Hypothetical Scenario: You have $20+ million dollars to blow producing two albums....

Here's my dream scenario:
I have two state of the art recording studios built on a secret island, far, far, far away from the rest of civilization.
Two years worth of food, running water and electricity have been paid for in advance.
I bring two musical acts to the island: The La's and My Bloody Valentine, and offer each the following deal...

"I want an album from each of your bands. I'm paying for all the marketing, advertising, distribution and studio time. You will have complete and utter control over the final product with the following exceptions:
  • The completed album have enough content to fill both sides of a vinyl record.

  • Thats it. Thats the only requirement.
In exchange for the completed album, you will get the following:
  • 95% of the profit from any sold units. In perpetuity.

  • Two accounts have been set up, each with $10 million dollars in them, gathering interest.

  • All the instruments you might need are either on the island already or are available upon request. Food, water and electricity are already provided. Whatever drugs you need can be provided, in reasonable amounts, upon request.
And all I ask is for an album from each of your groups.
Oh...I almost forgot...one more thing. You can't leave the island until I get an album from each of you. Chop-chop, gentlemen, you have 24 months in which to create your masterwork. Let's get to it."

Now...this thread is your chance to play Omnipotent Record Producer.
So... What two musicial acts would you offer your theoretically limitless patronage to if money was no object?

Hmmmmmm......sometimes it's the limitations (as opposed to excessive financial resources) that make for a great record.

Maybe I don't know enough about the record industry, but...albums don't cost this much, do they? I mean, what would make a $10 million record better than a $5 million record, or a $1 million record?

Anyway, in this situation, whatever band it was would probably just use a fraction of the money to make the record and pocket the rest.

    i'd need 100,000,000 to make "invincible' don't i ?

Man! I'd download some Neil Young bootlegs or something from soulseek and then keep the 20M.

Well, they only get the money after they are done making the record. Up until that point, they are like monks illuminating a manuscript. If they succeed, they get the payoff; if they fail (or goof off until they run out of time) they get nothing.

no way MBV gets that record done!

I think a handgun will be a great motivational tool.

As for Michael Jackson, he might be helped by an (ahem) "Artists Retreat" to the Secret Island. But 10 mil won't even help his debt problems at all.

I'd give the La's money to MBV and tell the La's to go away.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 February 2005 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

That would be my own project, then...two albums at once.

    Ian Riese-Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Sunday, 6 February 2005 04:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I would love to record an album of different bands backing Desmond Dekker, and give it the recording it deserves, but I know that's not your scenario. I'd love to get Fugazi, Low, and others to try it and see what happens...

Pete Scholtes, Sunday, 6 February 2005 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to do a futuristic r&b album with Blood Ulmer and Alex Chilton playing guitars, and Bobby Womack singing, backed by the Hi Rhythm Section with John French sitting in on drums on a few tracks. With a big string section.

And Paddy McAloon done right, with also a string section and with John Scofield on guitar, Dave Douglas playin' trumpet, and Brad Mehldau on piano. I bet Paddy's got some good songs that he could bring.

Pete's idea regarding Dekker sounds promising. But does this mean I split the 20 mil multiple ways?

i could imagine lee mavers killing everyone else on the island after a couple of months stuck there
