Vocoder Rap: S/D

My knowledge of electro and stuff is pretty limited but i really do like vocodered robot rap on occasion. I was thinking it'd be fun to list tracks with either raps entirely in vocode or at least key phrases. Coming to mind...

"Scorpio" by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five
"Needle to the Groove" by Mantronix
"Electric Kingdom" by Egyptian Lover

"Egypt, Egypt" too...

Kool G Rap "My Life"

mobb dee, Friday, 4 February 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

uh yeah, everything by Egyptian Lover. My wife has never been able to sell back her copy of "Pyramix" anywhere. I mean, I like it (so does she!) but after twenty minutes of completely identical songs, it gets kinda old. He's no Wesley Willis...

wasnt that dj swamp song vocoder, i think it was called worship the robots but i havent heard it in a while

Uh oh. Nobody managed to point out the fact that Roger Troutman's sound comes from a talkbox, not a vocoder, which is part of why it sounds so un-robot-like and funky.

I would love to post a ton of freestyle and electro songs, but that's pretty much another thread entirely.

bulbs (bulbs), Saturday, 5 February 2005 08:18 (twenty years ago)

well since there's already a the thread for vocoder hip hop maybe this should be more breakdance- or yes electro-oriented stuff. i think i love that lead in "Scorpio" a bit too much.

Adam Bruneau (oliver8bit), Saturday, 5 February 2005 08:41 (twenty years ago)

"Scorpio" was the first thing that came to mind before I clicked to open up the thread. I can't think of any better usage.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 5 February 2005 08:43 (twenty years ago)

i really hope there is. or one at least somewhat on par. there just has to be!!!

i found the full-length LP in a thrift store for 50 cents and that was on it. it got played so much that day i think it drove my roommate criminally insane. not that he commited any crimes. (other than that of not giving it up of course)

> um... talkbox plus keyboard = vocoder, dude!

Um... no, actually. Vocoding is a specific and quite sophisticated technology, which provides results that sound (as CwC noted) distinctively different to those from the relatively crude talkbox system. Which is not to suggest that a vocoder is "better" than a talkbox - but it is a different animal.

By your formula, what does "talkbox plus guitar" equal? Peter Frampton?

A vocoder applies filters a carrier signal with frequencies determined by analysis of the modulator signal. The modulator could be a microphone, drum machine, or any other source. There's a lot of uses for a vocoder besides the beloved breakbeat robot. A talkbox blasts a high volume signal into your mouth. The carrier signal can be anything, but obviously it can only be modulated by the physics of your mouth. It's very idiosyncratic, different from normal singing, and hard to master with a good tone - seriously, try to find anyone close to Roger Troutman. Lugs like Sambora limit it to "waaooohoohwaaooohh" crap. Chromeo is also using a talkbox - the tube going into his mouth is flaunted in the "Needy Girl" video - and the guy does pretty well with it, though it always seems pretty thinned out in the mix.
