Uptempo Rock Songs That Actually Reached The Top Ten Of The Billboard Hot 100 In The Last Ten Years

And make sure you actually consult Allmusic or somewhere before listing something. Don't think "oh gee, that HAD to make the top 10" cuz you're probably wrong. AND NO POWER BALLADS like "With Arms Wide Open" or "My Immortal". NO SLUMPY SHUFFLES like "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" or "How You Remind Me." And to make it REALLY tough, NO RAPPING. I'm talking straightforward rock songs. Like this one:

Jimmy Eat World - The Middle #5 (2002)

Do we count "Bring Me To Life"? That hit #5 and I can't figure out if it qualifies as a power ballad or not.

This thread was inspired by Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" which is at #16 and rising.

actually, maybe we should count slumpy shuffles (I mean "Smells Like Teen Spirit" could have been called one I'm guessing). But NO POWER BALLADS.

Blink-182 - All the Small Things #6 (1999)

"three small words" by josie and the pussycats went top ten at my house.

dan (dan), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

"Sk8er Boi" peaked at #10

great thread idea, btw

Santana's "Smooth" should fit in here.

And since someone's gonna say it eventually anyway, "Hey Ya" was an uptempo rock song.

(both were #1, obv.)

Is "Since U Been Gone" really a rock song?

Huk-L, Wednesday, 2 February 2005 05:29 (twenty years ago)

If it is, then surely Pink's "Get This Party Started"!

Huk-L, Wednesday, 2 February 2005 05:31 (twenty years ago)

"Since U Been Gone" is a lot more guitar-driven and traditionally rock-sounding than "Get This Party Started".

"Stacey's Mom", which i almost hear in a Waffle House the other day. How about "Devil's Haircut". Also isn't "In the Meantime" by Spacehog less than ten years old?

Im waiting for a Kriss Kross revival.

"Devil's Haircut" top ten? I don't recall being Supreme Overlord of the Universe at any point recently.

What's this place, Biblevania? (natepatrin), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 07:07 (twenty years ago)

("Devil's Haircut" peaked at 97. "Loser" was 10 in '94.)

Did Limp Bizkit - Rollin' make no1?

Raymondo, Wednesday, 2 February 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

"Rollin'" missed the Top 40; AFAIK, Limp Bizkit have never had a Top 40 hit.

"Stacy's Mom" topped out at #21.

Pink - good call. Along with "Get This Party Started," "Just Like a Pill" and "Don't Let Me Get Me" went Top 10.

Gin Blossoms went Top 10 with "Follow You Down" in 1995.

How did Vertigo do? #1 in Britain, obviously. It's a tradition for the lead single for a U2 album to do that.

Crackity (Crackity Jones), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Pink is pushing it.

"You Oughta Know" - #7
"When I Come Around" - #2
"Black Hole Sun" - #9
"Mr. Jones" - #2
"Jeremy" - #7 (peaked in 1995? must have been that re-release thing)

I'm not even sure if any of these count. This is hard.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 2 February 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

Okay, except for "Jeremy," those are all "Top 40 Mainstream" charts. So I fukt up. But these are actually all Hot 100...

Chumbawamba, "Tubthumping" - #6
Sugar Ray, "Every Morning" - #3
Marcy Playground, "Sex And Candy" - #8
Metallica, "Until It Sleeps" - #10

"Bittersweet Symphony" was #12, damnit.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 2 February 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

"sex and candy" wasn't exactly uptempo.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Well it's not exactly a ballad.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 2 February 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

Third Eye Blind, "Semi-Charmed Life" - #4
Third Eye Blind, "Jumper" - #5
Matchbox 20, "Unwell" - #5
Eagle Eye Cherry, "Save Tonight" - #5
Three Doors Down, "Kryptonite" - #3
Blues Traveler, "Runaround" - #8
Spin Doctors, "Two Princes" - #7
