the dead c are better than seven year rabbit cycle and nothing you say can convince me otherwise. and though i have never seen the dead c live, i HAVE seen 7YRC and they were pretty good. But THE DEAD C are just one of the best bands ever. i mean, c'mon dudes!

The Dead C by a country mile... but 7YRC are pretty good, very nice guys... There on tour right now, they added George Chen and Jamie from Xiu Xiu to their touring line up.

I'd recommend Trapdoor Fucking Exit as a good album with which to get into the Dead C.

OTM. I think it's still fairly available, too. Fuestron has it. Fusetron also has a tape from Dark Inside The Sun, a one man band/guitarist type o' dude who used to play in 7YRC.

i think Harsh 70's or Operation of the Sonne are the places to begin. Trapdoor, while great in context, is a little too sprawling and schizo for a beginner, don't you think?

I'm just thinking of tracks like "Power," "Mighty," and "Helen Said This." Harsh '70s should work well, too, but, of course, it's also sprawling (if not more so?).

best i've heard of dead c were bare versions of "power" "bone" and "mighty". they were electric, but free of excessive guitar saturation. i found them with soulseek but can't recall what they were issued on. i tried 'trap door fucking exit' when i was younger, it felt pretty monotonous throughout. the most interesting thing i've heard from them was a track from 'tusk', it was track 2, i think, where it sounds like a kettle or metal plates vibrating at different speeds for a few minutes. i thought it was so cool how they released one of their albums with the old digi-pack case wrapped in a newer, xerox-y cover. i gave up looking for their more recent sub pop release after i couldn't find it. was it ever released?

Tim - I guess so, but I always felt that with the four sides of Harsh 70s, there was some kind of let-up. You could digest one side at a time. Tradoor, with it's CD format, seems so unending and intimidating, even for a big fan such as myself.

ummm, what exactly do 7YRC sound like? the dead c comparison has me intrigued enough to check 'em out tonight -- are they super noisy/psych or is there more note plucking like deerhoof?

those aren't easy to find.
my favorite moments are "three years" and "constellation"
oh and the majority of Eusa Kills, when they were taking on Royal Trux for the championship of my mind.

there is a copy of harsh seventies on ebay right now.
the dead c released a single on sub-pop as part of the singles club or whatever.
operation of the sonne is good, but i wouldn't suggest it to for starters. trapdoor has a lot more 'rock' moments on it. also, eusa kills is great and 'accessible' but has some definite filler moments on it.

the second half of The White House (i.e. 'bitcher' and 'outside') are really good tracks for introducing the dead c to people who might otherwise be wary. enough structure at the beginning devolving into noise jams.

i've seen the dead c live twice. it was even more excruciating than their records. he has a nice set of crescent wrenches though. i wanted to yell out for 'you forget love'.

saw 7YRC tonight(in utah), they were awesome. the drummer plays neat and fluid percussion, harmoninzing pitches with the guitars at points, and getting a variety of vibrations from his kit. the song structures were open and spacious but kinda rigidly-determined. very dynamic band.

they didn't sound like dead c at all. only the two mp3's "cariboo" and "yep" made me make the comparison. you can find them with google if ya want. 7YRC were very nice guys. the fisk guy from deerhoof? was very jovial, he joked about the qualities of the free procupine records that they were selling, and how they were sorta no-frills. the record and cd packaging all had good graphics

I saw the dead c about six months ago! haha, I still think my favourite dead c stuff is the really early stuff - "bad politics" is one of my favourite tracks ever, & I'll still probably take "sun stabbed" & "the wheel" &c over pretty much anything else (tho, y'know, big ups "sky" & "driver ufo" etc - xanadu did a great cover of the former)

i kinda find it hard to compare someone to the dead c (as a whole). what are they, in their fourth (or 5th) iteration? They've progressed through lo-fi to harsh guitar noise, free-noise to electronics, with all sorts of sonic deviations along the way.

I think of them as a cross between amm and pere ubu - the latter in terms of background/boredom music, art-is-the-only-thing-left-here content; also ubu have undergone mutations in their sound but I haven't heard as much. and the former in terms of improvisation but with that anyone-in-this-room-can-do-it feeling. 'chops' aren't required but its more about choosing yr moment.

its a tough comparison...though 7YRC blew my mind live (a few yrs ago) as they played in the rotting basement of a "club" closing down that night with crowds swarming all around. and they wer just dangerous..drumsticks were flying everywhere. the bass player almost killed a few people and the sound was just riotus and insane, but entirely gorgeous. they gave me a cdr that night, which i loved for a bit...and then lost to the piles. must find it

Sounds like the versions of 'Power' and 'Mighty' of the fan-fucking-tastic Forced Exposure 7", a record that I had a huge knob on for since goddamn forever. 'Peace' was also on there too IIRC. 'Bone' was on a Siltbreeze 7" from the same era, but I haven't heard that one. Also, Julio does a good job of nailing their approach methinks.
