...sounds like a fuckin' car alarm.

Discuss.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

why do you always spell fucking like fuckin'?

scg, Wednesday, 19 January 2005 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Can you get ring tones for car alarms yet?

dr. phil (josh langhoff), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Did J.Lo go rave?????

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

why do you always spell fucking like fuckin'?

Because it upsets you.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this the current single? If so, it sounds like Work It Out by Beyonce with a big bit of fluff in one of the grooves making it skip back.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously, though. There's a sampled saxophone loop that could make a dog's head explode. I have no idea who thought that was a good idea. Otherwise, it's the usual thin, breathy, meatless fodder that we've come to expect from her (the vido rife with undue amounts of midriff exposure, all that's old is new again). But that sax loop. Good lord. Who approved that?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Vido Rife is now the name of a character in my novel.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I was watching this video last night, and said to my wife that someone should release a track that has an actual car alarm go off for about 15-20 seconds in the middle - just long enough to really piss off everyone in the vicinity. Then the song resumes, and then the car alarm comes back again after, say, the third chorus. It could be even more annoying than Puffy's "Uh-huh, uh-huh" thing.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

it doesn't upset me! i was just wondering. it seems a little pretentious maybe? a bit 'gonzo'. actually i guess it takes just as long to type ' as it does g. i like the new j lo video though. she looks really cute as the nerd, and when she starts dancing.

scg, Wednesday, 19 January 2005 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

the chorus is amazing. the video is the weirdest thing ever.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

the beat was originally used by Usher on a Confessions outtake. I think it's ok. I love Rich Harrison but it's not his best work (which would be the new Amerie single, "One Thing").

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I read that Harrison used to play sax and piano. I wonder if he sampled his own sax playing for this?

steve-k, Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I liked this song pretty good. The new Amerie single is great too, although i don't like it quite as much as "why don't we fall in love."

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Since when is using an apostrophe pretentious?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I love this single but it is true that if you hear it in the morning you'll be hearing that sax loop in your head for the rest of the day.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

This could have conceivably been the first JLo song I liked, if only oh only that squealy sax had just a little bit of variation in it. As it is, it's possibly the worst song I can think of at the moment.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

The problem is that the sax clashes with the vocals, sharing too much of the same frequency range without being in any kind of orchestrated harmony. What a shit song.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

The sax makes the song.
You ppl suck.

jlo's next himbo, Wednesday, 19 January 2005 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

"Why Don't We Fall In Love (which, admit it, "Crazy In Love" was a in some ways inferior rewrite"

al could u say more about this? i'm finding it hard to admit to what seems an in some ways crackpot theory

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I'm not sure I see the connection between the two songs, and although I think she's a better singer than beyonce and i do love that song, crazy in love still trumps it in my mind.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Crazy In Love is one of those truly one-of-a-kind pop hits. I don't think you can really compare it to that J-Lo track.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

We're comparing it to the Amerie track.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"why don't we fall in love," that is, not the new one.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, whoops.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 20 January 2005 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Well it's better in any case.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 20 January 2005 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm waiting for J.Lo to do a sequel to Gigi!

The sax is all the song has going for it. Other than that, it's "I'm Real" all over again.

Huk-L, Thursday, 20 January 2005 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

great video!!

g--ff (gcannon), Thursday, 20 January 2005 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I was just saying, Re: "Crazy In Love"/"Why Don't We Fall In Love", same producer, similiar vocal melody, especially on the verses. but really RH seems to write the same kind of verse vocals on a lot of his stuff, both those songs plus this J.Lo one and the new Amerie. listen to them all, there's a sameyness to the vocal melodies.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 20 January 2005 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

bad song. but she has a nice abdomen.

Star Cauliflower (Star Cauliflower), Thursday, 20 January 2005 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

what about her thorax!?

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 20 January 2005 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Al I know what you mean about the vocal melodies in the verses - they're similar across all three songs although I think the style and grooves are different. Apart from that though "Why Don't We Fall In Love" seems very different to "Crazy In Love". "One Thing" is quite obviously Amerie's "Crazy in Love" answer record though.

I don't mind this on initial listen but you can't really hear the chorus easily 'cos J's voice is so high and thin on it. I'm reserving judgment for the moment though as I doubted "Jenny From The Block" for a long time and ended up loving it.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 20 January 2005 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

That second paragraph is re: "Get Right" BTW.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 20 January 2005 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

also the doomchant chorus richcraft rmx of 'why dont we' would be a better comparison to 'get right' vocal-wise but then why not any amerie song? that u can tell a person is responsible a few songs is still some way from a "rewrite", the dodgy superior/inferior business aside

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Thursday, 20 January 2005 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I agree with that. I'm glad you mentioned the Richcraft Remix of "Why Don't We Fall In Love" prima, that's my favourite thing ever, apart from all the other things. BABY BABY BABY BABE BABY!

Is 2005 gonna be Richcraft's year? That's 3 songs out at once (cos "Soldier" is him yeah?)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 20 January 2005 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

there is something unsettling about j.lo. i think this stems from the fact that i still fancy her even though i know this is a bad thing

stelfox, Thursday, 20 January 2005 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

dammit that song sucks.

"okay, the neptunes use really weird and simplistic samples sometimes, we can do that too. here, let's use this kenny g shit. never mind that there is absolutely no idea behind it and that the beat has less identity than tap water. the critics will marvel at this song's audacity´: a simplistic sax sample that just goes on and on and on and on - wuaw!"

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Thursday, 20 January 2005 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

the richcraft rmx chorus sounds so evilly offkey but it comes off like "love me now or dieee"! one of the best ever orignal-rmx dialogues, along with the dizzee i love u rmx. can we think of any more?

soldier is him yeah

also 'one thing' is off an album sampler! i really like 'talking about' (might not be called that but i just tidied my room so no checking) ronnie herel has been playing 'rollin down my face' and there's another one that didnt grab me but could well sound satisfying in album context

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Thursday, 20 January 2005 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I think she's a better singer than beyonce.
-- djdee2005 (ddrak...), January 19th, 2005.

ARE YOU ON CRACK COCAINE??? go listen to 'if you want my love' and let's talk again. if you are not convinced by that track, i will go join conor oberst's band and think of nothing but pointlessness, death, insignificance and cheap workwear for the rest of my days.

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Thursday, 20 January 2005 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

indeed it was

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 January 2005 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Um retards I'm not talking about JLo, I was talking about Amerie.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 20 January 2005 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, right. I skipped it thinking it was banter. By the way, I'd like to take this opportunity to express my Alex in NYC fandom.

Jole, Friday, 21 January 2005 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

This song is the hotness! it's actually impossible to ignore, it really forces you to pay attention and either dance or run away.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 28 January 2005 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

the sax squeal is a bit overdeployed (every four and i'd be in love) but i need to hear this coming out of something other than my tv so i can get the wibbly undercurrent bits. still, great great vid, best thing she's done since out of sight.

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 28 January 2005 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't even notice there was a sax when i first heard it then I saw it mentioned here and heard it again and it was just very obviously there. Now its the only bit from the song that I can remember.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 28 January 2005 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Best single of 2005.

So far.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Friday, 28 January 2005 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

oh do please give me one break.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 28 January 2005 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard this for the first time on Top of the Pops tonight, just as I was about to launch into my "J-Lo's records are so beige" spiel, and it kicked my arse. That sax break is fantastic, I think it needs to be so insistent, especially when it spins out into the rest of the solo. At some points the song sounds like it's going out of key in the most brilliant way imaginable, like there's three or four songs playing simultaneously or it's a really inept mash-up. Best J-Lo Single Evah.

Soz Alex.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Friday, 28 January 2005 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah it was that TOTP performance which made me find this thread! All of the things which at first sound really discordant are completely necessary to the way it nuclear sirens its way into your consciousness. The repetition and insistence of the car-alarm sax break totally pays off when everything else drops out (and on TOTP J-Lo did this amazing dance breakdown: dancing even more frenetically when the beat drops OUT = the most classic).

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 28 January 2005 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Me and Mrs Vague were speculating about how J-Lo's trousers stayed up, her theory was that it was her arse keeping them in place, I thought there must've been some sort of tit-tape gizmo involved. I also said at the time "I'm going to have to go on ILM later and rant about this."

Girls Aloud were pretty great too, but their song kind of suffers by not being "Love Machine".

noodle vague (noodle vague), Friday, 28 January 2005 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I assumed there was arse-tape involved: they did seem to defy gravity completely. I missed the Aloud, oh no! I only caught the last three songs (wtf is that dreadful Athlete rubbish doing in the charts). I'm in awe of Ciara and her dancing though.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 28 January 2005 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, and her two dancers looked like they would happily stab you in the face if you said the wrong thing.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Friday, 28 January 2005 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that a good thing?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 January 2005 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, and her two dancers looked like they would happily stab you in the face if you said the wrong thing.

Not if I stabbed them first.

My prediction: J-Lo's new album goes the way of Damita Jo.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 28 January 2005 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, and her two dancers looked like they would happily stab you in the face if you said the wrong thing.

yes! they had the mother of all ATTITUDES etched on their faces. Also, I actually think Ciara has now overtaken Beyoncé in the arse-wiggling stakes.

(Alex these dancers are Ciara's not J-Lo's. Not that I think you have any time for her either.)

(J-Lo had a LOT of dancers.)

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 28 January 2005 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I think looking like that is cool, Ned. I wouldn't advocate the actual face-stabbing, obviously. Unless it was one of those dreary gits out of Athlete.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Friday, 28 January 2005 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

What if Athlete stabbed you in the face?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 January 2005 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Knife-wielding dancers -- the wave of the future.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 28 January 2005 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Athlete could never do anything so interesting as stabbing someone in the face.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 28 January 2005 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

If Athlete stabbed me in the face I would be so amazed that they had done something interesting and memorable that I probably wouldn't register any pain.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Friday, 28 January 2005 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

My prediction: J-Lo's new album goes the way of Damita Jo.

haha good luck w/ that prediction....

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 28 January 2005 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

D'oh! Lex beat me to it.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Friday, 28 January 2005 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

(yeah on the J-Lo note I think "Get Right" will be absolutely massive, just because it is absolutely impossible to ignore, even if you're just hearing it in the shop or whatever.)

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 28 January 2005 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno, I still haven't heard it and/or if I have I've ignored it. But I could be moving on an inner plane.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 January 2005 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only heard it a couple of times (woo, I have just downloaded it though so will put it on LOOP now), it's entirely possible you haven't heard it! It's like a buzzsaw for the reasons which Andrew points out upthread - The problem is that the sax clashes with the vocals, sharing too much of the same frequency range without being in any kind of orchestrated harmony - except I think this is a good thing.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 28 January 2005 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

nobody can like this, i'm sorry, they just can't. it's one of the worst first singles from a name pop star in a long time.

well put me on the side of the idiots because it's drilled its way into my head. granted i haven't heard it on the radio but the video is some kind of wonderful, almost a thesis on the difficulties faced by brave working women. oh, and hot nerds who look weirdly like jennifer garner doing a sydney bristow even though they're really jennifer lopez. it's hard to remember what a good actor she is when she's such a sourpuss all the time, but i'll take this song in video form any time.

I don't have to hear this song to know it is utter and complete crap. I can't even fathom the world you guys are living in, but hey, to each his own.

Wouldn't it be nice if we had more threads about music simply because we like it rather than as some convenient punching bag? Does this song need more publicity or something?

I am agnostic on the point because sometimes sax in pop songs can work for me. Sometimes. Only sometimes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 29 January 2005 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn this song blows. Didn't someone realize that her voice and the sax were in the same register during the chorus and step all over each other in the lamest of ways? Like, you know, before they released it? Throw in that dead fish of a beat and you've got yourself a real winner.

I was listening to 92Q a few weeks ago when I heard this for the first time - after it was over the DJs came on and made fun of it for sucking. 92Q rules.
