Everyone's invited, it doesn't matter if you're going to the show. Let's meet up for drinks and food and stuff at the Tribeca Tavern on 247 W Broadway around 8 PM.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

For a second I'm all "When did you move to LA?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

Fuck you LA and NY people for rubbing SF's nose in this.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

Just kidding. I hope it's great!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

I'll rub all your noses in it cuz I saw her last night in Toronto (you corny jingoist fuxx)

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

So did she put on a good show?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

When is she playing NYC?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

Saturday night.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

I'll be at the KF-LA pretty early tonight.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

you going to the afterparty spencer?

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 3 February 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Sneak me in, I'm underage

David Allen (David Allen), Thursday, 3 February 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I'll definitely be at Beauty Bar afterwards (maybe Tokio too, next door). Unless I hear about a party that she'll more likely attend! (hotel lobby etc). If you have any trouble at the Beauty Bar door, tell them "I think I'm on Steve's or Frankie's list, I RSVP'd on email".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 3 February 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

So who's onboard for the show tonite?

Dude, are you a 15 year old asian chick? (jingleberries), Thursday, 3 February 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

A friend said she's staying at the standard, didn't know what she was up to afterwards though... anything going on there tonight? i'd have to ask which one it was though. i guess they're about equidistant.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 3 February 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

The Sunset one is much much closer to the show.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 3 February 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

to be honest i thought they'd put her up at a nicer hotel. but i guess she won't be here long enough to do much press, so...

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 3 February 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

So anyone got a spare ticket to the NY show they want to part with?

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 3 February 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

Well... LA is now sold out... there goes that.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 3 February 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

she was good, but by no means great. not that i expected much from her first 'proper' show.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 3 February 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

What was the format of the show - were the songs played separately, or was it one long DJ mix with the songs broken into little chunks?

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Thursday, 3 February 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

If I hear her songs played loud, then it will be a rousing success.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 3 February 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

the songs were played separately. most were the arular versions, although a few ("amazon", "uraqt", a few others) were inna pft stylee.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 3 February 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

yeah i hear you spencer. i had a corker of a night but in retrospect the venue's sound was frustrating as hell. the only speakers were at the front of the stage, and even those weren't loud enough.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 3 February 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

oh and she did a baile funk bit too. that killed. as did the last minute of "galang".

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 3 February 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

cool, for all KF-LA's faults (and that's mainly other people talking), Junior Boys had some amazing BASS going on. Hopefully, the PA setup will be similar.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 3 February 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

Oh, good to hear about "URAQT."

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Thursday, 3 February 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

I didnt have any complaints at the MF Doom show awhile back. I'll be bringing my earplugs.

Dude, are you a 15 year old asian chick? (jingleberries), Thursday, 3 February 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

Junior Boys had some amazing BASS going on

That's for goddamn sure. Dammit I want them to tour again now.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 February 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

given that she got what she got out of toronto under the circumstances, i have no doubt nyc and la will absolutely go off.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 3 February 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

don't worry Alex in SF. We'll get ours yet!

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 3 February 2005 22:40 (twenty years ago)

hey spencer... just got a note from steve aoki saying he couldn't take any more after party rsvp's... do they actually have a list or is the 'i rsvp'd...' line the magic word?

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 3 February 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure what that means... Bring your ticket stub and just be nice and namedrop. I don't usually have a problem (i.e. it's rarely a mob scene unless there's a really famous DJ). Also, if Beauty Bar is too crowded, go to Tokio next door for a drink and check if there's a line again.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 3 February 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

ah, therein lies the problem. no ticket stub. sold out.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 4 February 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

Is this the same m.i.a that sings langylangylangylang, razor blades langylanyglangylang, purple haze langylangylangylang or words to that effect? If so, why would she be sold out, the song and the video are both monstrously hideous. Or indeed hideously monstrous.

dmun, Friday, 4 February 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

Were any of you NYC people planning on going to the "free afterparty"?

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Friday, 4 February 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

ah, therein lies the problem. no ticket stub. sold out.

Oh, then just go early, like before 10:30. I doubt there'll be any problem. Place doesn't get hopping til 11:30.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 4 February 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

Greg, quick FYI -- will be home later at 6 pm or so, though it seems like you'll just be doing the afterparty thing! Shall sign on to AIM when I return regardless.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 February 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

Chuckling at the Tomkat's Marquee (Ben Boyer), Friday, 4 February 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

ugh i dont have tix but im going to the afterparty

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 4 February 2005 09:08 (twenty years ago)

i had tickets and I'm home already. show was too short, felt obligatory, the beats should have been more amped and sped up for the setting but it was very fun anyway. Had as much fun dancing to the dj afterwards tho, I just needed to move.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Friday, 4 February 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

I was impressed with the LA crowd actually giving a shit for a change. At the very least the people standing near me were into it..

Dude, are you a 15 year old asian chick? (jingleberries), Friday, 4 February 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

I danced more than I ever have at a show.

mucho, Friday, 4 February 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

Agreed. Who the fuck was the DJ that went on before Diplo? He was awful. (apologies if anyone knows this dude or is this dude)

Dude, are you a 15 year old asian chick? (jingleberries), Friday, 4 February 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

I got really sick last night and had to leave even before she came on :(

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 4 February 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

God, Spencer, that sucks! What happened? Did you get some kind of stomach flu?

That D.J. is a huge scenester -- he either runs or helps run that Poloroid Scene/Cobra Snake thing, I think. Or at least he appears in a ton of the pictures (ahem, depressing inadvertant confession).
I didn't even notice what he was playing, though I thought I heard "Passing Me By" by Pharcyde and a Faint song.

Diplo is pretty amazing as a D.J., I think. The part where he brought in the "Sweet Dreams" sample had people going apeshit. Everyone was jumping up and down and you could feel the parquet floor buckling. It was very cool.
Same thing at the end of "Galang" with the huge chant. It was super loud and cool.

I didn't think the show was too short at all; I thought it was the perfect length, though she seemed to maybe get tired towards the end. And it kind of killed the momentum when she was like "I kind of don't want to do this song, let's take it out of the set," but the beat had started, and the backup singer was already getting into it, so Diplo shrugged and M.I.A. just sort of went into it.

I was psyched she played "URAQT." Love that one.

I don't have Arular, just the mixtape -- for those that know the album, were most of the beats that were non-mixtape last night the ones that are on the proper full-length?

Further points for that being, without a doubt, the most diverse concert audience I have seen in years. Clubs are one thing, but to get that range of a crowd at a live music show is something else entirely.

I thought it was an amazing show.

Chuckling at the Tomkat's Marquee (Ben Boyer), Friday, 4 February 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

I loved when Diplo threw on Pun Tun Tun. Shit took me back.

mucho, Friday, 4 February 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

ugh i dont have tix but im going to the afterparty

C0L1N B--KETT, Friday, 4 February 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

Food poisoning...

As for the first DJ, it was either Steve (asian guy) or Frankie (little guy with glasses). They're ok at Cinespace, but yeah, their parties are better than their music.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 4 February 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

Sounds like a great time was had, Ben. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 February 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

I almost had a heart attack when my roomate who mostly listens to movie soundtracks was like 'Oh youre going to see MIA tonight? I heard shes the future of music on NPR.'

I thought the crowd was a pretty interesting mix, too. There was a couple drunk girls who were furiously dancing next to these two hip hop heads who seemed totally annoyed by it.

Most of the beats were from Arular.. Im not a expert but Id say 3-4 songs were from the mixtape/other mixes.

My beef was with the little guy with glasses. Some of the songs he played were ok, but dude, its not like were at youre fucking apartment. Mix the shit together..

Dude, are you a 15 year old asian chick? (jingleberries), Friday, 4 February 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

'Oh youre going to see MIA tonight? I heard shes the future of music on NPR.'

Hahaha!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 4 February 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

"Some of the songs he played were ok, but dude, its not like were at youre fucking apartment." OTMFM

His decision to play "rapper's delight" was particularly inspired

tremendoid (tremendoid), Friday, 4 February 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

He actually plays lots of good stuff at hipster parties, like Khia. And Steve's been playing MIA for a while now.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 4 February 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

I'm gonna catch her at Bristol with Roots Manuva i think. Any other UK guys gonna go to the London one though?

does this need a thread of its own possibly?

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 4 February 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

I thought the LA show was great. And I agree with the comments above, the opening DJ seemed ridiculous compared to Diplo. You hear the Love Cats/Drop it like its Hot mix? Like WHOA!

Oh yeah, M.I.A. was amazing. man, is she hot!

Antonio DePietro, Friday, 4 February 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

anybody have any pics or video from this show?

logi, Friday, 4 February 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Diplo dropped "The Percolator" during the M.I.A. set. So awesome.

Scott Warner (thream), Saturday, 5 February 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

anyone have any extra tix to the ny show? Damn da damn...

gregor vox (Gregor Vox), Saturday, 5 February 2005 06:34 (twenty years ago)

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 5 February 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

I'm a fuck for not properly thanking matt and eppy properly for getting me in.
Thank you.
