"smashing your head on the punk rocK" is the exception, no?

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 14 January 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

that's almost the worst one, only being trumped by "The Sebadoh".

donut christ (donut), Friday, 14 January 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

oops, it's just SMASH.

THE FREED WEED IS GOOD TOO. (title wise)

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 14 January 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

I prefer the title "[drumroll please]"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 January 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

I thought Harmacy was a good album title, especially in tandem with the cover art. Too bad it was a stinker of a record.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 14 January 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

THE FREED WEED IS GOOD TOO. (title wise)

Which was a compilation of his first 2 solo albums: The Freed Man and Weed Forrestin'.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 14 January 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

I had that!

.adam (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 January 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

You know how you think of a funny album title and then joke to all your friends "that's going to be the name of the album we just finished", everyone laughs, and then forgets about it? Barlow is the master collection of those album title ideas.

donut christ (donut), Friday, 14 January 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

"4-song CD" is pretty funny for 30 seconds.. but pressing at least 4-digit copies of an album with a title that's worth chuckles for 30 seconds just seems wrong to me.

Never mind. "loobiecore"? I'm leaving this thread.

donut christ (donut), Friday, 14 January 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

I guess people must still give a shit about this guy.

Milton, Friday, 14 January 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

What they spray that Western MA weed with makes people extra stupid.

brg30 (brg30), Saturday, 15 January 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

lou is grandfather to alot worse ideas, titles, songs and bands then he will ever be responsible personally for..the tidal wave of detritus that followed his success is so much more heinous than his missteps.

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Saturday, 15 January 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

Very true, Mr. Bunnybrain. I remember in college a few people had fooled themselves into thinking their shitty 4-track or otherwise lofi recordings were pretty good. Come to think of it, one of those turned out to be The Tower Recordings.

Milton, Saturday, 15 January 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

don't get me started on tr

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Saturday, 15 January 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

lou is da godfather of napalm death, nirvana, and bright eyes. he gets around.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 15 January 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

I got to hear the track "Ballad Of Day-Kitty" via my friend Alicia. It's really straightforward, almost country. I'm pretty curious about this album - my copy (I'm reviewing it for Stylus) should be in the mail now.

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 15 January 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

new tower recordings is sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 15 January 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

Tower Recordings- Are they sort of "big" now? They are still broke as fuck, right? I thought their limited hand-made first 12" would be their last but I see it is reissued as a CD with a totally different cover-- I mean, not even close to the hand-made version.I just searched 'em through iTunes and the 2 albums that showed up sound MUCH better than what I heard back then. In fact, it sounds way cool. They used to pretend to be a NY band, do they actually reside in NY now?

Milton, Saturday, 15 January 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

who knows. they r great. are they big? as big as they have ever been for the last 10 years or so.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 15 January 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

folk scene is one of the best albums of the last ten years. easily.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 15 January 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

I could not do that. I am so glad I gave up my dreams 10 years ago. Also, I disliked playing live, so yeah.

Milton, Saturday, 15 January 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

i don't know why i'm stuck on the number ten.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 15 January 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

They were not big at all when I knew them, but since they're on some kind of record label, I guess they are much bigger than they used to be. Thanks for the update.

[sorry folks, end off-topic discussion]

Milton, Saturday, 15 January 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

they are very well-regarded, milton. in freakrockfolkacid circles anyway. and they have been for years. they have many fans. you should go downstairs to the noize board and ask everyone there what they think of them.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 15 January 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

confession: i've never heard a sebadoh album in its entirety.

emoh is pretty good, though. if you pretend he's just some new folk rock singer, lou rules.

tylerw, Saturday, 15 January 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

Lou is more depressing than any goth music.

Milton, Saturday, 15 January 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

you should go downstairs to the noize board and ask everyone there what they think of them.

But there's a thread on here, isn't there? (I have about four or five TR albums and related things.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 January 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if Matt has to keep his day job at the Vinyl Solution?

Milton, Saturday, 15 January 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

? = .

Milton, Saturday, 15 January 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

Emoh could well be Lou's best album-- group or solo-- to date. His discography is repeatedly stained by bad production, whether it be the expired charm of lo-fi or the flatness of Seb from Bakesale onward. (Don't even get me started about the last FI album, where the hack producer sabotaged some of Lou's best songs ever.) But on Emoh, the inspiration and execution had me muttering "holy shit, this guy is LAZARUS" on a prelisten. The string of five songs that close the album are particularly stellar.

doug watson (solid air), Saturday, 15 January 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

I like that he and Mascis have made up and did that Deep Wound reunion show.

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 15 January 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Isn't it too close to Les Savy Fav's EMOR?

alex in montreal, Saturday, 15 January 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

miccio, any olnine reviews of the deep wound show?

kephm, Saturday, 15 January 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

haven't seen any reviews, but here's a pic to whet people's appetite for the evitable Dino Jr. reunion.

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 15 January 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

Lou looks embarrassed for J.

Milton, Saturday, 15 January 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

so lou is number2 huh? i bet jay agrees.

kephm, Saturday, 15 January 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

i'm always just check out the pictures of lou's cats when im on the website.

kephm, Saturday, 15 January 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

i like it when he posts some negative e-mail he got sent and he goes on about how it hurt him and how he wants to write back but he shouldn't and wow its been three days since he got this and he's still obsessed and people don't seem to like the new album and ummm

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 15 January 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

J Mascis really doesn't look like God anymore

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 15 January 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

J in fact looks like the retarded kid down the street who still lives with momma and eats too many pork chops.

Milton, Saturday, 15 January 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Lou Barlow fucked up the scene with his wimpiness.

Tokin' Dylan, Monday, 17 January 2005 07:57 (twenty years ago)

Ant writes: i like it when he posts some negative e-mail he got sent and he goes on about how it hurt him and how he wants to write back but he shouldn't and wow its been three days since he got this and he's still obsessed and people don't seem to like the new album and ummm

And I say: It's settled! Lou Barlow and I are soulmates and he doesn't know it yet. But seriously, I wish he would write more songs like "Freed Pig."

Sara Sherr, Monday, 17 January 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

I have to say, j doesn't look that fat &/or retarded, it is just a bad pic.

three weeks pass...
I fell asleep listening to this last night (exhausted, not LB's fault) but I never knew the lyrics to Ratt's "Round-n-Round" stayed good after the awesome opening.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

It was suprising this morning hearing an advertisement for "new music" on the the NPR station out of Lexington WUKY and hearing Lou Barlow included the list.

Who did release magic family out from the base of $499 (deangulberry), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

I'm surprised no one posted that sooner.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

Man, what a pro-sounding Lou record; no hiss or pops.

He confesses to being Jesus' real father, and is devastated when kittycats leave him. The voice IS really good.
