Just to keep the music writers out there on edge, let's compile a list of recurring expressions that keep showing up in music reviews. I'm curious to see the funniest phrase that gets the most hits. Here's a few phrases I often see:

Um, Shakey, your example is good, but don't you think you should have used quotes or hyphens? In that case you get 620 hits.

And I guess people got cured of "punkish urgency" before the Internet was invented (I only got 14 hits), but man was I ready to slaughter the next guy I saw using that.

Personally, I don't think I've knowingly used any of these, though I do use "lickety-split" way too often.

For it to count, you have to put the phrase in quotes like:

"Sounds like that guy from pearl jam" or
"angular guitar riffs"

If your search gets more than 10,000 hits, you probably didn't do that, and you're just getting results that have the words you entered instead of the phrase.

There's a recent online interview with Verbena front-man Scott Bondy where he bemoans the constant use of the word "grunge" to describe his band's sound, and a quick Google of the phrase "Verbena grunge" does yield 450 results (make that 451).
