Which do you prefer and why?

Aldo. I've never heard Alva.

Arvo Part vs. Arlo Guthrie?

Alma Cogan vs. Irma Thomas?

Pablo Cruise vs. Petey Pablo?

I had to visit AMG to find out who Aldo Nova is. Alva.Noto wins because he's never played with Michael Bolton or Celine Dion. And also because Transform is very good and I doubt Aldo Nova has done anything so worthwhile this year.

Noto all the way. I wish I could be ironic and go for the Canadian guitarslinger, but he has left an un-Scotchgardable stain on my memory. You know how chain record stores stock up on things like Pink Floyd and the Eagles around Xmas time? For some unknown reason, the big huge chain retailer I worked for during high school stocked up on Aldo's debut as well. I have not-so-fond memories of sending back at least 120 copies of that record three straight Januaries inna row. Fuck you, Aldo. (Well, it's not really his fault.)

Actually, Sundar, I was browsing the "no answers" threads today while killing time at work and your question about Transform is what inspired this one. That was a nice record that received little press this year.

I hadn't thought of Aldo Nova in many years, but that "Fantasy" song was HUGE when I was 10 or 11. Just huge.

Sundar and Mark, did you guys hear the Cyclo album? It seems like something you both would really like... I love it myself--a nice pair of headphones becomes a living creature when this one's in the changer.

Clarke B., Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Holy smackers, Sundar, I thought every Canadian knew who Aldo Nova was...I remember being drenched in the song "Fantasy" when it first came out, with it lilting from every radio you passed by (sort of like the way Cher's "Believe" followed me everywhere I went). I still kind of have a soft spot in my head for Aldo Nova.

Still, he "discovered" Bon Jovi, so I have to go for Alva Noto, even though I don't know what the heck that is yet.

"How geeky is he?"

"He's so geeky that he posts to web boards about Alva.Noto albums but had to look up the All Music Guide to find out who Aldo Nova is."

sundar subramanian, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I was going to make a comment about your being the only Canadian citizen who knows of Alva.Noto and not Aldo Nova. It really could be true.

Weren't you the one who'd never heard "Don't You Want Me" when we did the Song Everyone on ILM Likes thread? Weirdo. But you think Appetite For Destruction is ridiculously overrated so you have the best taste evah!!! That was you, wasn't it?

Arthur, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Sundar that is, not Mark.

Arthur, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Arthur, with your taste (musical and in leather pants), I'm surprised you don't like "Appetite".

Sean, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Axl is a stupid man with an awful voice, his dancing is just a retarded Janis imitation, he should never have stopped teasing his hair, and Appetite is *not* the definitive hard rock album everyone thinks it is. It's OK, though. Except "Sweet Child of Mine", which is the worst sort of sub-Kansas clumsy-ass power ballad ever. It's like a Nelson song. And no amount of excellent writing on the subject (like what Kris posted a while back) can change my mind.

I love Axl as a rock 'n' roll buffoon, though, he's pretty good at that. Some of those later outfits, like the kneepads ensemble, were really funny. And the videos were awesome. Saw them live once and they were good but not great, reminded me of a less charismatic, hairier Dead Boys. Nobody seems to agree with me, though, except Sundar, bless his soul.

I lived in Hollywood at the height of G 'n' R mania, maybe that has something to do with it.

Was it easy to pick up cute long-haired Axl wannabees?

Sean, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

When did Mtv stop using that Aldo Nova riff? I'm guessing that's about when it got bad.

Kris, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh yeah, fresh off the Greyhound, piece of cake, baby.

Actually, I've never been attracted to guys with long hair.

Joking aside, I really think you lot overestimate the AOR knowledge of the average IDM listener in his 20s. I daresay mine is greater than most. One Alva.Noto-loving friend of mine had never heard of Boston, Journey, Foreigner, Styx, or Sherriff (though he did recognize "More Than a Feeling" and "When I'm With You" when I played them for him) and couldn't put a song to the name Cheap Trick. I think this would probably hold for a lot of younger people who listen to even more conventional forms of electronic music. I have a feeling though that I'd recognize "Fantasy" if I heard it.

I'm glad that my taste supremacy is starting to receive the recognition it deserves. I encourage the whole board to join in.

And this other hardcore(punk not techno)-loving friend of mine told me a couple months back that he's never heard "Dazed and Confused," which FWIW gets a lot more airplay than "Don't You Want Me?" in our hometown.

Discovered Noto last night via WFMU -- hitting all my "like" buttons.

Transform - RULES
Prototypes - RULES

the 20 to 2000 CD single is good too

The intro last night was Glass, w/Sakamoto. Sooooooo good.

WilliamC, Wednesday, 21 February 2018 15:58 (six years ago) link

Just discovered video of (most of) the Glass performance, which was at Philip Johnson's Glass House -- normally it wouldn't be too exciting for this sort of music, but at approx. 17:00, Sakamoto starts playing the contact-mic'd walls.
