Weezer fan age demographic.. not born before 1971?

Partially inspired by a comment by Ned on another forum...

I don't know a single person my age or older who is a Weezer fan. I'm 33...(born in 1971)

Mind you, this statement is not intended to be an insult by any means! And when I say "fan", I mean "owns all or most Weezer albums, goes to their shows whenever possible, talks positively about them all the time", etc. not just someone who "doesn't mind" Weezer, like me... but also not required to be a Rivers stalker either.

But I really strained to think of any friends of mine older than me who are fans, and I just couldn't think of any... anywhere in the world. And while I'm not mr. A-1 Social, I do have quite a bit of friends in town and in other cities.

I'm curious if anyone my age or older experiences the same thing. Weezer are the only band where the age demographic for fans is about as solid as it gets as far as an "earliest year of birth being 1971" phenomenon goes.

(The premise here is intended to be stupid and vague on my part, I admit, with the hope that less stupid discussion will follow.)

I'd never call myself a fan, but I bought their first record when it came out and saw them open for Lush (or was it the other way around?) In any case, I was born in 1967.

No no, this was a comment Ned made as he's a NATO delegate. That type of forum. Weezer have been talked about as a global security threat, specifically Rivers' groupies.

OK, I guess I could say the same about the Locust, too... myself excepted. I remember my friend who runs a record store in Costa Mesa CA who told me, as I was buying the a single of theirs, "You know, you're the only guy I know who buys The Locust stuff that's old enough to be a Locust fan's dad"

Hey, you can lower the bar to 1981 for Dashboard Confessional fans.

I think this is true, and it also holds for Modest Mouse at least until this year (actually, until this year, I didn't know a single modest mouse fan born before 1976)

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

Well, Modest Mouse have been known since Weezer though.. but I know a lot of people in their late 30s and 40s who like the Mouse. Then again, I live in Seattle, which is probably a different ball game for MM fans altogether.

The oldest Weezer fan I know is thirty. Most are much younger.

I was born in 1970 and I like them OK, Pinkerton anyway. Oh, and I own a few Modest Mouse albums, too. Of course, I live in Portland, OR where they've been pretty popular for 7 years or so.

I just have their cd with "Buddy Holly" and "Undone-the Sweater song", and I'm an old fart--born in 1961. I doubt anyone I work with at my dayjob likes Weezer or even knows of Weezer(well maybe one guy), and I'm guessing most of the parents of the other kids in my 10 year-old son's class don't listen to Weezer either. But I think my old college pals know the group, and the folks at the alt-weekly I contribute to probably know them and sneer at 'em.

The =W= are still very much under the radar in the more -ugh- mature indie rock circles, with the exception of The Blue Album I suppose. I don't really know why that is. I just love the songs. (and I'm a few years older than Rivers!)

The oldest Weezer fan that I know is my former boss -- a 41-year-old Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force. I claim responsibility for his fandom; I gave him a Weezer mix CD last summer, and he really liked it. I think he had a hard time getting into the Pinkerton songs at first, but they grew on him. (I was born in '74 and I like Weezer, so I come close to the "born in '71" demographic.)

I'm 38 and I love 'em. Have all their cd albums (and the DVD). Seen 'em live, too.
