TS: James Brown or The Fall?

Two notorious task masters responsible for marrying highly rhythmic music to incomprehensible shrieks and mumbling. But which say ye? Kid Dynamite or the Hip Priest?

Drink the long draft.

I wouldn't call what James Brown does "incomprehensible shrieks and mumbling"; JB just transcends language. (he lets his FUNK do his talking for him...)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 20 January 2005 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

interesting comparison--both have made a million albums of mostly high quality. I like the Fall and love James Brown, more kick to what JB and his family of musicians do. If Mark E. can guest on a Mouse on Mars track, why not get him with James and do it up right?

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Thursday, 20 January 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

both have fired and hired entire bands mid-tour.

Snappy (sexyDancer), Thursday, 20 January 2005 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

both have fired FAMILY MEMBERS* mid-tour.

*=(both sons and wives.)

How could you possibly compare? Apples and oranges, holmes. JB changed music forever. He spawned a million imitators (not always a good thing) and worked his bands over his knee until they screamed COUSIN. I've also never heard of JB referred to as Kid Dynamite (a Squirrel Bait song and also Steve Miller's backing band once they left his eagle-like tallons) - where did that come from?
Anyway, as much as I love the Hip Priest he never really cranked out a ballad that could make me weep like JB. And Hip Priest can't dance to save his life.

James Brown and Mark E. Smith are just two manifestations of the same God.

James Brown and Mark E. Smith are just two manifestations of the same God.

This is beautiful.

Jena (JenaP), Saturday, 25 February 2006 23:02 (twenty years ago)

haha. I haven't heard much James Brown. Where should I start?

Harpal (harpal), Saturday, 25 February 2006 23:31 (twenty years ago)

Check out "20 All-Time Greatest Hits" or the 40th- or 50th-anniversary collection. Or just go for the four-CD box, "Star Time." You won't regret it.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Sunday, 26 February 2006 03:04 (twenty years ago)

REGGAETON!!!!!!!!!

Confounded (Confounded), Sunday, 26 February 2006 03:50 (twenty years ago)

Agreed that the "Star Time" box is really, truly worth it, even as an introduction--the boxed set against which all others are found wanting.

Douglas (Douglas), Sunday, 26 February 2006 04:08 (twenty years ago)

It's hard to even imagine how anyone could make a better box set than that. Might be an interesting exercise to even try to conceptualise such a thing.

three years pass...

We just got a Kindle, and I was trying to think of some music books to put on it, and all I could come up with in the Kindle store that interested me was "The Fallen", about all the ex-Fall members, and a few James Brown biographies (though I have no idea which one is the best).
