mylo's record is damn boring - there is no way this could ever destroy anything much less rock & roll

it should have been called 'drug rock & roll until it cant take any more and is forced to drift off to sleep that turns into a lifelong coma out of necessity'.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

the title track is stealing the thunder of Medicine 8's superior 'Even The Beetles, Even The Monkeys' somewhat

Is that the one that actually goes "De-Stroy" ?

If so, that one is way better. Still not great, but better.

Is that the one that actually goes "De-Stroy" ?

er, no

"Pink Floyd
Led Zeppelin
Billy Squire
the Rolling Stones
even The Beatles
even The Monkees"

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

It would also steal the thunder from Negativland's "Michael Jackson"...

...except that...

...it's...

...BETTER.

There. Said it.

Daft Punk Lite

wtin, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

it's a bit boring in places, true

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

Middle section, from Drop The Pressure through to the second Muscle Cars = grebt
Beginning and end = rub

Even The Beetles... is kind of dull I think. Worst moment on that Medicine8 record for me.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

re the Med. 8 track i like the oomph of the break and the background 303-alike a lot. 'Rock Music Pays Off' better overall tho.

as for Mylo, 'Muscle Cars' is still one of my favourite tracks on the album. and is 'I Need Love' available on any of the singles?

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

it's just stars on 45 with beatbox knobs on innit.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

I preferred him when he was in the Tweenies ho ho.

harveyw (harveyw), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

i like the tune with the kim carnes sample. "in my arms" i think.

it's tricky (disco stu), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

"in my arms" is my ringtone

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

The Reynolds Girls failed, what chance does he have?

KeithW (kmw), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

four months pass...
So why IS this album called 'Destroy Rock n' Roll'?

What is the implication behind that title? Given the eloquent, glossy but overly staid, uncomplicated and functional (the intention behind each track seems all too clear - 'this is the one you dance and ba happy to', 'this is the one you lie on the grass bank and watch clouds to', 'this is the one where you PRETEND you're in some crazy nightmare scenario') nature of the music?

In this way is there some curious parallel with a certain brand of rock n' roll? Cliff Richard? I say this only because there's a certain innocence behind Mylo's output, the idea being to make a contemporary work that fulfils specific purposes regimentally (dancing, social ambience and ideas of what would be popular and what is reasonable to compromise to achieve this) that reminds me of how 50s rock n' roll may have been seen (but others saw it as a frightful menace i suppose) - or is this totally off base?

revival inspired by: Is popular music less experimental than it used to be?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 09:37 (twenty years ago)

haha, i forgot about this thread. what do dance fans/specialists think of this albumi wonder....

ppp, Wednesday, 29 June 2005 09:38 (twenty years ago)

Well, I think Stevem's right. It is far too planned to be true in parts, and there are some downright dull sample choices (and hell, this is all just 'In My Arms'). I really liked the EPs, although in retrospect, the 'Destroy Rock'N'Roll' 7" is less than the sum of its parts. The album is so hit and miss that you just end up seeking solace in some of his remixes. Sometimes, I wonder if he's just going for an idea of dance-pop as opposed to his own or just ignoring the notions and going for it. I still have no idea where his commercial success came from and I also remember vividly "the night no one danced to 'Drop The Pressure' before it was famous".

It's weird to go so MOR after being the guy that started the original Mylo thread, but that's life.

Negativa, True Believer (Sheryl Crow in a Britney costume) (Barima), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 10:15 (twenty years ago)

I hope it's not true about him wanting to release the mash-up of 'Drop The Pressure' and 'Dr Beat' as the next single. It's too predictable and really not that great.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

i might investigate his remixes cos i liked the kylie one a lot and thought the album would be more of that style. but it wasnt.

ppp, Wednesday, 29 June 2005 10:59 (twenty years ago)

What are the good remixes? Didn't like the Annie one.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

Any Winehouse - Pumps
Aloud - Rocky XIII
Master H - Thirteen

So why IS this album called 'Destroy Rock n' Roll'?
Erm, I thought it was from the sample used in the title from some wacko preacher calling on the power of Almighty God to destroy "David Boowey" and "Cindy Looper"!!!!! From what I've seen of his live stuff, Mylo's already pretty much a rock band anyway!!!!

Old Fart!!! (oldfart_sd), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

some wacko preacher calling on the power of Almighty God to destroy "David Boowey" and "Cindy Looper"

isn't it a P.T.O. campaigner or similar saying this? There's no evangelical aspect to it unless I didn't pay enough attention.

That title track doesn't really have a message beyond 'Rock n' roll is great - and I think of acid house as rock n' roll not some opposing force despite the aesthetic differences!' though does it? So it's just pretty weak irony?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

PTA that should be.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

Destroy Weak Irony.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

I thought it was just from the sample by the activist. I'm sure there's a meta meaning as well. Several of the tracks on the record are exciting while the rest of it is highly listenable.
