Oh man this is pretty fucking dirty sounding, I like it a lot. Not as good as the original, but great anyway.

Fuck it this is fucking awesome. I love the gutter ass sound and the female vox sample that comes in on Mike Jones verse and the kicking snares and shit.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 21 January 2005 07:07 (twenty-one years ago)

it's an all right mix but what song does diplo sample? it sounds so so familiar but i can't place it.

adam west (adamwest), Friday, 21 January 2005 07:35 (twenty-one years ago)

PJ Harvey.

Xii (Xii), Friday, 21 January 2005 07:46 (twenty-one years ago)

haha weird, i did not know that. It works though.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 21 January 2005 07:49 (twenty-one years ago)

it's cool, especially the drums. but i prefer the original - this has that kind of disconnected quality that you get when you try to match a new track to already recorded vocals. or maybe that's all me.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Friday, 21 January 2005 09:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Goddamnit, why didn't I think to sample that. Anyway, that's great.

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 21 January 2005 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i've listened to this like seven times in a row now, this is fucking HOT. (i actually can't really remember what the original sounds like because i downloaded it with about 45843095845 other things in my end-of-2004 downloading rush and only listened to it a handful of times, will fix that now, though)

joseph (joseph), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

alright, listening now. i'm actually unsure which i like more. paul wall's line about "crawling similar to an ant 'cuz i'm low to the earth" is still brilliant.

joseph (joseph), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

That song is so full of quoteables its fucking ridiculous. Easily one of the best songs of the year.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

It's interesting and I really like the breakdowns at the end of each verse but I miss that sparse feeling of the original.

thank god i ain't too cool for the safe belt (smile), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i think one of the greatest things about this remix though is during paul wall's verse when you can audibly hear pj harvey's lyric from "down by the water" being looped over and over: "and now i HOLLER." (bonus points for mental image of polly jean sippin' on syrup with slim thug)

joseph (joseph), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh, somehow I completely missed the PJ Harvey connection -- I was thinking part of the quieter breaks sounded more like the intro to "Strangelove" by Depeche (album version).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

that strung-out string sample throughout the whole thing is from "Down By The Water" as well! This song is the bomb. Mental image of PJ Harvey and Slim Thug together can't be topped this year.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Eh, not as good as the original, and I like the Michael Watts s&c remix on The Day Hell Broke Loose 2 better than both.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Friday, 21 January 2005 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Cham's verse on that version, but I don't like the beat nearly as much as the final version w/ paul wall.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 21 January 2005 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
I finally put this on a CD and listened to it driving. Really only works louder than I can play things on my computer (also: doing 80).

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

This remix is epic as shit when I'm roaming the streets, I must say. Very clever work from Diplo. Went back and listened to "Down By The Water" and decided the money is in the 808s, as he didn't have to do much with the sample.

Although it can lead to troubles, whenever I think of PJ Harvey, it almost assures an erection.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

this is possibly the worst remix in the history of remixes.

bn, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

(umm, when did the blog view start showing the most recent comment as the preamble underneath the thread title? i came in here looking for a discussion about why this "is possibly the worst remix in the history of remixes" and the discussion was nothing of the sort. until the most recent comment).

gspm (gspm), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

i have no idea but i dont think its a bad remix at all.

djdee (djdee2005), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

Personally, I fuckin love it.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 3 March 2005 03:08 (twenty years ago)

i still love this a whole hell of a lot.

Pretty much dead on... Even when the drums aren't so shitty, he doesn't go anywhere with things. The "Notorious" remix had some cool things going on at the beginning, but then just continued to plod along for 4 mins without ever going for the throat. Also, bass mastered too high, pretty typical move for adding "oomph" to weak and poorly mixed tracks, esp if you're playing for cokeheads more concerned with their haircuts than whatever shit they're dancing poorly to. Maybe soon he'll have earned enough money from other people's records to learn how to produce properly.

My collaboration with 10 Bob Note has been withdrawn from circulation. It's tender, but not legally so.

Croydon Council have written to me about "Still Tippin'"; without a licence I cannot continue to dispose of garden refuse in this way. I may have to reconsider my position.

oh plz 'gutter' in that context is not used like 'bmore gutter music' racial voyeurism, its used to describe how dirty the sound of the record is. the steendriver can kiss my BIG HOOS
