Taking Sides: Mystery Train v. Pet Sounds

One for the Irish Readers, as these are radio programmes here.

Mystery Train is presented by John Kelly and is an eclectic brew of world, jazz, volk, trad, bits of indie and postrock and stuff, funny music and so on. Pet Sounds is more straight down the line "indie" or alternative, and is presented by Tom Dunne of Something Happens!.

I like Mystery Train. I think it's the only music radio programme I listen to.

But others scoff at it as playing the kind of music your Dad likes (if only my Dad were so cool).

Tom Dunne, meanwhile, is a genial presenter, but the programming policy is a bit bland, playing mainstream music that trend people will consider alternative.

Mystery Train is on RTE Radio 1 from 7.00 to 8.00 on weekdays.

I'm not actually sure what station Pet Sounds is on... what's the name of the national independent station? It might be on that. Or on some stupid Dublin station.

sorry that's not very helpful.

note that I have completely forgotten to mention Dave Fanning's programme on 2FM, because it is completely rubbish.

DV, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

fanno used to be good in the 1980s (a period of ye liveliest awfulnesse in the annals of irish rock, funny enough), but these days he just plays whatever someone tells him The Kids are into - he doesn't seem to actually like music himself any more.

velocitygrrl, you might be able to pick up mystery train by trying the streaming thingy at http://www.radio1.ie/ .... if not, there are playlists from previous shows at http://www.rte.ie/mysterytrain/index.html

When Mystery Train was on what was originally Radio Ireland it was far and away the best programme on Irish radio. Wasnt it called "The eclectic ballroom" or something? Yeah, it was brilliant. Then it went on Radio 1 and I lost touch with it. Pet Sounds is worth listening to from time to time although it can be pretty bland and I guess you could call the music he plays as "commercial alternative". There is some good music but too much shitty power-pop stuff and he plays way too much Starsailor. DV: What do u think of "Here comes the night"? I listen to it from time to time but his taste is a bit too Giles Peterson and I cant say I share his enthusiasm for obscure 70's jazz-funk. Overall, I say Mystery Train but I havent listened to it in yonks. Fanning seems a bit redundant now and he never understood dance music but it was my formulative listening in my teenage years.

nelly: Pet Sounds is on Today FM.

How about TV music in Ireland, No Disco, The Sound Room, Darragh Purcell and so forth?

David, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

And John Kelly has The View, aswell.

David, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I used to make sure I'd catch "No Disco" when it was on but now i couldnt be bothered, I find it dull. I hate that new presenter too. Leagues O' Toole?!

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Leagues still seems slightly nervous after all these months, and he shouldn't show so many intimate David Kitt performances of "You Know What I Want To Know". On another matter, can't say I dig Fanning's interview technique but his is the show I listen to most.

David, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Leagues was good on The Sound Room though, as far as I remember.

David, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I enjoyed the discussions on "The Sound Room" although Darragh Purcell irks me somewhat. What happened to it anyway? Was it scrapped? Fanning is a terrible interviewer. He always seems to ramble on with a question for 5 minutes and then answer it himself. Very annoying. There's "Rince"(?) on TnaG as well but thats balls. Lots of comatose trip-hop and tepid beats.

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Was it scrapped?

Pretty much. Purcell just finished one night by suddenly saying, "And join us next week for the last ever Sound Room." His Witnness reports really pissed me off, when he was getting informal with Pat O'Mahony. He said "Man" too fucking much. It would be good to have him back on some show though.

whoopsadaisy.

David, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

ug Purcell up the mo'fo.

David, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I think someone should give BP Fallon his own radio or TV show.

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

He stood in for Donal Dineen a while back on Today FM.

David, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

k

David, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yeah, I know he stood in for Donal Dineen. I thought he was way way better. He had like a punk night, dance night, 60's night. It was class.

Michael Bourke, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

When Mr. Spring stood in for Dave Fanning, he kicked his ass too. Although I could do without those "wacky" remarks he makes in the middle of EVERY song.

Michael Bourke, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I don't know about Mr. Spring. I could never listen for more than ten minutes usually. Oh, and fat props for mutual insomnia.

David, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

No bother, heh heh.

Michael Bourke, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

DV: What do u think of "Here comes the night"? I listen to it from time to time but his taste is a bit too Giles Peterson and I cant say I share his enthusiasm for obscure 70's jazz-funk.

I don't know this 'here comes the night'... who does it and what station is it on?

or these 'television' programmes of which you speak. I hate TV.

DV, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ha, and there's me thinking this'd actually be Elvis vs. the Beach Boys!

Robin Carmody, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

"Here comes the night" is on Today FM every week night from 11 to 1. Donal Dineen of No Disco presents it. It's right after Pet Sounds.
