College A Capella Groups - C/D

I know that college a capella groups must surely have a reputation for being unbearably cheesy and lame in their finger-snapping white-kid preppiness, but I have to admit I sort of have a soft spot for them.

I saw a group perform at Chapel Hill in early '96, when I was scouting out UNC to maybe go to school there (I didn't), and while I don't remember exactly which songs they did, I dp remember being pretty amazed at how they translated all of the instrumental parts into voice. Later, my own college had a short-lived group, with equally interesting renditions of "No Diggity," "Groove is in the Heart," and Prince's "Seven," among others.

I was reminded of this whole phenomenon while browsing through the iTunes store just now and happening upon the 2001 Best of College A Capella compilation, full of choral renditions of Steely Dan, Tori Amos, Madonna, the Rolling Stones, etc. Being able to listen to the clips is actually pretty fun: "Peg" ends up sounding (predictably) like the Manhattan Transfer; "Wild Horses" is remarkable because it adds layers of harmonies and rhythm that aren't even in the original but oddly enough work; and check out the pounding "beat" on "Ray of Light"! Apparently, this series of compilations go back to 1995, but the 1999 edition is the only other one available through iTunes.

I'm guessing that part of the pleasure in something like this is akin to the pleasure you get from an impersonator: you marvel at the performers' ability to summon the original within limited means.

New "you fucking pussy" answers here!

Original idea for a thread, no doubt.

I very briefly dated a girl in one of these groups, and I did admittedly swoon when she sang the solo in Big Yellow Taxi.

I met some acapella people through the same group of friends via whom I met that girl. The problem I had with it was the whole "scene" nature of it. It reminded me of the newspaper, or Hillel, or Campus Crusade for Christ even.

But the few concerts I attended were surprisingly non-awful

There was a bootleg record called Killed by Absurdity a few years ago with a bunch of "found songs." One of them was an awesome rendition of Toto's "Africa" by one of these groups.

after perusing those links i totally want to hear the acapella version of "6 Underground" now.

im gonna go on record as saying that im hateful towards all forms of organized choir. A-Capella groups and the polyphonic spree both drive me to complete homicidal insanity.

cool idea for a thread, tho.

i'm a unc student now, and holy shit there are just 0390287592452 billion a capella groups here. and if it weren't for the oversaturation i might be impressed. but nearly everyday there's a group somewhere on campus bobbing their stupid heads with uber-grins plastered to their faces.

rob mackey (mackey), Monday, 24 January 2005 07:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic, I'd say... A Completely Different Note up at UConn is fantastic, and they've improved tremendously over the years. The Brown Derbies are fantastic at Brown, and UVA's Virginia Gentlemen are well renowned as well...

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Monday, 24 January 2005 07:44 (twenty-one years ago)

they were awful and they revealled how awful the
songs they were covering were, and for that, we
should thank them and buy them pizza.

We had hundreds of them at my university and the all attracked a weird cult audience, which in an dof itself was pretty awesome. a guy i was friends with later on did some time in group and i think that stint put the capital "D" in his musicdorkdom.

Passing by a NYU streetfair I came upon a group doing Radiohead's "idoteque" which was surprisingly great.

out now, or soon, is Petra hagen's full acapella version of The Who Sell Out, commercial bits and all.

I especially want JBR and Dan Perry to weigh in on this thread.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 24 January 2005 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

okay, when i go back to college, i'm sooo joining one of these..

does anyone know if there is one in madison?

I have a soft spot for this stuff - some of the kids can REALLY sing. My favourite find to date is U. Penn.'s "Off The Beat" doing "Brick".

first one to sample one of these groups over a beat wins a grammy.

“I couldn’t play an instrument well enough to be in a band, so I thought, O.K., this sounds like something I should look into,” (James) Van Der Beek said. And yes, membership had its privileges. “A girl heard me sing ‘Englishman in New York’ and I got to, like, go to her dorm room to give her our CD.” But now, he seemed less enthusiastic about those exploits. “I can’t believe I’m talking about this,” he said.

WAS DANG PERRY A KROKODILOE??

gff, Monday, 24 March 2008 16:09 (seventeen years ago)

There was a bootleg record called Killed by Absurdity a few years ago with a bunch of "found songs." One of them was an awesome rendition of Toto's "Africa" by one of these groups.

There's the one that became a hot YouTube clip recently featuring the Indiana University all-male group doing "The Twelve Days of Christmas," which then segued amazingly into "Africa."

jaymc, Monday, 24 March 2008 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

I was not a Krok. I thought about auditioning but I probably would not have gotten in. I almost joined the Din & Tonics but I would have had to have quit the men's chorus I was singing in and, since I was vice-president, I didn't feel right about doing that. (In retrospect, I REALLY REALLY REALLY SHOULD HAVE.) Instead, I sang with HGC Lite, a psuedo-a capella group for guys who wanted the experience but didn't want to quit the Glee Club. I sang "Stray Cat Strut" as my one and only solo song.

HI DERE, Monday, 24 March 2008 18:19 (seventeen years ago)

I can't sing so I wouldn't join an a capella group, but I would join a club where all we would do is come up with terrible punny names for a capella groups and their CDs.

musically, Monday, 24 March 2008 19:17 (seventeen years ago)

my dad sang in a barbershop quartet in college so classic. though please note this was circa 1950.

m coleman, Monday, 24 March 2008 19:21 (seventeen years ago)

my god, dan, all the singing!! heavy politics around all this singing groups, too, by the look of it.

xp yeah barbershop is actually kind of amazing. if there were dudes into street-style doo wop that would be rad too.

gff, Monday, 24 March 2008 19:24 (seventeen years ago)

Hahaha man, tell me about it! At various times I sang with:

- University Choir (every Sunday church service + religious holidays)
- Morning Choir (subset of UC that sang a weekday morning vespers service at 8:45 AM)
- Glee Club (all-male choir singing 2-part to 8-part harmony music)
- HGC Lite (Glee Club a capella doing goofy arrangements of things like "The Bear Necessities" and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love")

Never did any shows because I was convinced I couldn't carry off being a solo singer in a college setting. I was an idiot.

gershy, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 02:53 (seventeen years ago)

went to a a cappella thing last night. singing geeks are a very specific kind of geek! related to other kinds of geeks but there is something unique about them. one group did a rendition of "free fallin" with new lyrics about wearing no underwear. guess what it was called.

max, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 17:45 (seventeen years ago)

i sang in collegiate-style a cappella groups from grade seven until sophomore year in college e_e

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 17:58 (seventeen years ago)

i have the CDs somewhere; the last time i listened to them i was appalled at the number of pitch problems and rhythmic wonkiness that i had not heard at the time.

My sister was in an a cappella group whose repetoire included a pretty smoking rendition of the Pixies "Hey".

kingkongvsgodzilla, Thursday, 17 December 2009 13:47 (sixteen years ago)

May or may not be worth noting this was prior to TV on the Radio's a cappella "Mr. Grieves".

Forgive my ignorance, but at what point did it become de rigueur for performers (or hearers) of that song to repeat the "So good" a few times? Was it a commercial, a sporting event? I don't remember that bit from the original record or from Elvis rendition.
