Rashaan Patterson's "So Hot" is the best song I've heard this year

Has anyone else heard this? No mention of it in the search.

This guy has phenomenal control of his vocals. I can't get enough of "So Hot" -- the bassist is on fire, the last few seconds where the backup singers double up a couple words of the chorus and Patterson pushes his voice to its upper registers is utterly sublime.

havent heard it but i liked stop on by, rahsaan's very first single. hes been doing some overtly classy adult-contemp neo soul since then, from what ive heard. still got to hear the new album though.

overtly classy adult-contemp neo soul

sums it up nicely. the album is great across the board, but "so hot" sounds like an instant classic -- easily blows away anything on r. kelly's "happy people" (let alone "u saved me"). that may not being saying much to a lot of people, but what i'm getting at is the production is gorgeous, as well.

i've not heard any of his earlier stuff...

check out stop on by, its kinda funky.

i like the album by van hunt, by the way, who is the guy who writes a lot of rahsaan's material. if rahsaan's new one is like that, then maybe it will be worth forking out for.

ppp: thanks for the tip on van hunt. listening to it as i speak. has a lot of the same vibe, but the vocals don't compare. good stuff, though.

the best three songs on van's album IMO - dust, hold her hand and down here in hell. the rest is okay, but he seems a bit tepid in places.

i listened to a bit of the Van Hunt album in the store and thought it sounded like Lenny Kravitz

Wasn't this guy on Kids, Inc. as wee'un?

Wasn't this guy on Kids, Inc. as wee'un?

That's as *a* wee'un, and, if so, good on him for finding life outside of childhood stardom.
I heard the tiniest snippet of one of his tunes and thought "Dude's got some good pipes."

van sounds nothing like lenny kravitz. that sounds like blatant stereotyping.

why, because they're both black?

Hella Fitzgerald (JasonD), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago) link

well yeah. sorry, its just that i cant see any other reason for comparing them. enlighten me.

it's been way too long since i've heard it, but their voices reminded me of each other and maybe the style of songwriting? i really don't remember. i also thought Cody Chestnut sounded like Lenny. i guess that makes me part of the KKK

put the burning cross down please.

the cody/lenny voice thing i can understand, yeah.

also, can a moderator please correct my overly eager typing in the thread title to "raHSaan"?

six years pass...

His fifth studio album Bleuphoria is out on July 19:

01. I Only Have Eyes for You
02. Ghost
03. Crazy (Baby)
04. Easier Said Than Done
05. Stay With Me
06. Miss You
07. Goodbye
08. Bleuphoria
09. Mountain Top
10. Makin' Love
11. 6 AM
12. Insomnia
13. God

I'm not too fond of his first two albums, but I think After Hours is great, and the follow-up from 2007 was good as well. Anyone else a fan?
