I think I like individual Willie Nelson songs more, but there was just *something* about Johnny Cash.

Willie. Just for "Crazy" alone. Johnny Cash is always singing about Johnny Cash, which is fine. But Willie Nelson? Well, sometimes he's singing about me.

of course I love Johnny, but Willie is unassailable.

Oooooooooooh... good one. We'll give it to Cash, as some of Nelson's stuff puts me to sleep.

TS: "Chicken in Black" vs. "To All the Girls I've Loved Before"

Pot or pills? Texas or Tennessee? Laid-back swing or hopped-up boogie? I love 'em both, but it's Willie for me. Although Cash is surely the more badass, mythological persona, Willie's musical gifts tip the scales. Having seen 'em both in concert a few times, there's just nothing like the unbelievable affection that people have for Willie Nelson.

TS: "Chicken in Black" vs. "To All the Girls I've Loved Before"
When you put it like that, of course it's "Chicken in Black." One stupid and great tune.
I've always been a bit atheist about Johnny Cash. He's good, he's an icon, yeah, but I don't enjoy him all that much. I like the novelty aspect of Johnny Cash, like "Chicken in Black" and "Shrimpin' Sailin'" and all that. And really, I feel somewhat the same about Willie. It's really an acquired taste, his singing, and yeah, you do always know it's him, he's a great stylist. But again, it just doesn't do all that much for me, altho the high points are pretty great. Still, Willie gets my nod just because of his guitar playing--he has great instincts, and he's somewhat jazzlike in the way he fucks around with time and the structure of the songs, the way at his best he does try to do something different. In that sense, I think Willie is a real musician and Johnny Cash was kind of a folk singer or something, the musical curiosity just isn't there in Johnny Cash. Neither one is close to being at the top for me when it comes to country-like music. Haggard, Faron Young, George Jones, Frizzell, many others, all seem more interesting. But both Cash and Nelson were very cool indeed.
