What's wrong with "Los Angeles/ Wild Gift" ?

I can't remember the source, whether John Doe said it at a gig or if it was on his now-defunct website .. but he called the LA/Wild Gift compilation a horrible trainwreck....

I never noticed that the quality was bad or anything .. but I don't usually listen for that kind of thing....

I'm no audiophile...but it just doesn't sound good at all. It's murky and dull, necessitating more extreme crankage than otherwise necessary.

Even my crappy ears noticed the improvement in sound quality from the LA/WG disc to the Rhino reissues.

i believe the correct modern rockcrit response to the question asked here is, "there's no rhythm section and neither of the singers can sing." but i like both of these albums quite a bit, and i like the raggedy way john and exene's voices go (and sometimes don't go) together, and i like the little bits of rockabilly flash, and "the once over twice" is one of my all-time favorite songs, and come to think of it i'm not sure i've ever heard the cd two-fer so i have no answer at all to the actual question, k thx bye.

"there's no rhythm section and neither of the singers can sing."

I have the twofer and I never knew their was a problem with the sound-I thought it was the aesthetic they were going for.

To follow up fcc's comments- I love the story about when they asked Billy Zoom why he smiled when he was playing and he said something about seeing all the hairband guitar heroes making pained faces while playing basically easy stuff and wanting to do the opposite.

I own it, and I don't hear anything particularly bad about the sound - no worse than any of the other early X discs (pre-Rhino).

One of these days I'll get around to picking up their first four in reissued/remastered form, but I really don't want all the bonus tracks, so it's gonna be awhile.

I originally owned 'Los Angeles' as a kid on a shitty CASSETTE that I plucked out one of those $3.99 bins of old major label product they had at places like Musicland, because I was a Doors fan and I had heard that Ray Manzarek produced it. So when that 2fer CD came out it seemed like a massive IMPROVEMENT to me, I dunno. I love having both records together, don't really care about the bonus tracks either.
