What has Chris Robinson contributed to music?

I seriously cannot think of a single thing that he has done that has not been a verbatim lukewarm retread of something else.

I am not being rockist. I have no problem with ripping off music if you do it at least semi-kinds sorta ok, but this guy has never done anything good ever.

Why does he have a career?

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Monday, 17 January 2005 05:46 (twenty-one years ago)

*Insert entire Michael Jackson "genius" thread here replacing the appropriate names* + a "Chris Robinson still has a career?"

donut christ (donut), Monday, 17 January 2005 05:49 (twenty-one years ago)

disco nihilist does your name imply you do not believe in grooves? cuz casting doubt on the worth of mr. robinson surely does! you need a remedy brother!

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 17 January 2005 05:51 (twenty-one years ago)

He has a very good radio show.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Monday, 17 January 2005 05:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Beautiful offspring, one must assume, given the visage of Ms. Hudson.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 17 January 2005 05:53 (twenty-one years ago)

If I ever had a beer with Chris Robinson, I'd probably throw it in his face, given what I've read in interviews with him ("Public Enemy isn't music" was a direct quote I believe.), but I did like much of the Black Crowes' second album.. and that one song off the first album that goes near the end "Heylittlethingletmelightyourcandlecausemamai’msurehardtohandlenowgetsaround!"

donut christ (donut), Monday, 17 January 2005 05:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I *heart* TEH GROOVEZ

but i need my grooves to actually groove. not teh reheated pseudo-grooves.

Also, I do not think that CR has the powers of:

A. the moonwalk at the 1982 motown 25th anniversary show

or

B. Quincy Jones

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Monday, 17 January 2005 05:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Lemon Jelly would disagree with you.

donut christ (donut), Monday, 17 January 2005 06:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate the way he de-syncopates Hard to Handle.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 17 January 2005 06:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Then you should hear Mae West's version of it in Myra Breckenridge.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

The first three albums had some good cuts, I kinda lost track of them after that, but I remember "High Head Blues" had a nice little groove and pretty much all of the Southern Harmony album rocked, especially "Hotel Illness" - also, "Remedy" is being used to plug that new poker series on ESPN, so that has to count for something i guess

Josh Love (screamapillar), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

dammit mike. you fucking beat me to it. chris robinson got me into anthony braxton.

He's a good frontman. I kind of think of them as the best bar band on earth who just got thrown into too big a pond.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 17 January 2005 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm sure he's supplied many w33d starved musicians with the goods

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 17 January 2005 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The Black Crowes had some pretty good albums....Jealous Again is a classic song, IMO....The best comment I remember about them was when the first album came out and some writer in Spin said something to the effect of "Yeah, they're derivative, but if this album was released this year by Rod Stewart of the Rolling Stones, every rock critic in the world would collectively SHIT themselves at the same time"

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 17 January 2005 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

that should be:

Rod Stewart OR the Rolling Stones, but yeah I guess if Rod Stewart joined the Rolling Stones alot of people would shit themselves too.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 17 January 2005 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

black crowes = awesome

no robinson hate here

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Monday, 17 January 2005 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

When I saw the Black Crowes back Jimmy Page, I was lucky enough to have scored sixth row tickets and unusually potent kind bud. Given the circumstances I could somewhat make out the old-guy jokes Chris Robinson was ribbing Jimmy with off-mic, that seem to have contributed to Jimmy getting it up to nail lightning quick riffs like on "Bring It on Home" and "Communication Breakdown" better than guys half his age ever could. He also did not remotely embarrass himself in his Plant role. For that Chris Robinson can live.

Otar, Monday, 17 January 2005 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't he accidentally light a recording studio on fire once by having too many candles in the room?

I saw him in his solo incarnation opening for Elvis Costello (!).

He sang one lyric that just worked for me in the most peotic sense possible, but now I can't remember what it was.

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Throbbing Gristle and Mika Vaino and Fushitsusha and yet The Black Crowes still played one of the best live shows I have ever seen.

.ada.m. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Admittedly it was a suny afternoon at Glastonbury and I was on drugs, but I could have kissed that man's bare feet....

.ada.m. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Southern Harmony...blahblahblah has some great stuff on it, too.

.ada.m. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

he's shockingly good singing jerry songs in the soul-jam bar band "phil and friends" (who are ten times better than you could imagine). i'm not a big dead guy, and i'm definitely not a chris robinson fan, but he does a great job.

dan (dan), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not a big dead guy

Yeah. That would be Elvis.

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Both of them!
