Classic or Dud: The genre of "Rock n Roll"?

I'm just curious people's take on this. It seems like the idea of rock has been bastardized to include just about everything. And if thats the case, rock largely SUCKS... if you get my line of reasoning

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Thursday, 3 February 2005 03:32 (twenty years ago)

Stop this. Just fuckoff with this, really, Rock is alive and well and roughly manhandling your mother.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 3 February 2005 03:34 (twenty years ago)

I guess I don't get the question, but if it's along the lines of theorising that the actual genre category is too broad, then i guess that's why there's a whole heap of sub categories like, you know, shoegaze, grindcore, power pop, hard rock and so on. Better?

PiersT, Thursday, 3 February 2005 03:49 (twenty years ago)

Yeah--Alex is right. Rock's never been better. Go to the record store! What a delight! So many treasures! Punk rock is alive and well! Metal? Hot! Join a street team! Add a turntablist! Go wild! Anything goes!

usualchannels, Thursday, 3 February 2005 03:50 (twenty years ago)

I don't know if I understand the question.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 3 February 2005 04:10 (twenty years ago)

DON'T GET YOUR LINE OF REASONING.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 3 February 2005 04:14 (twenty years ago)

if your line of reasoning is that rock sucks because kelly clarkson or ashlee simpson suck, then you're wrong. if your line of reasoning is that rock sucks because the arcade fire suck, then it's possible you are in fact right, but only if you agree that, by the same line of reasoning, the following things also suck: hip-hop, punk, soul, R&B, jazz, literature, cinema, art, food, clothes and liquid refreshments.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 3 February 2005 04:24 (twenty years ago)

liquid blows

heidy- ho, Thursday, 3 February 2005 04:25 (twenty years ago)

I thought this would be about music that is self- consciously "rock'n'roll" and has songs with the word "rock" in the title. That genre of music is classic, I guess.

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Thursday, 3 February 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

Rock is classic, but the classic rock radio format is dud.

What's this place, Biblevania? (natepatrin), Thursday, 3 February 2005 06:30 (twenty years ago)

Unless they EXPAND THE PLAYLIST F'CHRISSAKE.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 3 February 2005 06:36 (twenty years ago)

Oh ha.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 3 February 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

Rock n Roll as defined by the 50s originators Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, Bo Diddley, Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, etc is CLASSIC beyond belief.

Snappy (sexyDancer), Thursday, 3 February 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

I second the classicness of Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bo Diddley, Everly Brothers and Buddy Holly.
Elvis Presley would only qualify for Classic status if you removed all the excess fluff, cruft, hackwork and shlock from his recorded output.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 3 February 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

as if chuck ("my ding a ling") berry, bo (ever heard him rap? or play reggae?) diddley, and all those other guys were completely free of fluff, cruft, hackwork and schlock in their careers! even buddy holly managed to get some schlock in, and he only lived to age 22!

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 3 February 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

haha i like nate's "rock is classic, but classic rock is dud."

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 3 February 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

I suppose you mean there are many shoddy corners of rock subgenres which suck?

monia.l (monia.l), Thursday, 3 February 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

I maintain there is a difference between "Rock n Roll" and "Rock".

Snappy (sexyDancer), Thursday, 3 February 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

but Elvis has entire box sets made up of nothing but fluff and shlock. Elvis' average stuff was much worse than Bo Diddley or Chuck Berry at their worst.
Elvis' Post-Sun work

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 3 February 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

You are really smashing the icons today, aren't you Custos?

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 3 February 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

Of course, i'm talking Sun-era Elvis only. 50s only, people! Stay on target. We're talking about Rock n Roll as a genre, not specific artists' decline.

Snappy (sexyDancer), Thursday, 3 February 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

Rock and Rock'n'Roll are two different things.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 3 February 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

Where is mark sinker when we need him?

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 3 February 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

custos: i like all those guys, but i'd say elvis actually sustained his greatness for significantly longer than any of 'em, with mindbendingly great work in both the '50s and late '60s, and a lot more good work in between than you're giving him credit for. i probably like a lot of what you think is fluff and schlock. every elvis box set that i've heard, and i've heard them from all eras, has quite a bit to recommend it. there IS crap, no doubt. there is a lot of really good stuff too.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 3 February 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

so you're saying the sex pistols aren't rock and roll? you're saying motorhead aren't rock and roll? you're saying the jesus and mary chain aren't rock and roll? i'm saying i disagree with you.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

they all reference "rock n roll" indeed

Snappy (sexyDancer), Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

they all ARE rock and roll.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

they are all "rock" bands incorporating "rock n roll" idioms.

Snappy (sexyDancer), Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

*head explodes*

Elvis needed an editor. Frank Sinatra needed an enema. Preferably with 30.06.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 3 February 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

It's all rock&roll to me.

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 3 February 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

Elvis needed an enema, too. :(

Snappy (sexyDancer), Thursday, 3 February 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

(I'm trying to rewrite the famous PE line about Elvis to comment on this, but I can't do it)

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 3 February 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

(But perhaps Willie Nelson had something to say about it also)

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 3 February 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

Elvis was a hero to most
But he couldn't shit well
So now he's toast.

Snappy (sexyDancer), Thursday, 3 February 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

Straight out constipated th'sucker was,
simple and plain,
Motherfcuk his diet widout grain!

From the Wires: Woman Indicted in Man's Death by Sherry Enema

A woman has been criminally indicted for criminally negligent homicide for causing her husband's death by giving him a sherry enema, a Houston police detective said.

Tammy Jean Warner gave Michael Warner two large bottles of sherry in enema, which raised his blood alcohol to 0.47 percent. Warner was said to have an alcohol problem, and received the wine enema because a throat ailment left him unable to drink.
