I really like this madly enough. Don't know a thing about Digweed but despite it being made up of mostly "dance dog latin doesn't like", i think it's ace!

what do you guys think - also can you give me a bit of background about Digweed's history?

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

i told you so.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

what's on it?

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

it's... well it's house music i guess but without the naffness i often associate with the genre. yes, there's the odd female vocal but the cheese is kept to a minimum. i guess you could call it mongey/stoner house.

is this what people mean when they talk about prog-dance?

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

track list:

01 - Pete Moss- Strive To Live (16b Mix)
02 - Adam Johnson – Traber
03 - Repair – Forgive + Forget (Richard Davis Remix)
04 - DJ Rasoul – True Science
05 - The Glass – Won`t Bother Me (20:20 Mix]
06 - Billy Dalessandro – In The Dark
07 - Bobby Peru – Venom
08 - Martin Solveig – Rocking Music (Martin Solveig Dub)
09 - Slam - Lie To Me (FreestyleMan Thirsty Monk Dub)
10 - Angel Alanis – Knob Job
11 - Infusion - Better World (Josh Wink Mix)
12 - Superpitcher – Happiness (Michael Mayer Mix)
13 - Joel Mull – Emico
14 - Matrix and Danny J - Vertigo [Goldtrix Remix]

on seeing the tracklist i was intrigued by this and while it's by no means bad, it's a bit tepid -- like digs has only got halfway to making up for his past sins. been a while since i put this on so i can't be much more specific than that.

martin turenne, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

i understand he used to be a really cheesy trance dj right?

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

I've always thought of him as a non cheesy trance/prog-house DJ.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

more wine than cheese. and more wine spritzer than wine. he's always been just a tad too polite for my tastes, but just a tad. some mates of mine have a serious hate on for him, but i've always been inclined to defend him, if not too vigorously.

martin turenne, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

it's not my favourite thing ever, i must say but i find it just rather pleasant to listen to. there's no pretentions as to trying to be something that it isn't other than tuneful dance music and although i come from an idm/techno/hardcore grounding, i can totally get that compared to the recent weatherall one which disappointed me a lot in its half-arsery.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

how so half-arsed? agreed that this wasn't a shining moment for weatherall, but i'd take its more vigorous moments over digweed's mix, which is just a bit too pleasant for me.

martin turenne, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

oh no, "pleasant"

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

I have a few mad nights out courtesy of Mr. Digweed, unfortunately I find his mixed CD's a bit on the boring side... tons of setup with no delivery. The one glaring exception to that is Communicate, a 2 Disc Mix co-mixed with Sasha... it is a real masterpiece in my mind (especially Disc 1). If you want to check out some interesting and classic Sasha and Digweed Renaissance just re-rerealased their mix collection from 1992... its a trip way back on the memory machine.

Sean Rhodes, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

I've been waiting years for a Digweed mix

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:08 (twenty years ago)

oh no, "pleasant"

I will now present Disco Nihilist's One Point Plan For Saving Dance Music:

#1 If you cannot start a riot then you cannot be involved in dance music on a commerical level.

if the dance music industry adopts my One Point quality control policy everything will be peachy keen.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 08:11 (twenty years ago)

I can't wait til Ronan gets here.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

dog, have you seriously never heard of digweed? he's been around since like '92! i think he used to have silly hair.

Miles Finch, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 10:22 (twenty years ago)

And he played himself, with some seriously wooden acting. as a big-name DJ in a cheesy US rave movie (can't remember the name at the moment, was it called 'Groove?')

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 10:59 (twenty years ago)

mjt - songs don't start riots, derrick may starts riots.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

don't you hate that house with a female vocal? where the fuck did that mad idea come from? and don't get me started on black guys making house

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

I'm joking by the way.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

Derrick May started riots? Fuckin cool.

Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

if by 'start a riot' you mean 'storm off in a sulk because people do not enjoy his music on as many levels as he does' then maybe

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

i'm joking too. kisses Derrick!

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

You're only saying that because you're scared of Derrick, Carl and Dave coming round your house and ramraiding your front room.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

John Digweed was born on the south coast where he still lives. Started out as a proper 80s soul boy, but got his DJ-ing big break playing at Renaisance in it's Mansfield period. Met up with Sasha to make up a prog house dream team. They spent a lot of the late 90s/ early 00s having a celebrated night at Twilo in NY. Digweed also ran (runs?) Bedrock on Thursdays at Heaven, London and on Fridays in Brighton.

Dog Latin, if you like that Fabric one try Sasha and Digweed's Communication or some of Digweed's mixes for Global Underground. He's a big favourite of GUs.

Sasha apparently makes a mean roast chicken.

Digweed's brother is a champion clay pigeon shooter.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

'Course I've heard of Digweed but he was at his height when I was mostly ignorant of house/trance etc so I don't really know enough about him.

I like Disco Nihilist's one point plan.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

xpost - thanks anna!

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

"prog house dream team" -- not a phrase you hear that often.

Miles Finch, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

this is a very good mix, but the mayer track seems out of place and tokenistic.

i like mike's plan.

it's tricky (disco stu), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

ooh, that does look good. the jeff mills choice is one my favorites.

it's tricky (disco stu), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)
