Eleven DJs playing seven 7-inch sides is the nifty concept behind this
benefit for local nonprofit United Communities Southeast Philadelphia.
With so many different people taking a turn behind the tables, what you'll hear
over the course of the night is anyone's guess. So just come for the big
raffle of hipster-approved prizes donated by Spaceboy Records and
respected indie labels like Anti-, Sub Pop, Beggars/Matador, Plexifilm,
Domino and DimMak. Folks spinning include Andrew Jeffrey Wright and Thom
Lessner of Space1026, Sara Sherr and Maria Tessa Sciarrino of Plain
Parade, Luis Mayo of Yarn Mask, Joey Sweeney of Philebrity, Kristaps
Kreslins, Jesse Pearson of Vice Magazine, Brendan Newnam, and Laris
Kreslins of Arthur and Sound Collector. Only seven DJs were originally
scheduled, in keeping with the number-seven theme, but more kept coming on
board. As Laris Kreslins, who helped organize the night, says, "I think
it's always good to have a backup." All proceeds go toward United
Communities' mission of community stability, quality education and
economic advancement. (Doug Wallen, PW)

ABOUT UNITED COMMUNITIES SOUTHEAST PHILADELPHIA

United Communities mission is to serve to empower individuals, families
and neighborhoods of Southeast Philadelphia in the achievement of
social and economic advancement. Our goal is to support the development
of and well-being of children, youth and families; to enhance community
stability through the preservation and development of affordable
housing; and to strengthen and build community leadership to enhance
the ability of residents to develop strong, healthy communities. United
Communities Southeast Philadelphia (UCSP) has a long and rich tradition
of service to children, adults and families residing in Southeast
Philadelphia. UCSP was established in 1969 through the merger of three
settlement houses that date back to 1847. For the past 33 years, UCSP
has carried out the original settlement mission of promotion of
educational and economic advancement of individuals and families within
its host neighbhorhoods. Today, the mission is reflected in three
agency priorities: 1) support the development and well being of
children, youth and families; 2) enhance household and community
stability through the preservation and development of affordable
housing; and 3) strengthen and build community leadership.

In 1996, UCSP established its own Community Development Corporation,
now a separately incorporated but closely linked organization.
Together, UCSP and the CDC provide services and community driven
activities that address the needs, further the strengths, and reinforce
community spirit for more than 5,000 children, adults and families
through a wide array of services.

These services include: After school and summer programs for youth;
housing counseling and homeowner education; community greening; energy
assistance; pre-school programming; housing rehabilitation; computer
literacy for children and adults; prevention programs for teenage
youth; out-of-school youth educational/job readiness program; evening
recreational activities for adults; and case management and family
services

United Communities Southeast Philadelphia (UCSP) is a non-profit,
multi-purpose settlement house with a long and rich tradition of
service to children, adults and families residing in Southeast
Philadelphia. UCSP was established in 1969 through the merger of three
settlement houses that date back to 1847.
