i'm making a mix of '96-'99 tracks and i need more hip-hop/r&b in there. for some reason it seems to die off for a few years before the resurgence of eminem/outkast/missy around 2000. apart from timbaland (ie missy, ginuwine, aaliyah), aquemini, destinys child and slim shady, what were the best rap tracks from this period?

wow, maybe this thread explains jurassic 5 and the 'back to the old skool' feel of the times.

trudat. only truly great songs on this thread so far:

wu-tang: 'reunited'
noreaga: 'superthug'
lauryn hill: 'doo wop' (and 'everything is everything')
nas: 'street dreams'
2pac: 'california love'

this was not such a great time for hip hop, partly of course because of the shootings.

we must not forget, though:

odb: 'got your money'
outkast: 'aquemini'
tlc: 'no scrubs'

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

'street dreams' is rubbish. what's the appeal?

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

it's just glossy as fuck. it is a precursor of bling bling. puffy, mase, lox, all that nouveau riche overmuch stuf that followed. it's one of the first instances of the bling we got to know so well later on.

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

i think 'Lucini' is a much better example of that, plus Biggie in general maybe. 'Nas Is Like' is great tho, was that 2000?

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Xzibit 'Paparazzi'
