Read somewhere that Pete Stride(must be late 40s) of The Lurkers 'fame' still lives with his mam.

Syd Barret?

J Mascis wore this on his badge back at his height of popularity, I think. He still might!

donut christ (donut), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

i believe glenn danzig is the all-time champion of this.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

i believe glenn danzig is the all-time champion of this.

He did have to, after all, ask her if he could out and kill that night.

"brains for every single meal, why can't we have some guts?"

I think I read that Brett Daniels of Spoon and Ted Leo were living (not together obv) with their folks a few years ago in order to make ends meet. I may be wrong.

darin (darin), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

Well if you tour a lot, this has gotta be pretty convenient.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

I did mean to say... it's one thing if you've never lived anywhere else BUT with your mother, and you are now in your 40s; but as far a temporary situation gies, there's nothing to be embarrassed about...

I would prefer NOT to do it not out of "embarrassment" but because my mom and I would get on each other's nerves after three days.

donut christ (donut), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

Diamond David Lee Roth still lives in his dad's Pasadena home when he's in SoCal. Not sure if dad still lives there or not.

Flash (cowboytrance), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

He's probably moved out by now but there's a great interview with S0n1c B00m in his childhood room.

Snappy (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

Didn't Britney have her mom move into the mansion? Does that count?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

x-post, indeed true of ted leo

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

Old Skull! Were they, like, about 8 at their peak?

Who was backing those little pests?
And how do you know they weren't squatting?

Jessie the Drunk Dutch Mountain Dog (Jessie the Drunk Dutch Mountai), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

Didn't Britney have her mom move into the mansion? Does that count?

No it doesn't count, because SHE DOESN'T PLAY ROCK!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

The Syd Barrett thing isn't true. I think he lives in his mother's house which led to the rumor that he lives with his mother. But she's actually dead and he lives on his own.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

I don't think Mascis lives with his parents any longer - his dad died about 12 years ago. He may live with a sister? It's been a long time since I was out that way.

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Re: Old Skull - one of their dads was in the Tar Babies, a pretty good SST band of the era. I forget who it is, but seriously, theres an ILMer who used to actually be in Old Skull. Do a search!

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

Roky Erikson?

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

Did Mascis just, erm, duh, 'Forget to move out'

For the record Pete Stride from the Lurkers had always lived with his mum. He was also proud at never having had a 'proper job'. Ever.
I would have thought that been in The Lurkers since 77/78 constitutes real graft.

Jessie the Drunk Dutch Mountain Dog (Jessie the Drunk Dutch Mountai), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

i believe glenn danzig is the all-time champion of this.

not unless she moved into his house in l.a.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

There's that scene in Decline of Western Civilization II: the Metal Years where Chris Holmes from WASP is floating in the pool and I think yelling at his mom? So I assume he lives at home.

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

I loved the Tar Babies. From Madison? They started out Hardcore didn't they and then ended up sort of funkrockgonewronginaniceway. Certainly better than the Chile Peppers anyhow.

Jessie the Drunk Dutch Mountain Dog (Jessie the Drunk Dutch Mountai), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

Does no one else here read Texas Monthly? There is a long, interesting article about Daniel Johnston, who lives in his parents' house outside Houston, in the February 2005 issue. Apparently this is a hallmark of crazy geniuses (cf. Roky Erikson and Syd Barret, assuming Messrs. McCombs and The Drunk Dutch Mountain Dog have their facts straight).

drfunk (DrFunktronic), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

What about Syd Barret?

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

The drummer for Husker Du lived with his mom

Mike D (nullnvoid), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

Greg Norton? Not anymore he doesn't. He's a married restauranteur now.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

naw, greg's the moustachioed bassist. he IS a restauranteur though

mat, Wednesday, 2 February 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

I read this thread title as "Famous or Not so Famous Rock Critics Who Live At Home With Their Mothers"

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

Gygax: methinks the answer there would be "Most."

Didn't Fatlip (once of the Pharcyde) always rap about living at home with his moms? Doesn't he still? And furthermore, isn't he just cool as hell in the new Spike Jonze Ludacris video?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

Did Mascis just, erm, duh, 'Forget to move out'

I thought he lived in New York now (and both of his parents died awhile back, like in the early 1990s)

Vic Funk, Wednesday, 2 February 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

The drummer for Husker Du lived with his mom

Grant Hart may still live with his mom. One of my friends (who runs a music store in the Twin Cities) tells an apocryphal story of the day Grant Hart's mom came into his store to buy guitar picks on the eve of a trip, by her son, to perform at the Experience Music Project in Seattle.

subgenius (subgenius), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

Gary Wilson!

El Janko (JasonD), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 03:22 (twenty years ago)

No it doesn't count, because [Britney] DOESN'T PLAY ROCK!

not even when she played "i love rock and roll"?

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 03:30 (twenty years ago)

Warn Defever from HNIA lives in his mum's house. His folks live elsewhere tho.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 06:03 (twenty years ago)

yup, Grant still lives with family members.

Ron Asheton's mom lives at his house(or vice versa, i guess).

Paul Westerberg was still living at home for a while even after the Replacements got signed to Sire.

Kingfish MuffMiner 2049er (Kingfish), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 07:42 (twenty years ago)

Bryn Jones lived with his parents up till his death..... I gave my condolences to his mother the day after he died - she had no idea that so many people knew her son's music!

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 09:34 (twenty years ago)

Thirstin Howl III

-- walter kranz (kranz_walte...), February 1st, 2005.

I wonder how long it took him to realize she'd died.

Marx Cuban, Wednesday, 2 February 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

Ron Asheton lives in his mum's house. I've been there and everything. He was going to give me a haircut, but we all got too drunk.

The Phantom of the Operating System (kate), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

"For the record Pete Stride from the Lurkers had always lived with his mum. He was also proud at never having had a 'proper job'. Ever.
I would have thought that been in The Lurkers since 77/78 constitutes real graft."

Well, he did have a couple of years off in '80-'82 (apart from a couple of gruelling weeks recording The New Guitars album with John Plain of The Boys, of course) and again between '84 and '87.

No wonder he felt he had to pack it all in 5 or 6 years ago - the hectic pace must have been getting too much for him.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

Syd did live in the basement while his mother lived...she passed sometime in the 80's i believe...his sister lives somewhere nearby and looks in on him and his gardening.
