thuja kill in this department. what do you call this department?

russignon, Saturday, 5 February 2005 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Thuja's the winner here. I haven't heard much Califone though, so I could be wrong.

I call this department "freefolk" even though it sounds fucking cheezy; it's better than "NEW WEIRD AMERICA" or "AVANT FOLK UNDERGROUND."

Ian John50n (orion), Saturday, 5 February 2005 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, agreed. the jomf i've heard can get really boring really fast, califone's alright but i like em for other reasons.

fauxhemian (fauxhemian), Saturday, 5 February 2005 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

ill give it over to thuja...but jomf can pull out brilliant stuff too, depending on whos playing.

fursaxa are incredible as well...

as for names on the door? hell, i like the idea of new wierd, but the america bit seems unfair. freefolk is probably best. ive been referring to certain individuals in the circut as beardo's..but i've noticed other people pull that same gag, so i had to quit...we, most likely, harm ourselves trying to find an umbrella...

I'll echo the Thuja praise.
What about Kemialliset Ystavat?
I really want to hear Xenis Emputae Travelling Band.
Davenport kick much ass, as well.
Avarus, too.
I love this stuff.

Do you mean free shit like they give it away? Cuz if not, even though I've only heard Ghost Plants, I can't see how they measure up to Califone, let alone JOMF, who blow both out of the woods. Maybe I need to hear something different, though.

baba o'kiley, Monday, 7 February 2005 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

What's Califone's 'free shit' then? I have Roomsound and Quicksand and love them though I do, I'd hesitate before tossing them in the same bubbling pot as Jackie-O. What records should I track down?

NickB (NickB), Monday, 7 February 2005 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Sean, I fucking love the Davenport I've heard! Again, what records are the urgent and key ones to grab?

I don't really know where the hell this thread is headed but also - Volcano The Bear people!

NickB (NickB), Monday, 7 February 2005 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Avarus "Jättiläisrotta" is great

eman (eman), Monday, 7 February 2005 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure what Davenport is "key and urgent."
I've got "Free Country" and it's awesome, but now unavailable.
http://www.demiurgic.net/23productions/ Check the 23 productions
site for more, I suppose. Some of the new cassette releases look pretty awesome.
My work pal here at the library is deep into Volcano the Bear, but the One Ensemble of Daniel Padden has made more impact on my sound world.
NickB, if you'd like to trade something for that Davenport "Free Country" release, I'm definitely interested. click the email if so.

Would the Califone free shit be the Deceleration project? Or the longer stuff on Heron King Blues maybe? Either way I take that or their less free shit over Thuja. Not to be totally negative, I'll add Surface of Eceon to things. I'll take them over Thuja too.

baba o'kiley, Monday, 7 February 2005 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Haven't heard the Daniel Padden, though I've heard damn good things about it. Sean - thanks for the offer. Check yr mail shortly (-ish).

Vibracathedral Orchestra deserve a mention, I think.
I really like "Dabbling with Gravity and who you are" as well as "Versatile Arab Chord Chart."

Trip Maker (Sean Witzman), Monday, 7 February 2005 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i meant the deceleration (califone) stuff, where i've only heard #2. i remember it being very lively for this type (AMM-ish?) of improv music.
