Who's the best singer?

andy--, Friday, 14 January 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

funny, for some reason I listened to the first 2 Band LPs recently--had not heard them in a while, got all Greil Marcused-out.

I think I like Manuel's singing the best.

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Saturday, 15 January 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

Manuel is probably the "best" singer... one of the finest singers in rock, really... but I'm partial to Danko's whine. "Stagefright," "Unfaithful Servant," etc... so good.

But Levon sang on the hits, "Cripple Creek," "Dixie" and "The Weight..."

andy --, Saturday, 15 January 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

Manuel makes me cry, Levon makes me mad

Snappy (sexyDancer), Saturday, 15 January 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

they're all good singers but richard manuel ("whispering pines", "in a station") gets to me like only a few people do.

dan (dan), Saturday, 15 January 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

xxxpost:
I agree with eddie hurt. Richard is the best. The real sad songs they always gave to Richard. I like both Levon and Rick, but it's a tossup who's second. For a little more info on related topics read the Levon Helm thread from last week.

The two dan mentioned get me as well. And "Rocking Chair" does too.

Ken L (Ken L), Saturday, 15 January 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

Well, I'll just listen to DBT's "Danko/Manuel" and marvel at its beauty. No worry, be happy ...

Chris O., Saturday, 15 January 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

I think Richard Manuel, Tim Hardin, and Scott Walker are three of the finest singers in the business but they're hardly household names, eh? But soccer moms love Van Morrison's histrionic bellowing. (I do, too.)

"They say everything can be replaced / They say every distance is not near..."

I love 'em all, but Manuel by a fucking mile.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Saturday, 15 January 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

I find the Band stranger and stranger as I get older. There are times I blame them for a lot of bad "roots" music shit. In certain moods I find them mysterious, in other moods kinda smug somehow. I listened to "Big Pink" millions of times when I was younger, and now I realize how odd they really were, what an odd record that is. It's sad to realize they almost never did anything to equal those first 2 albums.

"had not heard them in a while, got all Greil Marcused-out."
Is this legal down where you live?

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Saturday, 15 January 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

Nope, no laws on books about Marcus yet. They're working on it, though. Where my parents live, north of Nashville up near th' Ken-tuck line, the local theater group got in trouble for mounting production of "Cabaret" a few years ago--Joel Grey couldn't make it into town and they were pissed. Now they're showing "Vagina Monologues" and the local newspaper won't print the word, the headline in the "Arts" section had something about "V" Monologues. John Conlee is appearing at a local sports bar.

I met old Greil once at some book fest in Nashville around '90 when the new edition of "Mystery Train" came out. He was walking around looking bemused or whatever he does and we chatted, he signed my copy. It's good, he just tries so damned hard, it's exhausting.

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Saturday, 15 January 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

"he just tries so damned hard, it's exhausting."
Greil Marcus, consider yourself NAILED.

While I'm no censorship fan, you're probably not missing much re: the monologues.

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Sunday, 16 January 2005 01:03 (twenty years ago)

they're all great--but i think levon gets extra points for being one of the best drummer/singers ever. he's great to watch on the last waltz...he really leans into the songs.

manuel's whispering pines stands alone though. bizarre/beautiful.

and come to think of it, danko's it makes no difference is killer.

like i said, all great.

tylerw, Sunday, 16 January 2005 02:36 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
Richard Manuel's is the most naturally soulful voice I have ever heard. Even on 'In a Station' (pop ballad) he sings with such feeling. His take on 'Share your love with me' is too gorgeous for words. RIP Richard.

I love Manuel and Danko but I really can't stand Levon Helm

I forget the name of the movie where all the bands took the train across Canada, but you could tell by watching it that Danko was not going to live to a ripe old age.

festival express

On the basis of "Whispering Pines" alone I'd have said Manuel until recently, when I started listening to this performance really closely, esp. to Helm's vocal. Now I think Helm's vocal is a huge part of the masterpiece that it is. Listen to the way they weave together at 1:06 to 1:09, their voices making a double helix. They do this again in the choruses afterward, each time a little different. Then there's the the song from about 2:34 on, beginning with the "standing by your well" part, where Levon leads and Richard comes in each time, as if to say: Levon, I've got your back, no matter what; like the essence of being a brother to someone.

Euler, Friday, 24 April 2009 19:52 (sixteen years ago)

i don't even want to choose, three bros that i wouldn't say a bad word about

4,000 hoes in blackburn, lancashire (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 24 April 2009 19:54 (sixteen years ago)

levon's voice has the most character. danko does the most with what he's got.

three weeks pass...

i love levon but i'm going with rick danko <3<3<3, such weird phrasing at times.
richard manuel is a fine singer but i find his stuff slightly less interesting

i think robbie's leads on kingdom come and knockin lost john are good in a strained rock singer sorta way

two years pass...

all gone now : (

still favor danko slightly but there are no losers here

buzza, Friday, 20 April 2012 05:33 (thirteen years ago)

nine months pass...

levon -strongest, most consistent
richard -most emotional (and emotionally evocative, usually)
rick -favorite
after years of listening to them, it was not until recently (few years ago) that i felt the need to be able to always pick out who is singing what, and pick a fave.
after seeing some of the footage from festival express... it was all over.
long black veil -nothing beats it.
also didn't realize growing up what a really unique thing they had

kind of a cool danko solo show from the 90s here: http://bigozine2.com/roio/?p=1331
