vetiver: good or bad?

I kind of like this. It reminds me of Andrew Bird without the violin all up in your fizzace.

If this thread gets going (yeah right), general comments about this whole san fran freak folk, six organs of admittance, white magic, faun fables, whoever else scene thing, would be appreciated.

kind of good but its never too freaky for me and Vetiver is almost too normal for my tastes. I prefer Joanna over Hope anyday

Classic!

classic

tremendoid (tremendoid), Saturday, 15 January 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

hippy = hipster

I wouldn't class faun fables with them, he cuts his hair!

I don't know why six organs gets lumped in here all the time; to me, devandra/joanna/rainywood/entrance seem distinctly different from six organs which is more akin to fahey. as far as that grouping above, I like all of them in small doses.

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 15 January 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

x-post: classic? i'd rather listen to banhart, newsom, iron & wine, or the castanets any day. i'm not saying it's bad-- it's just...fine. you know? nothing special.

six organ are tied to devendra because they tour together and devendra does a lot to promote the six organs. otherwise, it is kind of curious. their music isn't too similar.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Saturday, 15 January 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

i heard they hated each other!

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 15 January 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

vetiver's debut is pretty strong all the way through. could do without the goofier stuff (amour fou), but in general a nice, cohesive, uncluttered sound. colm o'ciosig's drums on a few tracks are really nice. i think i prefer vetiver over newsom, banhart, etc. much less annoying in the vocals department anyway,

tylerw, Sunday, 16 January 2005 05:18 (twenty years ago)

This scene is good but could be more interesting I think.. Even Devendra despite his Beefheartian lyrics seems a little restrained for me.

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 16 January 2005 09:48 (twenty years ago)

Vetiver really seem like the odd band out in that "freakfolk" scene. They sound like watered down Wilco to me.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 16 January 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

vetiver is totally mediocre; not unpleasant, but bland and unexciting.

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 16 January 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

I think "Farther On" is a really beautiful song. And it's also super catchy- ther first time I heard it it just kept running around in my head for days afterwards. Start there.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Sunday, 16 January 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

i have to say, i prefer vetiver to joanna's cat screeching vocals. i can barely stand to hear her for more than 2 seconds, her hippy dippy act doesn't fool me. devendra is alright. LOVE white magic. others to check I mentioned in my new discoveries post. chad vangaalen, grizzly bear...etc, don't know if they are "freak folk" (never really liked that term) but they outshine the holy trinity of devendra/joanna/cocorosie anyday. enough with the put on voices, for this reason alone I find vetiver to be weirdly refreshing, thank you for not goo gooing and cooing so fakely, although yes the album is sorta ho hum after a few months, but it also has it's wonderful moments

it's better than devendra. there, i said it. to hell with it, better than joanna too (but not by much). i think this is the best of the "neo-folk" (lousy label) albums released in 2004. it is criminally underrated.

why? well--people seem to be into shticks these days--we hipsters LOVE quirk. devendra? man, his voice is crazy! he's a crazy hippie! ahhhhh so whimsical. and joanna? she's like an otherworldly pixie! what planet is she from, so full of love? i adore her!

and i do. i love both of those artists. but the reason i think vetiver stands above the rest has to do with their ability to create a perfectly haunting, beautiful folk record WITHOUT the distracting quirk and hijinks. this is a mysterious, seemingly simple collection of songs that allows you to get more deeply personal and introspective than devendra ever will.

the way andy cabic sings and writes takes the listener to a place of ultimate solitude. i love joanna and devendra, but when i listen to them i am unable to suspend my disbelief, if you will. i am constantly aware, and pleased, that i am listening to a Joanna Newsom album. with vetiver, i am immersed in my own thoughts. every individual who listens to this album will gain something different from it. that's the reward of simplicity. classic.

why yes, rockaction, that is pretty correct. joanna's up there with them though. Responsible for one of my favorite sets (arthurfest, in the blublockers)
They're on the very short list of artists(3, maybe) whose next material I cannot wait to get. Their last album wasn't as strong as the first two but they've had some time to let some ideas summers. cannot wait.

i was gonna ask how this album is, but i don't care. i'm gonna buy it. i dig the vetiver. hope vinyl shows up at the record store soon. and i think that's an inspired track-listing cuz i ain't never heard half of those songs. likewise, whasserface from espers had a smiliarly impeccable hepcat roster on her covers thing.

scott seward, Friday, 25 April 2008 00:47 (seventeen years ago)

but wait, how was that remix thing that came out? i would definitely need confirmation of goodness to buy that. and i think they still have the vinyl at the store.

scott seward, Friday, 25 April 2008 00:48 (seventeen years ago)

scott, you can still stream that remix here.

beta blog, Friday, 25 April 2008 03:43 (seventeen years ago)

that is an awesome tracklist, I am sold.

the covers album is so fucking good for the most part. "Roll on Babe": one of the only ones that sounds like it could have been on the other albums, and it's up there with the best they've ever done(incidentally).

tremendoid, Monday, 19 May 2008 09:43 (seventeen years ago)

I haven't heard any of those originals, so I won't treating this as a "covers" album (with the attendant baggage)...when I buy it, that is...which will probably be this week...

henry s, Monday, 19 May 2008 13:06 (seventeen years ago)

i prefer my vetiver hushed and creepy to rockin and hoary, which is this? i was pretty divided on the merits of the last one, i still liked it a lot though.

cw, Monday, 19 May 2008 13:48 (seventeen years ago)

hushed, but keening rather than creepy.

yeah, i liked the one song i've heard. sounded like lindsey buckingham meets luna. band seems kind of inconsequential, but that might not be a bad thing.

tylerw, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 13:44 (fourteen years ago)

When I was last in Bleeker street, I bought some random singles as 'souvenirs', of which "Wishing Well" was one, and a nice single it is, indeed.

I used to listen to It's Beyond Me a lot (from the only Vetiver album I've ever listened to)

Will give To Find Me Gone a listen
