I nominate Fleetwood Mac, "Tusk." This song kicks butt. The weighty brass of the marching band, dudes.

George Smith, Friday, 4 February 2005 06:39 (twenty years ago)

So, let me just get this straight. We've just called Fleetwood Mac's Tusk heavy metal. Is this what has really occured? I just want to be sure I understand.

Frankie Teardrop on the college radio airwaves at 3 a.m.

And look, if anyone can please point me to a band that sounds like heavy metal Kraftwerk, I really really do want to hear this band. Please. Thanks.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Friday, 4 February 2005 07:13 (twenty years ago)

heavy metal Kraftwerk

You might like Hansel & Gretyl or Panzer AG.

George Smith, Friday, 4 February 2005 07:15 (twenty years ago)

And look, if anyone can please point me to a band that sounds like heavy metal Kraftwerk, I really really do want to hear this band. Please. Thanks.

There was a French band a number of years back called Treponem Pal (French for "syphillis," I believe), who did a skronktastic cover of "Radioactivity"). The rest of their material was untroubled by melody.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 4 February 2005 07:19 (twenty years ago)

TEENA MARIE!!

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Friday, 4 February 2005 08:07 (twenty years ago)

Killabunnies, by Moloko.

And I always referred to Mountain Goats as being a metal band with acoustic guitars, but that may be stupid.

Divine Styler feat. Styles of Beyond: Microphenia

Rubberoom: Born
(the heaviest rap track ever?)

Pharoah Sanders: Red Black and Green

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 4 February 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

The ABBA song I would have chosen is "Watch Out".

Pangolino again, Friday, 4 February 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

Jethro Tull - anything off Crest of a Knave.

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Friday, 4 February 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

wolf eyes is pretty metal tho.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 4 February 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, they are. Olson swinging the mace on stage last year, the general headbanging, etc. Eh, it was worth a shot to see if anybody would call me out on that. David Banner, though...

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Friday, 4 February 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

plus dilloway playing the guitar!!!

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 4 February 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

any choral recording of the 'dies irae'

Ian John50n (orion), Friday, 4 February 2005 22:35 (twenty years ago)

the theme to Requiem for a Dream.
And all crunk

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 4 February 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

actually the Banner track I'd pick is "Might Getcha" ... it's even got the same gothic bell sound as on the track "Black Sabbath".

choral stuff is a good idea .. I was thinking of mentioning that Ligeti stuff from 2001. Or even his "Continuum." For some reason I keep wanting to mention stuff that's just really fast over stuff that's kinda doom-y. like Flatt & Scruggs - "Foggy Mountain Breakdown.".

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 4 February 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

bimble: have you heard ... what are they called, mogwai's pals, really obvious name ... klingklang, that's it? they take the notion of "heavy metal kraftwerk" far too literally and therefore are nowhere near as good as they should be, but: worth a listen, all the same.

i'm glad this thread is moving onto "classical" stuff: let's be chucking prokofiev's "the montagues and the capulets" in there too. \m/ \m/

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 4 February 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

Spinal Tap- Big Bottom

Lady Lazarus, Saturday, 5 February 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

Everything by Vitalic ever.

Renegade and Static - "We'll delete the weak"
Delta 9 - "Never stop that revolution"
MOP - "Ante up"
Lil Wyte - "I sho will"

Jacob (Jacob), Saturday, 5 February 2005 03:57 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I'm thinking NWA's "Straight Outta Compton" and "Dopeman" are both kick-ass heavy in every sense, but metal? I'm having a difficult time hearing these tracks as being characteristically "heavy metal by a non-metal band" but hey, I agree they're totally rockin' me right now. I think Tusk is hard to beat in this category actually - with the whole rhythmic tribal heaviness and primal plea of "Don’t say that you love me! Just tell me that you want me!" Not really in this vein, but I''ll add:

Daft Punk - "Aerodynamic"
Bad Seeds - "Mercy Seat"

PiersT, Sunday, 6 February 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

**The rest of their material was untroubled by melody.**

Alex, any music editor who passes you over is a fucking fool.

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Sunday, 6 February 2005 01:23 (twenty years ago)

If you're going to be chucking Prokofiev in there, you can have

Muse - 'Space Dementia'

Same thing.

Si Carter (Si Carter), Sunday, 6 February 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

Bjork- Army of Me

Earl Nash (earlnash), Sunday, 6 February 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

The whole "Mu-sick and Hour Mess-age" album bu Public Enemy is so goddamn heavy. It is their best album (and most underrated).

charleston charge (chaki), Monday, 7 February 2005 05:57 (twenty years ago)

all of Oval's Commers
Franz Schubert - "Erwartung"

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 7 February 2005 06:10 (twenty years ago)

I woulda done "Tragedy"

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

Little Eva, "The Loco-Motion"

That saxophone groan-drone is way-heavy! And the incessantly clanging percussion is in the tradition of "Hell's Bells" and "Black Sabbath", except that it actually drives the song rather than just looming in the background. Definitely heavier than Grand Funk's (not bad) cover version.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 7 February 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

that's a good one!

i also nominate jr. walker's "shotgun."

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

...Orff totally gay?

Hmm, I motion "Dies irae" from Mozart's Requiem, then.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

"carmina burana" is not heavy, it's Oliver Stone heavy i.e. so overplayed as "heavy" it's not heavy any more.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

Shit, I meant "Erlkonig" not "Erwartung". The latter is by Schoenberg, of course.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 7 February 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

Original Concept - Knowledge Me

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 February 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

Surely 'Helter Skelter' by The Beatles.
