant CD-single, "God Send Death") gets a big nod from me this year. Can't be bothered with the record, as Slayer lost all their edge a long time ago. The Amnesiac library-book edition was pretty great, too.

John Darnielle, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Can't think of many good ones. I like the cover of Simian's 'Chemistry is What We Are', clean, unfussy yet striking, and Slipknot's 'Iowa' really stood out on the shelves in WHSmiths. My favourite though, for some reason, is 'Driving Rain'. Simply but effectively rendered and Paul looked good.
Quite good efforts from The White Strips and The Hives, both striking 'we are the band' cover shots ina classic old stylee.
Which reminds me, Poptones deserve a mention for keeping a brand identity to their band's releases. So few labels do that these days in the way that 4AD and Factory used to.

Worst? I think the cover of 'Is This It' (UK version) very overrated. Just a bad idea. Was it supposed to be funny? What?
I like 'painted' covers but the covers for 'It's A Wonderful Life', 'All is Dream' and 'No More Shall We Part' looked awful as CD covers, just messy and gaudy. Perhaps they only really work as Vinyl covers.
'Feminist Sweepstakes' = ugh! Too much pink!

I'm in two minds about Tindersticks' 'Can Our Love... '. Beardy man snuggling up to a donkey. Hmmm.

Oh yeah, '10,000hz Legend''s cover was almost as good as the music. It reminded me of all the 'this is how we will live in the year 3310' futurisimo books I read as a youngster. Evocative. Good 'the future of the 1970s' typeface too.

Amnesiac book was good.

This is actually last year, properly, but I found myself staring at the Clinic album two days ago and marvelling at its front face. What amazed me was the the cover had never before struck me as unusual, and then I suddenly realized -- it's from another time entirely, a bold jaunty two-color like a cheapo 1979 release on some penniless German imprint. I think that (a) it says something important when actually-quite-"different" approaches to visual design manage to slip through and "pass" as not-strikingly-different, and (b) the new-wavey mix of guitar / "people in a room" purity and forward- looking electronicism that look recalls is perfect for what Clinic do.

Incidentally, I've now caught two Clinic videos on M2, and I find it interesting that they come across and are sold, video-wise, as "electronica" -- "The Second Line" and "Distortions" both have shifting CGI animation videos, which M2 bookends between things like Air, the Chemical Brothers, and Groove Armada. I quite like this, as it brought forth a way of looking at that record that hadn't been as much in the forefront for me.

Nitsuh, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Not to hijack this into a last-year's-Clinic discussion, but it's suddenly striking me as worth investigation that their videos are very, very modern and tech-intensive, whereas the album sleeve itself as all black and white, post-punk, distressed typewriter fonts.

Nitsuh, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I forget to actually put on one of the 'Clicks n' Cuts 2' CDs, because I'm always staring at the packaging/sleeve. It feels nice to the touch too.

The Modest Mouse EP has the worst cover AND the worst album title of the year. If the inner sleeve were the actual cover, then it'd be nicer.

The Susumu Yokota record "Grinning Cat" has an annoying fucking sticker on the front with press praise! Not on the plastic wrap, oh no, on the Digipak itself... grr.

Hmmm, I like the Avalanches cover, although it doesn't seem to quite capture the music--nice and glossy, though, so you can wipe it off if it gets dirty (?).

I continue my dislike of cardboard slip cases--Stars of the Lid's "Tired Sounds of..." is too good to shove into a potentially damaging case like that.

Clarke B., Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I like the cover of Iggy Pop's Beat 'Em Up.

I'm a dumb guy, though.

Oliver, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh yeah, WHY. I like the Beat 'Em Up cover cuz it's sleazy.

Another cover I like, though it's not sleazy, is Spoon's Girls Can Tell. Elegant, attractive imagery all around. It makes me feel jankly.

Worst cover would probably be Foxy Brown's Broken Silence. I think she's a startingly attractive woman, but not on that cover. I don't mind sleazy photos of her (I like the Chynna Doll album cover, for instance), but on the newest cover she looks like The Terminator. I can't take those sunglasses.

BEST

WORST

Honorable Mentions (for Best or Worst)

  • Any Dirtstyle/Q*Bert or Peanut Butter Wolf related breaks record -- "Sexually Tramsmitted Breaks" and "Hamburger Hater Breaks" being the respective winners.

  • http://www.kuci.org/~brianm/ile/covers/cradleoffilth.jpg Cradle of Filth "Bitter Suites To Succubi" (Definitely the best album title of 2002, which somehow enhances the cover)

Brian MacDonald, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Brian, goddamn--all your "Worst" really are fucking terrible! I really want to sock Malkmus every time I see him now.

Clarke B., Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Agree, Malkmus and New Order covers suck bit time.

the pinefox, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

BIG time, dude.

the pinefox, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I think the Malkmus borders on "So bad, it's good."

Mark, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I thought the Malkmus cover was really funny, like an Abercrombie & Fitch catalog outtake. Ooh, sun-dappled Steve.

Arthur, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The Malkmus record looks like a detail from a surfboard magazine circa '82.

My vote for worst cover goes to Luke Haines for The Oliver Twist Manifesto. The only thing it was missing from it was a slinky and a pet rock.

Andy K., Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Failed to mention that the shade of blue on the Haines record was last seen on mid-'80s Ford vehicles, particularly the Bronco and Aerostar.

Andy K., Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

That Malkmus cover is the worst. I used to like Pavement, but never even considered buying this, and the cover was a primary reason. The Ryan Adams cover isn't great, but I think he looks pretty cute there.

Sean, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

'Vespertine'. Monochromatic, squiggly swan drawing, Bjork having an attack of the vapours. It's all good.

DavidM, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Here's a good one:

Sean, you rockerboyist.

Arthur, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I agree about the Luke Haines sleeve. They should have used that picture on the inside, the close-up of half of his face. Though it might frighten the kiddies. Frightens me

For some reason, I really liked the picture on the front of the Kylie album, though I can't for a second imagine why.

My fave was probably the Stereo Total album, least fave probably Pulp

I was toying with doing a Strokes US sleeve vs. Strokes Europe sleeve best/worst thing (or even a Coup original/replacement sleeve post), but I don't think I could carry it off.

So BEST: the Acid Mothers Temple etc. and Boredoms sleeves both make me want to hear the records within. The Pulp "We Love Life" sleeve is deceptively simple, but makes you ask questions: e.g. why are the letters arranged in that order? what's the significance of the green bits? how does the design relate to the title or the record within (again, I've not heard it)?

WORST: "Miss E ... So Addictive" - a nightmare in blue.

Jeff W, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Doesn't Ryan Adams look like Matt Bellamy from Muse in that picture. And we don't need the "yeah muse are better".

Ronan, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Just looking through my purchases from last year, I realise how many of them where cheap promos from Notting Hill and Greenwich with no cover art to speak of at all.

However, we have a winner in Tina Frank's artwork for Ilpo Vaisanen's "Asuma". Lovely greens and blues - and it's 6.5" by 5.5", so it has to go on the Special Shelf.

I'd go along with the votes for Ryan Adams as worst, but it actually screams AVOID in such blaring terms, it really does its job rather well. Bent's "Programmed To Love" (which may not be 2001) has a really off-putting sleeve.

Michael Jones, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

BEST: Missy Elliot - Miss E... So Addictive - a nightmare in blue.

REALLY THE BEST: Rooty. Think of gorilla speaking in chirpy little puppy voice and it works even better.

Tim, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The only thing it was missing from it was a slinky and a pet rock.

This would make a cool album cover.

And the Ryan Adams thing reminds me of John (Cougar) Mellencamp about the time he decided to get serious and ditch the "Cougar."
