Nevermind Courtney Love, have you SEEN how FATNew Order have gotten???

In the latest issue of Q (with Led Zep on the cover.....and tell me, why?), New Order are featured in the "Cash for Questions" section. Words fail me. Also, who is this Phil Cunnigham character? He looks like Mark McKinney from "The Kids in the Hall'" after a rushed lobotomy.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 5 February 2005 06:32 (twenty years ago)

Is this Cunningham Billy Corgan's replacement, or something else?

Dr. Z Indahouse (AaronHz), Saturday, 5 February 2005 06:47 (twenty years ago)

Apparently. He evidently used to be in the band, Marion.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 5 February 2005 06:51 (twenty years ago)

That's a dumbass name for a band.

Dr. Z Indahouse (AaronHz), Saturday, 5 February 2005 06:51 (twenty years ago)

They don't look THAT much bigger (well, except for Barney).

Let me try again:

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 5 February 2005 06:55 (twenty years ago)

Well, yeah, i guess it's just Bernard that's fat. But between him looking fat and Hook -- formerly the personification of cool -- looking like a bit of a jackass (and not in a cool way) and the slackjawed grimace of Mr.Marion (Morris looks alright), I found the whole thing rather jarring.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 5 February 2005 06:59 (twenty years ago)

Here's a less unflattering pic of Mr. Cunnigham....with Lex Luthor...

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 5 February 2005 07:01 (twenty years ago)

oh god barney looks really old. wow.

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 5 February 2005 07:07 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Hook's "thumbs up" pose looks dumb, but had he been standing like Barney then he would have looked OK. I hope I can pull off sneakers, jeans and denim jackets that well when *I'm* nearly 50.

TS: Pretty, airbrushed people making crap music vs. Ugly, old fat people making fabulous music

TS: Pretty, airbrushed people making crap music vs. Ugly, old fat people making fabulous music

Fair enough.....but if the new one is anything like the last one....you might want to re-think that final adjective.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 5 February 2005 08:05 (twenty years ago)

I'm well aware you don't like the last one, Alex. It's not a problem.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Saturday, 5 February 2005 08:06 (twenty years ago)

And incidentally, it's not that I think how fat or awkward-looking they are makes the slightest bit of difference (seen Killing Joke lately? Fat, puffy and balding), but it's just that "back in the day," they were a smart looking little troop (New Order were, i mean).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 5 February 2005 08:11 (twenty years ago)

Sumner went from really young looking to really old. What happened to his thirties and forties?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 5 February 2005 08:40 (twenty years ago)

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Saturday, 5 February 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

Yes, well someone on the neworderonline forum said something to the effect that Hooky looked like an 'overzealous lumberjack' in the photo, which did make me chuckle. But I actually expect a certain amount of goofiness out of Hooky, so it's not much of a shock, really.

Bernard did always seem to come across as one of those guys that would just always look boyish - like Dick Clark or something - you know, the guy that just wouldn't age. But of course, we all age. And maybe it's a testament to their greatness that so many of those now whispering about them are fans too young to even talk.

As for Morris, I was just looking at an old photo of Joy Division the other day, they're backstage at some gig, and he's got his shirt open and he's turned to the side sitting down, and I just thought "you know that really is one of the coolest looking rock stars I've ever seen". I mean, I know cool is a really relative concept and all that jazz, but for god's sake this is my favourite band we're talking about here.

And no, I don't mind if someone reminds me the new album COULD possibly turn out badly. But the nails are mine to bite.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Saturday, 5 February 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

Steve looks exactly the same.

And I thought this cash for questions was supposed to be Ray Davies!

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Saturday, 5 February 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

I think it's kind of cool that they're old-looking. They seem old-looking in a cool way, like Willie Nelson. (Or something.) They're not like Pink Floyd in the late '80s, say. Although Richard Wright has always been pretty cool.

Also, you don't want to become old and still be badass wannabes, like the Rolling Stones--that's definitely worse than this.

The fact Barnee looks like my grandad only makes me like him more. Hook looks like he stll enjoys fun.

Hector Savage, Sunday, 6 February 2005 00:14 (twenty years ago)

Barney's looking just fine, really.

There should not be this fear over age! Then again I intend not to age but merely continue. The rest of you can age. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 February 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

Peter Hook is one of my all time idols, but frankly he's *never* been cool. He's always been a bit off stylistically. I mean, in Joy Division there are pictures of him wearing like a leather biker cap. He's always had the mustache/beard. In the Perfect Kiss video he's wearing a biker jacket. Um, he's responsible for Revenge. He's always done that cock rock, legs splayed bass hero stance. etc etc. Love the man, but not surprised at his new look at all. Also, Barney's been fat for a while now. I think they all look great.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 6 February 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

Peter Hook is one of my all time idols, but frankly he's *never* been cool

Sorry, Spence, but FUCKIN' WRONG!

Peter Hook's Bass....

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 6 February 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

Well, as long as we're talking about how he *looks*, he's always been on the serious edge of uncool. Like I just said, he's one of my all time heroes and his bass playing is the coolest thing ever, but I may have to dig up some pics to prove my point.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 6 February 2005 01:52 (twenty years ago)

Without Peter Hook -- both visually and musically -- New Order would've been fuckin' Orchestral Manouvers in the Goddamn Dark. Peter Hook gave the band an edge and an oomph. He's cool because he didn't fit. He's cool because he throws those ridiculous Billy Duffy poses. He's cool because he would've been better suited in the Stranglers (fact: following the departure of Paul Raven and his brief replacement Andy "Smiths" Rourke, Killing Joke actually recruited Peter Hook to fill in on bass detail). He IS New Order, as far as I'm concerned.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 6 February 2005 02:00 (twenty years ago)

Bernard Sumner looks like a statesman. When he was younger, he looked like Camus. He looks smashing in shorts in the Blue Monday video. He was about as heavy as he is in the photo at the Universal Amphitheatre in the late 80s.

youn, Sunday, 6 February 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

My take on it is - and I was going to say this earlier, but I guess I edited my previous post a little too much - Hooky has always walked the line between cool and being a bit over-the-top. From what I know of his personality, though, he shines through in ways the others don't sometimes. He really puts a lot of energy into it and makes an effort to participate in things and be a good neighbor. He was one of the few people to come out of Debbie Curtis' book unscathed. And from what I understand it's him that has to prod Barney to tour these days. So hey, we have to thank him for that!

The main reason why I wanted to come back to this thread, though, was as a bit of a warning: there is a song on the new album that features lyrics about not being able to stop drinking. I just know someone is going to speculate that these are autobiographical, hence, Bernard's weight gain.

Gasp! Andy Rourke in Killing Joke?!?! The mind boggles.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Sunday, 6 February 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

that's the only pic of New Order I've ever seen where it looks like they'd be really excited about the Super Bowl.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 6 February 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

HOOK TO Q: GO IGGLES!

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 6 February 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

He was about as heavy as he is in the photo at the Universal Amphitheatre in the late 80s.

Hey, I was at that show! And a fine one it was.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 February 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

try not to over-emphasize hooky though, there isn't really a weak point in joy division's musicianship. listening to some of the rough, punky singles stephen's drumming stands out, on the polished studio recordings and some of the live stuff, barney's guitar just sounds so inventive and refreshing... it was really new order where hooky started to become such a defining sound within the band

chris andrews (fraew), Sunday, 6 February 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

[well, 'she's lost control' is a bonus for hooky]

chris andrews (fraew), Sunday, 6 February 2005 23:16 (twenty years ago)

The only middle aged dudes to age even remotely well are Ferry and Bowie, you can't really expect much out of the rest -- that's just the aging process.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Sunday, 6 February 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

Besides, who knows how Curtis would have looked.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 February 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

And nowadays w/out makeup Bowie looks like the Goblin King.

Only Bryan Ferry has aged beautifully.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 6 February 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

Martin Fry's done pretty well, last I checked.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 February 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

You need someone in a band who wants to be a rock star. Without Hooky's regular-bloke attitude the other two come across as bedsitters.

Gillian however is another story. The band sorely needs her.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 6 February 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

Phil Oakey too, now that I think about it. xpost.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 February 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

I saw Martin Fry on Bands Reunited, Ned. He must have had Ferry bite him on the neck, thus joining the ranks of the undead.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 6 February 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

Sumner went from really young looking to really old. What happened to his thirties and forties?

Reminds me of Robert Fripp. He re-retired in '84 looking young and fit, and came back in '91 looking like my granddad's granddad.

Jonathan Z. (Joanthan Z.), Monday, 7 February 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

stephen duffy has aged well. it's kind of upsetting to see barney looking old - he always reminded me of the little boy in 'the tin drum' until now.

debden, Monday, 7 February 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

spencer's right--they look great.

dan (dan), Monday, 7 February 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

Look, I didn't say....THEY'RE FAT.....SO NOW THEY SHOULD BE SLAIN! I was just rather shocked at how the passage of time had evidently had its way with them (as it does with us all).

Alex in NYC...190 lbs (vassifer), Monday, 7 February 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Peter Hook looks awesome now! I want the collective image of my band to be that. All of us will be kind of awkward and give thumbs ups and in every video we'll include a shot of the drummer winking and pointing at the camera with his drum stick in super slow mo, and we'll have water poured on us and wind blowing in our faces

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 7 February 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

And you can kindly fuck off for being so goddamned high school. Having heard and loved the album, all I have to point out is that you're not me and therefore you have no say.

Way to go Ned, you tell 'em! I was disappointed recently to learn that you stopped going by "The Lethal Zen Ned" if I recall correctly. Any chance of reinstating this brilliant moniker?

Bimble... (Bimble...), Monday, 7 February 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

Thy Lethal Zen Ned, actually -- and no, it had its day.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 February 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

Sumner went from really young looking to really old. What happened to his thirties and forties?

Reminds me of Robert Fripp. He re-retired in '84 looking young and fit, and came back in '91 looking like my granddad's granddad.

He never retired, but Peter Gabriel kinda did the same thing....he looked young for a long time...then whammo - Old Hobbit!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 7 February 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

Y'know, given the amount of booze that Hook & Sumner have imbibed over the years, they ought to look a LOT worse. Give them credit for not going completely to seed.

Oh, and Alex, I read your "Peter Hook's Bass" thread, and you're absolutely right - it's one of the coolest sounds ever. My favourite moment is the extended dub version of "Bizarre Love Triangle", where they solo Hook against the drum beats. Absolutely heavenly. Just saying, is all.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Monday, 14 February 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

Yes I recall reading about them being pot fiends on more than one occaision (not that I think there's anything wrong with that). I'm sure they've done other things as well.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Monday, 14 February 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

I don't think they're pot fiends. Numerous articles describe Barney wearing lab coats in the studio on acid, lots of E during Technique and there's a fun story about Bernard and Johnny Marr meeting over lines in a bathroom in Berkeley and deciding to form Electronic.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 14 February 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

Oh god. Barney in a lab coat. That would just be the most classic funniest thing ever.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Monday, 14 February 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

I figured there were other substances involved, but they've always struck me as lager louts at heart.

Barney has said on more than one occasion that he can't stand pot. He prefers coke 'n' X 'n' pills.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Barney and Hooky really need to lose the "working class oik" look. They're far too easily mistaken for dockworkers.

You can't have spent all that time in leather trousers (Hooky) or do that spazzy leg jerk thing (Barney) and be cool. You can be utterly brilliant, but not cool.

Steve Morris, on the other hand, is the opposite. He's so cool most people just haven't got round to noticing yet.

Anyway, I think they're doing fine. The chap from Marion looks like he's just wandered out of a secure unit and into shot, but you can't have everything.

That's on the Japanese laserdisc version of the same. They basically just play "Regret" on the beach surrounded by sunbathers. Pretty funny, but not really odd.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure I heard some story about how Barney kept pissing himself laughing while he was trying to do the Sunkist thing, but they were shipping money at that point and were on something like a hundred grand for it, so Hooky wrote £100,000 on a big bit of card and stood in front of him holding it until he did it properly.

Although it was recorded, I don't think it was ever used. I seem to remember an interview where they said Rob Gretton went mad and wouldn't let them go through with it.

coco, Wednesday, 16 February 2005 10:35 (twenty years ago)

1)Steven Morris = Charlie Watts

2)Edwyn Collins is apparently going to be working with the television personalities, hurrah!

3)My favourite Barney story, someone in a pub or club gifts him with a bag of blow and lends him a £50 note to snort it with. Barney enjoys the blow and then returns the money... a £10 note... Allegedly
