Because I Got High - Afroman

Frogman Henry, Friday, 4 February 2005 05:24 (twenty years ago)

If memory serves, any good song sounds better high.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 4 February 2005 05:25 (twenty years ago)

Scud Mountain Boys' Massachusetts is unimpeachable high. (So's "The Sounds of Silence".) Post-Saucerful Pink Floyd, on the other hand, is a good thing to play if you want to come down HARD.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 4 February 2005 05:31 (twenty years ago)

"Drop It Like It's Hot"

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 4 February 2005 05:36 (twenty years ago)

Oooooooooooooooooooooooh.

I wonder what "Grindin'" is like. On drugs. In bed.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 4 February 2005 05:43 (twenty years ago)

You mean like on an airplane or something?

Black Sabbath - "Wheels of Confusion" -- the first time I ever heard Vol. 4 I had just gotten back from Hash Bash in Ann Arbor, blown out of my mind, and had picked this up at the Discount at State and Liberty. I just sat there on the floor Indian-style, listening to Iommi bludgeon that ridiculously simple one-chord riff, listening to the best rhythm section in the history of rock music, and listening to Ozzy lament his childhood and the toys he used to play with, and man ... THEN that whole fast middle section speeds things up (as per)(think they even gave this one its own name right? "Everything Comes and Goes"?) with those pinging shooting-star guitar overdubs... I saw god.

also I recommend "The Sprawl" by Sonic Youth.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 4 February 2005 05:48 (twenty years ago)

Since I recently decided that Fripp + Eno - "Swastika Girls" played over any MBV song was the greatest thing ever, it's probably safe to say anything. I tend to dig lo-fi shit for some reason too.

sleep (sleep), Friday, 4 February 2005 05:50 (twenty years ago)

a few weeks ago, i was really stoned and put on Incredible String Band. i was so freaked out by it i decided i didn't like them anymore :(

The Ballad of El Janko (JasonD), Friday, 4 February 2005 05:53 (twenty years ago)

Seriously, though - here's the tracklist for a psychedelic (loosely defined) mix created in the pass-it-on style of the ilmixor

1 Animal Collective, "We Tigers" 2:43
2 Oneida "Caesar's Column" 4:39
3 Latyrx (Lateef the Truthspeaker and Lyrics Born), "Latyrx" 5:48
4 Scorn, "White Irises Blind" 6:07
5 Sun City Girls, "Chameleon 2000" 10:02
6 Maserati "Closer Than You Know How" 6:16
7 The Deviants "I'm Coming Home" 5:59
8 Flipper "If I Can't Be Drunk" 9:01
9 The Shoulders "Odyssey" 4:47
10 Larry Young "Saudia" 4:31
11 Lush "Tiny Smiles" 4:26
12 Jefferson Airplane "Fat Angel" 9:05
13 Joy Zipper "Dosed and Became Invisible" 4:16
14 Lee 'Scratch' Perry and Mad Professor "Dub Those Crazy Baldheads" 6:41
15 DJ Vadim and Motion Man "Till Sun's In Your Eye" 4:39
16 The Flaming Lips "Strychnine/Peace, Love and Understanding" 3:59
17 Loud Creme "Motorcycles in the Sky" 8:49
18 IsIDORE "Ghosting" 4:15

Austin (Austin), Friday, 4 February 2005 05:53 (twenty years ago)

OH MAN... "If I Can't Be Drunk..." is one of my favorite songs.

But really, My Mold Collection by SNFU sounds pretty sweet on pot.

By 'high', you mean pot, right?

Mike Dixn (Mike Dixon), Friday, 4 February 2005 05:58 (twenty years ago)

I still say the best drug/music combo is LSD/Monster Magnet-Tab..25. I can't handle trippin' right now though.

Old Metallica is still my fave for drinkin'.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Friday, 4 February 2005 06:00 (twenty years ago)

which isb record, jaxon?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 4 February 2005 06:00 (twenty years ago)

In college, we had some formulation along the lines of: "Alcohol makes bad songs sound good. Pot makes good songs sound amazing."

That said, I usually find (found) that the more complex/layered something is the better it sounds stoned. I used to like listening to Dj Shadow, Isotope 217, Tortoise, Miles Davis (particularly Silent Way, Filles De Kilamanjaro), and Coltrane Live at the Village Vanguard after taking a few massive bong hits, if you know what I'm saying.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 4 February 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, by high I mean weed...

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Friday, 4 February 2005 06:07 (twenty years ago)

I am quite surprised no one has mentioned Spiritualized or Spacemen 3. Most of the people who got me into drugs (but not really music) were really into those guys.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Friday, 4 February 2005 06:10 (twenty years ago)

I do recall really enjoying the following though:

GYBE - "Moya"
Disco Inferno - D.I. Go Pop
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew, On The Corner
Talking Heads - Remain in Light
Boredoms - Pop Tatari, aaaand everything else

sleep (sleep), Friday, 4 February 2005 06:10 (twenty years ago)

Johnny - just thank your lucky stars no one's mentioned the G******* D*** yet.

Austin (Austin), Friday, 4 February 2005 06:12 (twenty years ago)

The Growing Dong?

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Friday, 4 February 2005 06:13 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I had to wait a couple years for the pot smoke to clear before I realized that the GD actually DO have a few decent songs.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 4 February 2005 06:14 (twenty years ago)

Yeah. And FUCK W********* P****!!

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Friday, 4 February 2005 06:15 (twenty years ago)

"The Chronic" really does sound awesome while high.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 4 February 2005 06:16 (twenty years ago)

which isb record, jaxon?

The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter. it just weirded me out. i've enjoyed it in the past, maybe i just wasn't in the mood for it.

The Ballad of El Janko (JasonD), Friday, 4 February 2005 06:17 (twenty years ago)

I gather that discussing The S***** C***** I******* is out of the question then?

But you must at least have a little love for M****** M***** & W***.

I'm not too fond of B*** F**** and the F********* myself.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 4 February 2005 06:17 (twenty years ago)

Chron 2001 is perfect ridin' in the car - blazin'.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Friday, 4 February 2005 06:19 (twenty years ago)

hahaha

i saw sci once when they came to my school. i could have sworn that what their fingers were doing on the instruments did not match the sounds that i was hearing. it was really kind of distracting.

they were opening for mm&w. mm&w was much more enjoyable.

sleep (sleep), Friday, 4 February 2005 06:20 (twenty years ago)

I think it's a hard and fast rule that MM&W are ALWAYS more enjoyable than the band they play with. It's a smart booking gimmick.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 4 February 2005 06:23 (twenty years ago)

2001 was the first hip-hop album (Mannie Fresh had already produced some good songs here and there though) I'd ever heard that sounded sooooo fuckin' good and high-figh if you know what I mean.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Friday, 4 February 2005 06:23 (twenty years ago)

My SCI story is almost too classic: Freshman year I was dragged to The Wetlands to hear them by my slightly hippie-ish friend and his VERY hippie roommate, Doug. Doug got very very stoned and a bit drunk at the show, but of course he was the only one who knew how to drive stickshift, and therefore the only one that could drive his GREEN VW BUS (the "Shaggin' Wagon") home. Somewhere on the way to the turnpike, he nearly crashed into a highway divider (going a whopping 30 miles an hour), and would have had I not yelled his name over and over again.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 4 February 2005 06:27 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, and any old dub is obviously megaclassic in this category. Scientist, Dr. Alimantado, and of course Lee ...... "SCRATCH" ...... Perry among others.

xpost - ahahah. perfect.

sleep (sleep), Friday, 4 February 2005 06:35 (twenty years ago)

The Four Tops' "Bernadette" and the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds album are good to start. I'm partial to Jefferson Airplane's After Bathing at Baxter's but I realize most aren't. Also, very airy stuff like the Free Design.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Friday, 4 February 2005 06:36 (twenty years ago)

And speaking of dubby shit, Tosca - Suzuki is both satisfying and really chill. "Doris Dub" is the absolute fucking jam.

sleep (sleep), Friday, 4 February 2005 06:39 (twenty years ago)

I have never done drugs,I'll never do drugs,I have zero tolerance for drugs, drugs are for losers, get high on life."

Todd Rundgren's "International Feel."

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Friday, 4 February 2005 06:51 (twenty years ago)

someone mentioned it above, but last night it was Spiritualized.

also, Three 6 Mafia - Sippin' On Some Syrup

one time gaffled 'em up, Friday, 4 February 2005 07:11 (twenty years ago)

Sonic Youth "I'm Insane"
Grand Funk Railroad "People, Let's Stop the War"

f-a-b-o-l-o-u-s (adamwest), Friday, 4 February 2005 08:34 (twenty years ago)

Listening to "Discovery" while high literally brought tears to my eyes, it's so intense to listen to on surround sound really loud while lit.

Ian John50n (orion), Saturday, 5 February 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

Lovebug, this would have been April (see I know the month even because it was hash bash!) of 1990, my senior year of high school when I probably was smoking the most pot. I don't touch the stuff anymore though. Yeah for a chain, that store was pretty great. It's where Iggy used to work, right?? I went there a lot over the years. My copy of Hysteria I bought there when it came out and that was, what, 1987? And I still have it! I think I had just gotten my first CD player. When did you work there?

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 5 February 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

last night came home kinda drunk, wife and i pull out the pipe and start watching tv, i notice she's asleep on the couch so i pull out the headphones and put on John Martyn's "Inside Out" and am in aural bliss. next thing i know i woke up because the glass of wine i had in my hand had spilled all over me and the floor :(

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Saturday, 5 February 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

x-post

I worked there 79-80, and at the smaller Discount on S. University in 77-78. Now, could you fetch me my cane young feller?

The fucking "Hash Bash" was always prime shoplifting time. And for me at that point, sorta like being an alcoholic on New Years Eve. Buncha amateurs...

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Sunday, 6 February 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

The Who - Tommy
Led Zeppelin - III
Neu! - 2
Fiery Funaces - Blueberry Boat
Stevie Wonder - Journey Through the Secret Life of Plants

Just to name a few... I find that epic albums with a purpose are good to listen to high.

Michel Gondry's Directors Series is GREAT to watch high!

Jaxon, the same thing has happened to me more times than I'd like to remember. The record freakout, and the wine glass. No good.

Cameron Octigan, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 02:51 (eighteen years ago)

everything sounds better and looks better if you're on good drugs and it's good.

the table is the table, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 04:08 (eighteen years ago)

I recently had a great time listening to Aladdin Sane, particularly "Cracked Actor".

But yeah, as many have said before and will say again, just about anything sounds better.

Z S, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 04:41 (eighteen years ago)

Patrick Cowley-Seahunt
The Beat Club- Security
Candido- Thousand Finger Man

I used to listen to Radioactivity, Second Annual Report, and Heathen Earth in a row on long walks A LOT under the influence. The best "memory" I have was breaking curfew during the huge east coast/midwest power outage in 2003. I threw on my Sennheiser headphones and took a long walk to KW and TG in complete darkness.

PHIL COLLINGS AND PETER GABRIELE

max, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 06:24 (eighteen years ago)

u fools don't know to listen to the bob marley live in saucelito mp3 that got lost from the itnernet when napster shut down when you're stoned off drugs-- or if you're 14 or 15 those three good songs off the roots live album, or the bach violin sonatas & partitas as played w.o. gay accompaniment by nathan milstein. real trippy

tho if u get hi enough recorded music is just gae bcz u cld imagine much better songz-- that's y jimi hendrix didn't play guitar that much.

luriqua, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 06:33 (eighteen years ago)

OOIOO broke my mind into tiny tiny pieces one time.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 06:37 (eighteen years ago)

lol: u recommended art tatum & called sum1 else 'dweeb' u jazz fucker. his fluttery meandering makes the stoned & hardened laugh in mild amusement, such as how prince paul laughed at carwars as though it were a cute child.

also, that mike patton track off 'burner' by odd nosdam bcz the drums & melody are 1.61803399 on a scale of flawlessness & there4 will rupture ur sutures & spontaneously erect the internal acoustic meatus

luriqua, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 06:46 (eighteen years ago)

i also now say Satwa. god this album is so fucking beautiful.

the table is the table, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 14:07 (eighteen years ago)

The term is "jazz douchebag," homie!

songs you wrote!

Surmounter, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

ha! yeah. my own shit tends to be teh shit when high. then it's back to reality.

andrew m., Wednesday, 28 February 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

lol... well thankfully over the years my songs sound OK when i'm like, not high. but yeah, can't hurt!

Surmounter, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

yesterday morning I got extraordinarily high and listened to, on headphones:

Explosions In The Sky - Catastrophe And The Cure (Four Tet Remix)
Mogwai - Folk Death 95
Mogwai - 2 Rights Make 1 Wrong
Mogwai - Kids Will Be Skeletons
The Cure - Shake Dog Shake

and felt many thrilling euphoric marijuana laced moments.

Sum Fitch, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

i agree with an earlier post that alcohol makes bad music good and pot makes good music better. so it's all a matter of what you like i guess. if you're listening to music on headphones (very advisable when high because of your increased sensitivity to sound and your increased attention to what is going on around you), tunes with a lot of panning is so engaging that you can totally tune out whatever is going on around you. Anything that's really layered will also be unbelievable (hi my bloody valentine!)

in any event, my favorites right now are
Main "Dry Stone Feed"
Panda Bear "Person Pitch"
Loop "The World in Your Eyes"
and Sleep's "Dopesmoker" is a must.
And anything by Can (!!!!), Tony Conrad, Karlheinz Stockhausen
And yeah...anything really.

buyabiznatch, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 21:36 (eighteen years ago)

****************************************
****************************************

NEW QUESTION:

1) What songs are good for smoking to (as opposed to listening to while high)?
1a) What *individual songs* are good for appreciating sober that will still be going on after you've transcended mental states whose latter parts of the song are even better for being stoned than the first?

In regards to (1a), I'd say the most obvious choice for me is Television's "Marquee Moon"

buyabiznatch, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

Mogwai - 2 Rights Make 1 Wrong
Mogwai - Kids Will Be Skeletons

their best 2 songs, then!

1a) "7--> (Boriginal)"

max, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 21:57 (eighteen years ago)

SONG: Madvillain "America's Most Blunted".

nickalicious, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

Album that I REQUIRE you all to listen to next time you are high: Boredoms Vision Creation Newsum (this message intended for the probably very few of you who haven't done this yet).

nickalicious, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

I also recommend:

Funkadelic "Maggot Brain"
Devin the Dude "Sippin Coffee"

nickalicious, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

bohannon, "can you feel it"

8 mins aint long enough.

andrew m., Wednesday, 28 February 2007 22:18 (eighteen years ago)

songs you wrote!

The best is when you've been mixing something for forever and you can't even stand to hear it any more, then you go out for dinner and blaze a gigantic doob before going back into the studio and you listen again and suddenly it's like a brand new song. Then you mix the drums too low on purpose because it sounds more "wiggy" and that's what gets pressed and you're fucked, d'oh.

nickalicious, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

Isis - "Wrists of Kings"
John Coltrane - "Saturn"

As an aside, I once had on "On the Corner / New York Girl / Thinkin' One Thing and Doin' Another / Vote for Miles" (first track on On the Corner) while I was in the process of getting lifted. Bad, bad, bad idea for me. Freaked the fuck out and knocked over the bubbly!

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 1 March 2007 00:10 (eighteen years ago)

The entire self-titled album from Acetone (1997, Vapor Records) was my homegrown epiphany...have bong and couch ready. It works wonders.

Duke-Dubuque, Thursday, 1 March 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha nickalicious i totally hear it.

i love the go out to dinner, spark it, brand new song effect.

Surmounter, Thursday, 1 March 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

One time I was totally out of it high, I think from something that was sprayed with windex and I tried to listen to all my songs but none of them felt right. I skipped through a million songs until I got to Jennifer by Faust which was completely perfect.

filthy dylan, Thursday, 1 March 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

I listened to "7=>boriginal" earlier this evening! now I have smoked more and am listening to this totally weird-ass Amos & Sara cassette that is blowin my mind.
