Should I feel bad for slagging the Zutons?

Wrote this, but am kind of wondering if I shouldn't've gotten so negative. Especially since this was a concert preview. Being a critic means never having to worry about feeling like a guilty dickhead, only maybe not. Thoughts?

sounds pretty fair to me

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Thursday, 3 February 2005 05:57 (twenty years ago)

I was going mostly by a first impression, which mostly amounted to "they are trying to be anxious and bristly but this sounds soft as all hell" + "man this dude has a lot of lyrics about how his head's messed up" = "FAH"

I downloaded a couple of tracks (mostly because of the band name) and was decidedly underwhelmed. I think I had the rest of the album queued and decided to cancel.
When I used to write concert previews and band interviews, especially for artists I did not like, I used to agonize about the approach. It can be difficult.

I know their manager. I think they're pretty rubbish.

You should have been harder on the sax but apart from that- OTM.

john-paul (john-paul), Thursday, 3 February 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

You should've been way harder. And written the review in blood, on the side of their tour bus.

David Allen (David Allen), Thursday, 3 February 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

you can't be too hard on the zutons.

Miles Finch, Thursday, 3 February 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

Hollyoaks Psychadelia is not a great genre.

that song in the jeans ad isn't so hot. did they change that jeans ad to include one of their songs or am i dreaming? i don't remember that ad - with the dog chasing the young hottie - having that music in it when i first saw it. and i don't remember them actually showing the album and telling me to buy it at the end of the jeans ad either.

Nah, I thought that was the best write up in yesterday's issue.

all new bands beginning with a 'the' end ending with a 's' deserve to be slagged.

You did the right thing Nate, bang on the money - those lousy limey dole scroungers deserve the ire of every right thinking person on this planet.

Righteous.

I read this thread's title as "Should I feel bad for shagging the Zutons?" I was all ready to say "Yes. Very, very, very bad."

Couple hours. Why?

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Friday, 4 February 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

I bet the response will be a passive aggresive insult like "thought so."

Any other guesses?

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 4 February 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

i personally don't see how the Zutons could inspire bile (some of those album tracks are pleasant little early '70s kinks-type jams) but hey

miccio (miccio), Friday, 4 February 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

maybe the press release is really exaggerated or something, i dunno

miccio (miccio), Friday, 4 February 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

Maybe they're just boring as fuck (Lola vs. the Powerman and the Convoluted Album Title fan speaking here)

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Friday, 4 February 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

I don't think the Zutons deserve more than two hours of mulling over, to be honest.

two years pass...

Wow, "Valerie" really is even worse when it's performed by Winehouse and the ever-lovable Mark Ronson.

nine months pass...

The Zutons' set at T4 On The Beach descended into chaos after the group were booed by the crowd.

Frontman Dave McCabe and his bandmates failed to impress the audience with their performances of 'Valerie' and latest single 'Always Right Behind You'.

An onlooker told The Mirror: "The crowd were heckling and jeering because they were in such a state. Then the band started hurling drumsticks at them - it wasn't very friendly."

McCabe recently admitted that he fears the band is suffering a backlash. Their third album You Can Do Anything had a frosty reception from critics when it was released last month.

Dave said: "I wanted it to go to No.1 and sell millions. I'm gutted. Maybe it's just our time to fall out of favour. But we'll just keep gigging. That's what we love doing the most."

blueski, Monday, 21 July 2008 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

Aw, poor Dave. These always seemed like a likeable bunch with a few decent songs. Not worthy of the success they've had, but fair fucks to them.

Zutons dropped by Sony BMG?
Tuesday, January 13 2009, 10:42 GMT

By Alex Fletcher, Entertainment Reporter

Rex Features
Liverpool indie band The Zutons have been dropped by Sony BMG, say reports.

According to Teletext, the band parted ways with the label over Christmas. The Zutons were signed to Deltasonic, which is part-owned by Sony.

The Zutons' third studio album You Can Do Anything charted at number six last year. The group's first single off the record, 'Always Right Behind You', peaked at 26, but follow-up 'What's Your Problem' failed to break the top 40.

Previous top 20 singles from the group include 'Pressure Point', 'Don't Ever (Think Too Much)', 'Why Won't You Give Me Your Love' and 'Valerie'.
