Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 3 February 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

been meaning to check this out. now that there's a thread, i'll head promptly o'er to slsk and report black.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Thursday, 3 February 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

i got it in my folder if you need.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 3 February 2005 02:19 (twenty years ago)

i just bought this and it has completely blown my mind. i have listened to 'no hits' about 20 times today. i will report back when i have put my head together again.

stirmonster, Thursday, 3 February 2005 02:20 (twenty years ago)

don't run our hearts around made me want to get in a pontiac firebird and party at the moontower.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 3 February 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

haha, i used to know one of them! nice enough sludge, but i don't quite follow the hype. who knew warmed-over Zeppelin would be so hot? i keep meaning to see them live.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 3 February 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

they're opening for the Mountain Goats in Seattle on Sat. Feb 12th.. Daaaamn.

donut christ (donut), Thursday, 3 February 2005 02:24 (twenty years ago)

derrick, i hope you're 21+.. you need to come down and join the party.

donut christ (donut), Thursday, 3 February 2005 02:25 (twenty years ago)

Who knows, there might be a Black Mountain Goats encore..

donut christ (donut), Thursday, 3 February 2005 02:25 (twenty years ago)

This album is pretty great. "Faulty Times" blows my mind. Let's smoke some kelp, yeah. Channeling Neil Young circa Buffalo Springfield.

toothy philanthropist, Thursday, 3 February 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

Or sometimes when the girl sings, Head East. I mean that in a good way.

toothy philanthropist, Thursday, 3 February 2005 02:46 (twenty years ago)

i wish i could, DC, but i've got a fairly important workshop all day on the 13th. try to talk j0hn into heading north for me, will you?

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 3 February 2005 02:51 (twenty years ago)

Slept on my living room floor a couple of months ago. They are very nice people and their live show is extremely good -- loud and mesmeric, you know. It's nice to see psych interpreted in this way. There aren't a lot of bands doing something so specific.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Thursday, 3 February 2005 02:56 (twenty years ago)

that's a fair way to put it. it is specific, and well done at that.

i saw one of the very last Jerk With A Bomb shows, before they morphed into Black Mountain. it was good stuff; they opened for Destroyer, the 'This Night' lineup.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 3 February 2005 05:43 (twenty years ago)

was it at richard's on richard's, derrick?

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Thursday, 3 February 2005 06:58 (twenty years ago)

A great record, best of 2005 so far, and thankfully wildly acclaimed over here. Can't wait to see them, for they have clearly been chosen. I'm surprised they haven't been mentioned here already.

snotty moore, Thursday, 3 February 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

I like it. The press release compared them to Meat Loaf, which made me giggle

DJ Mencap0))), Thursday, 3 February 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

over here (in the uk), i haven't read a thing about them. as far as i'm aware there has been no hype. i just picked it up because someone in the record shop had put a sticker on the record saying 'sounds like a 21st century blue cheer'. that was enough for me.

stirmonster, Thursday, 3 February 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

check out their release last year when they were called the Pink Mountaintops. very good sex-obsessed krautrock.

Pete W (peterw), Thursday, 3 February 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

yup this cd is blowing my mind.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 3 February 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

sure was at richards. were you there? as i recall, it was the very same day that the war in iraq officially started. it was a strange mood.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 3 February 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

for those who have heard all three, rank the following.

oneida
black mountain
dead meadow

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 3 February 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

I've only heard a little Black Mountain, and I've never seen them live,
so I would put them Oneida>Dead Meadow>Black Mountain.
It's true that Dead Meadow's albums leave a lot to be desired, but I think they are pretty hot live. I don't get all the comparisons to Blue Cheer with Black Mountain, at all. I don't think they sound anywhere near as unhinged as anything on OutsideInside or Vincebus Eruptom. Zeppelin seems like a much more apt comparison.

Trip Maker (Sean Witzman), Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

i agree. they don't sound think they sound like blue cheer but the comparison did make me buy it.

stirmonster, Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

Weird - I never thought of Pink Mountaintops as Krautrock. I love that album though. Is the lead singer of Black Mountain the same Canned Heat-sounding guy that sings on the Pink Mountaintops album?

Chuckling at the Tomkat's Marquee (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

"black mountain">"secret wars">"shivering king and others"

don't know other oneida albums. "secret wars" is good but a bit too indulgent for my tastes to make for habitual listening. "black mountatin" is completely fat-free, just a really good rock album. the first dead meadow album is too sludgy for me to get that into.

rank&file, Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

Indulgence is my habitual thing.

Trip Maker (Sean Witzman), Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

Oneida>Dead Meadow>Black Mountain

DJ Mencap0))), Thursday, 3 February 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

yep, ben, PM and BM are two sides of the same Steven McBean coin. the assembled coterie is different, but the nucleus is the same.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 3 February 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

dead meadow sucks

i love this black mountain record though - psyched to hear the split with Destroyer!!

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Thursday, 3 February 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was there. I don't remember much about the show, except that Destroyer didn't play enough songs off Streethawk: A Seduction.

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Friday, 4 February 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

Both Pink Mountaintops and Black Mountaina are great live. Don't miss them.

Also of note: the awesome drummer/keyboard player for Black Mountain plays keyboards for Pink Mountaintops.

jordache, Friday, 4 February 2005 02:42 (twenty years ago)

i've been piss drunk all day...and this motherfucking album helped me through it.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 4 February 2005 02:48 (twenty years ago)

just loaded onto my iPod thingie. what about pink mountaintops? my record store clerk friend isn't keen on it, and he really likes black mountain - is he crazy?

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 4 February 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

yeah, except the music isn't parked on the development's cul de sac.

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Friday, 4 February 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

you got gmail mojo?

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 4 February 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

Wait, are we talking Vincebus Eruptus Blue Cheer? Outsideinside Blue Cheer? Oh! Pleasant Hope Blue Cheer?

the band more or less changed their sound every album in the initial years, ya know.

donut christ (donut), Friday, 4 February 2005 03:15 (twenty years ago)

indeed-y i do! yeah man, if ya want to send it to toxicconvert at gmail dot com that'd rock!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 4 February 2005 03:16 (twenty years ago)

on its way!

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 4 February 2005 03:17 (twenty years ago)

i'll send 2 at a time.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 4 February 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

Awesome! Thanks Chris!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 4 February 2005 03:28 (twenty years ago)

can you send it to me too? it sounds amazing timgroombridge at gmail

tim g, Friday, 4 February 2005 03:29 (twenty years ago)

I can forward it on from Chris once it all arrives. to save him the work.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 4 February 2005 03:31 (twenty years ago)

thanks!

tim g, Friday, 4 February 2005 03:34 (twenty years ago)

shit I haven't got anything yet. Have you tried it yet, Chris? Not bugging you, just trying to see if their is a problem with my acct or something...

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 4 February 2005 04:00 (twenty years ago)

fucking soulseek needs to start working again like right now

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Friday, 4 February 2005 04:07 (twenty years ago)

do they not have mp3s on their label website? (JetJaguwar?)

donut christ (donut), Friday, 4 February 2005 04:15 (twenty years ago)

Jagjaguwar, actually. MP3s here: http://www.jagjaguwar.com/mp3/index.htm

My sideburns just grew an two inches listening to this album.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Friday, 4 February 2005 04:35 (twenty years ago)

um I just did a control-F 'find' on this thread for the word "Sabbath", and the first time it appears is Hurlothrumbo's post at 1:56 PM TODAY. The second and final time it appears is in Singbad's post. So I don't know who these imaginary "people" are that singbad is addressing, but, you know, thanks anyway.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

wait, are you kidding, or are that lost that you'd control-F "Sabbath"?

singbad, Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

I'm trying to figure out who the fuck the "people" are in this thread that mentioned the band Black Sabbath. There were none. Nobody mentioned them except the post immediately preceding yours.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i don't know either. i was agreeing with the other guy just before me. ask him? or just snap at me again, i don't mind

singbad, Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

since you seem out of sorts, whoever you are, i read the whole thing for you. the guy who started it said sludge, 70s style. i guess most people think of sabbath when they read that? are you disagreeing, or just fooling?

singbad, Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

ha ha, I just wrote heavy/sludgy/sabbathy cause they all seem to go together, and cause I've heard lots of people compare Black Mountain to sabbath in conversations -- sorry to be so inaccurate in my assessments; please change "sabbathy" to "zeppelinly" in my post(s) for greater thread-accuracy, and I'll stand by it. Sheesh.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

xpost.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

i say stick with it. i've only ever heard people compare them to sabbath. when i first got it my roommate asked me if it was some sabbath album he hadn't heard. and they decided to call themselves black mountain, not led mountain.

singbad, Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

nah, it's just that the tone of these posts seemed to be one of "you guys are totally reading this band WRONG." When in fact I think there as many references to Head East in this thread than any super-heavy stoner groups. It just bugs me when a group of ILM regulars gets pigeonholed by a googler / lurker.

so as Joe Elliott sang, baby, I'm not f-f-f-fooling -- whoever YOU are, lurker. (or wait, is this 'live from khazakstan' slightly revising his opinion?)

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

my apologies if my tone upset you, milord. i meant no disrespect to the peers of the realm or to the men and woman of the black mountain.

singbad, Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

hey, I'm not a lurker -- I'm just an infrequent but kinda longtime poster (and one who defends classic rock with some regularity). Also, I wasn't trying to correct anyone on this thread as such -- just noting that I'm someone who wasn't that into the album before I saw them a bunch live, because I had been sold a bill of zeppelin/sabbath goods. The live show helped me figure out some aspects of the record that hadn't really come across before (the self-assured simplicity of the rhythm section being a huge one for me) that made me really love it.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

dude, Hurlothrumbo, I know who you are! I wasn't talking to you, I was talking to singbad.

yeah, I dunno, I knew nothing about this band before this thread, and then subsequently acquiring the record. In fact this thread is the only place I've ever had contact with anyone about this record, scout's honor! So I've honestly never heard Sabbath comparisons. And yeah, point being, I agree with you guys in that respect -- the record doesn't sound like them at all.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 24 March 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

Black Mountain have about as much in common with Black Sabbath as they do with the band Mountain.

In name only.

drewo (drewo), Thursday, 24 March 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

reading the thread again I see I'm in agreement with the other guy who noticed the Neil Young similarities. I buy the Head East comparison too. i still don't hear a lick of zeppelin.

singbad, Thursday, 24 March 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

yoo people are insane. and stormy and roger should know better. i didn't understand why they were touring with coldplay till i heard the rekkerd. now it makes perfect sense. big yawnzzzzz...

New album's pretty decent. Fewer immediate highs on first listen, but nothing that I just don't like at all. We'll see…

Lightning Dust is SUPERAWESOME too (Amber & Josh sideproject)

Dr. Superman, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 18:20 (eighteen years ago)

Cool to see this thread revived and to find out there's a new album and tour - I just threw this (2005 rekkid) on the turntable last night on a whim and really enjoyed it - glad I didn't get rid of it, cause a bunch of my friends really slag that release...

BlackIronPrison, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

make new friends

Dr. Superman, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

Friends who ROCK.

(Does Lightning Dust have new stuff out? And man, the new album is all watermarked and shit… Which means I have to be careful when I rip it to listen on my mp3 player).

I eat cannibals, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 21:56 (eighteen years ago)

i thought this thread would be about the US literary movement :P

Just got offed, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 22:00 (eighteen years ago)

I liked last one, but mind-blowing? I ask you: Are you experienced? Have you ever been experienced?

Mark Rich@rdson, Thursday, 27 September 2007 01:54 (eighteen years ago)

Lightning Dust just has the one album that came out in the spring. And probably that'll be it for a while since BM has the ol' new album thing happening.

Dr. Superman, Thursday, 27 September 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)

wow, what an influential place. they counted john cage, willem de kooning, and buckminster fuller among their faculty, spawned the black mountain poets, staged the first-ever "happenings" (in the THIRTIES)...

...wait, we are talking about black mountain college, right?

Lawrence the Looter, Friday, 28 September 2007 01:51 (eighteen years ago)

little late there...

Dr. Superman, Friday, 28 September 2007 03:02 (eighteen years ago)

Sabbath meets… some '70s prog with a chick singer that I can't think of off the top of my head.

I eat cannibals, Friday, 28 September 2007 20:42 (eighteen years ago)

some of their tunes remind me of a more psychedelic version of songs by songs: ohia or electric magnolia co. which is weird, because i don't really like either of those groups. mostly on the songs with male/female harmonizing, like 'voices'

6335, Friday, 28 September 2007 21:12 (eighteen years ago)

they were great on friday. their new stuff definitely has a sabbath vibe to some of it. 'druganaut' ruled, i wished they would have played the extended version and then extended that out to 15 minutes. cave mountain singers were pretty good, too

6335, Monday, 1 October 2007 06:39 (eighteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

Pretty good last night. That chick is more a warbler live, and she looks lost when the rest of the band's rockin' without her.

Still, pretty fucking good. We did get the 15 minute Druganaut, and a pretty sweet version of Don't Run Our Hearts Around.

Live, the Cream Clapton tone of the guitar comes through a lot more, and there's more emphasis on the moog, which I like.

I eat cannibals, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 17:51 (seventeen years ago)

The first track off the new album is a bina fide banger

W4LTER, Thursday, 13 December 2007 09:55 (seventeen years ago)

Fantastic performance in Nottingham last Thursday in advance of their appearance at ATP; they really blew me away. They had no new product to push, save for a tour-only 12" containing two tracks that won't be on the new album (plus a voucher giving you a password for downloads of the same tracks). There's also a free download of "Tyrant" from the new album on their website.

So they got some of their gear stolen while they were on tour and now a bunch of local bands here are holding a benefit gig for them. Gotta wonder why Black Mountain don't just play a benefit concert for themselves!

because their gear got stolen
